News: Waverley development acceleration

By

The next phase of housebuilding at the massive Waverley development in Rotherham is set to be given a boost after the £100m scheme was shortlisted to receive a slice of the government's Local Infrastructure Fund, which has a total budget of £474m.

On the site of the former Orgreave colliery, Harworth Estates is progressing the biggest brownfield site development in South Yorkshire, covering 741 acres, an area bigger than Sheffield city centre.

Over a development phase of 20 years, the site will see the establishment of a new community of around 4,000 homes, shops, restaurants, schools, leisure facilities, health and community centres and parks.

Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Homes and Harron Homes began work on the first 250 homes in Spring last year with the show home launch following in September. The first residents of Waverley took occupation in December 2012, and as at May 2013, over 40 families have moved in.

Harworth Estates is close to selling the next residential development land, which will increase the amount of activity on site even further. Duncan Armstrong-Payne, Waverley development manager at Harworth Estates, said: "We're delighted with the success of the last twelve months. It's hard to imagine that this was all open land only a year ago, as the first phase of the new homes and surroundings already feels established and homely."

A planning application has recently been submitted for the detailed layout for Highfield Lane, the access road that will enable the next phase of housing development at Waverley.

The government funding programme for planned, large-scale sites, administered by the Homes and Communities Agency, is being targeted at schemes of over 1,500 homes that could deliver real benefits to their communities, but are struggling to move forward.

Housing Minister Mark Prisk said: "This government is determined to get Britain building again. That's why we are working with local housing schemes that have their plans in place, but need help to move forward.

"Our support through the Local Infrastructure Fund will help deliver the homes this country needs, create thousands of jobs and inject millions of pounds of investment into local economies."

Andy Rose, chief executive of the Homes and Communities Agency, added: "This investment from the Local Infrastructure Fund is about building momentum behind some of those larger locally-backed housing developments to accelerate the supply of new homes. There is work to be done to ensure these bids deliver value for money for the taxpayer and fit with local priorities, but I am looking forward to getting out on site and seeing progress on successful bids in the months ahead."

Harworth will now enter into due diligence to determine the final investment, the numbers of homes supported through the funding and terms of any investment made.
