News: Developers to hear about Rotherham housing plans and priorities

By

Rotherham Council is inviting housing developers to come and hear about plans and priorities for future developments in the borough - and find out about development opportunities.

Developers, agents, service providers and landowners are invited to the first Rotherham Housing Developer Summit on Friday October 21 at Rotherham United's New York Stadium.

As well as finding out about Council plans and priorities for the future of housing and development opportunities in Rotherham, there will also be a "market place" which is an opportunity to find out more about working with the council and investing in Rotherham.

The authority has recently signed off its Housing Strategy and it was launched over the summer. It sets out how the Council is responding to the various housing challenges and what it intends to do and comes after changes to Government funding has left council's with a reduced capacity to deliver housing growth. It also responds to the Planning Bill 2015, and the focus on starter homes, the extension of the Right to Buy to housing associations, and the ending of lifetime tenancies.

It is acknowledged that the Council is having to work differently and embrace working with the private sector much more in order to find ways to deliver the objectives.

The objectives include increasing the number of homes, ensuring affordable rented/social housing is available, improving quality in the private rented sector, increasing opportunities for affordable home ownership, and ensuring that there is a wide range of specialist housing.

Another focus will be encouraging further housing development opportunities to come forward in Rotherham's town centre.

The summit begins with opening remarks from Cllr Dominic Beck, Cabinet Member for Housing, before Tom Bell, Assistant Director, Housing and Neighbourhood Services, outlines the Council's vision for housing growth in Rotherham. Jane Davies, Strategic Housing and Investment Service Manager, will then brief delegates on the Council's housing priorities.

The summit continues with presentations on development opportunities in Rotherham. Nick Ward, Housing Growth Manager, will talk about small to medium development opportunities while Tom Bell will give details of large scale opportunities. Zahara Siddique, Housing Enabling Officer, will then tell delegates about the benefits of working with the Council.

The summit concludes with the market place session, which is as a chance for those in the housing field to get together in an informal atmosphere, enable dialogue and facilitate an increase in the levels of house building.

Places are said to be limited for the event which takes place between 1pm to 4.30pm. Registration can be done online here.
