News: Apprenticeship levy to be debated at Magna business event

By

The implications of the new apprenticeship levy will be debated during Magna's South Yorkshire in Business event later this month.

Andrew Hartley, business development director at The Sheffield College, will take to the stage to discuss how the levy, which comes into place early next year, links in with the skills development priorities for the region.

Other confirmed speakers include Steve Smith, criminal lawyer at Wilford Smith Solicitors; Steve Mehdi, creator of the landmark Yorkshire Man of Steel; and a representative from the Peel Group, which owns Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Set in the former Templeborough steelworks, Magna is a family attraction with more than 100 hands-on exhibits. Millions of pounds have been invested in conference facilities at the centre which is operated by a charity, the Magna Trust, and has hosted corporate events for brands including Mercedes, Royal Mail, Kia Motors and HSBC. A £46m Millennium project, Magna celebrates its 15th birthday this year.

South Yorkshire in Business takes place on Thursday 29th September and is designed to help businesses build relationships across the region. It is supported by the three chambers of commerce covering Barnsley and Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster.

The event, sponsored by the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Swift Print and Work-Wise, runs from 8am - 3pm and features up to 100 exhibitors.

There will also be networking opportunities available throughout the day, and a Chamber members-only networking breakfast takes place at 7am.

South Yorkshire in Business will be held in the venue's Big Hall and follows on from the success of the Inspiring Yorkshire Business event held earlier this year.

John Silker, chief executive at Magna, said: "We're delighted to have secured four brilliant speakers, who will focus on a range of current topics that we're sure will be of great interest to businesses.

"South Yorkshire in Business will provide businesses from across the region with a great opportunity to come together, build contacts and develop relationships with each other."
