News: AMP Technology Centre seven years strong

The AMP Technology Centre in Rotherham recently celebrated the seventh anniversary of the official opening, when the then-named Innovation & Technology Centre was opened by three-time Formula 1 World Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart.

Providing incubation space on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, the centre has been designed to accommodate a range of manufacturing-related activities, from fledgling engineering and technology companies, to University spin-offs and subsidiaries of established companies.

Over the seven years it has attracted companies and organisations who saw strategic value in locating in close proximity to other companies and research organisations at the AMP as a mechanism for encouraging and promoting collaboration, and also larger UK and overseas owned companies looking to work with AMP-based partners, prior to fully committing towards a presence on the park.

Over the years an array of products and technological developments have being developed here; from ground-breaking liquid cooling systems for IT data centres, and the latest high-end audio hi-fi equipment, to parts for concept cars shown by leading car manufacturers, and winter sports equipment, used by numerous nation's athletes in international competitions and the Winter Olympics.

The Centre has also welcomed a number of VIP visitors over the years, including members of the Royal Family, Government Ministers, the Governor of the Bank of England, captains of industry, and even the crew from TV's The Gadget Show.

Conferences and events have been an important part of the Centre's activities, and again the range and quality of these has been outstanding. All the major advanced manufacturing related industries have been represented at events within the Technology Centre, including; aerospace, motorsport, low carbon energy, defence, medical technologies, oil & gas and automotive.

Simon Spode, marketing manager at the AMP, said: "The AMP Technology Centre has certainly lived up to its potential in the last seven years, and continues to fulfil its original vision. We have a number of successful companies developing innovative, potentially world-beating technologies, and some companies have expanded out of the Centre into other larger units on the AMP and elsewhere, employing more staff and growing further. Of course not every company has been successful but for those that weren't, the Technology Centre provided a safe, cost-effective environment for their product/service concept to be trialled.

"We fully expect more of the same in the coming years, as some of our current star companies expand and outgrow the facilities, and other new companies come in – many developing new technologies that will innovative and disrupt the current thinking in high performance industries and continue to keep the AMP at the forefront of innovative advanced manufacturing technology."
Initially developed by Yorkshire Forward, the AMP Technology Centre is now operated by Creative Space Management on behalf of the Homes and Communities Agency.

Paul Taylor, director of Creative Space Management, said: "The AMP Technology Centre acts as a hub building for the wider park and plays an important role in providing facilities for smaller high growth companies. With occupancy now at 90% and with 50 innovative businesses being based there we are proud to have played a part in its growth."

With the centre enjoying its highest occupancy levels since it opened, the new year will see a refurbishment programme of the reception and meeting / conference facilities to ensure that the Centre remains at the leading edge of technology. The recent announcement that the Centre's hydrogen mini-grid system is to be run by a partnership led by ITM Power will see the facility at the heart of the UK's proposed hydrogen network.

News: Success for Rotherham in Yorkshire Property Industry Awards

Organisations and projects in Rotherham have been recognised at the Yorkshire Property Industry Awards 2009 with a key Rotherham Renaissance project winning the Regeneration Award.

Organised by Insider Media, the awards aim to recognise achievements right across the property sector including the investors, developers, architects, contractors and agents, along with the buildings and developments themselves. The winners were announced at an event held at the at the Royal Armouries in Leeds this week.

The All Saints Quarter in Rotherham town centre secured the Regeneration Award in a category alongside developments in Shipley and Bingley. The judges praised the developer Iliad for its commitment to quality which has been rewarded by letting over 70 per cent of apartments and getting retailers in place.

The first phase of the £37m All Saints' Quarter is now complete and consists of the restored Imperial Buildings, award-winning Old Market and, most recently, Keppel Wharf.

Last month, 15 of the 19 in Imperial Buildings were occupied and all 44 apartments in Old Market had gone.

St Paul's Developments was named as Developer of the Year, recognising the string of sales and lettings secured in a difficult market. A key development by St Paul's is Brookfields Park in Manvers were this year Pegler Yorksire signed up for a 105,000 sq ft £7m warehouse to join current occupiers, Next and Maplin, on site.

Also recognised on the night, were Rotherham Council, shortlisted in the Local Authority of the Year category, an award it won at the the event in 2008.

The Environmental Energy Technology Centre in Rotherham was highly commended in the Sustainable Building/Development of the Year for construction company Allenbuild.

Now part of the Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre, the centre offers office and workshop space for hi-tech advanced engineering, manufacturing and materials organisations.

The buildings include features such as ground source heat pumps, photovoltaic cells and grey water recapture systems. The recently installed wind turbine will provide power to the building as part of what is set to be the largest wind-to-hydrogen power system in the UK.

News: Fuel cell installation complete at AMP

UPS Systems has successfully installed the fuel cells into the Hydrogen Mini Grid System (HMGS) on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

The HMGS has been developed by energy consultancy, TNEI Services Ltd and hydrogen specialists the Pure Energy Centre and is designed to produce and store "green" hydrogen energy generated by a 225kW wind turbine to power the Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre and make it self sufficient.

Capable of producing in excess of 500MWh a year the grid will make the building the first in Europe fuelled solely by wind and "green" hydrogen power.

During testing, UPS Systems successfully demonstrated that the fuel cell is operational as the system generated over 12,000kWh of electricity during May and exported 2,000kWh to the local distribution network.

UPS Systems Managing Director Tom Sperrey said: "The creation of the Hydrogen Mini Grid System is an exciting development for fuel cell technology.

"Generating hydrogen onsite through renewable energy sources such as wind helps to make fuel cells a greener solution. Although this is not the first fuel cell installation where we have had to integrate multiple sources of energy, it raised several new technical challenges that our fuel cell technical team successfully addressed."

Dr Jason Stoyel, Technical Manager at TNEI and HMGS project manager said: "In putting together the team to deliver this ground breaking project, we wanted to work with companies that could deliver innovative solutions and systems.

"UPS Systems has not disappointed and with the installation of the fuel cell we are one step closer to on-site generation of "green" hydrogen."

News: Rotherham energy project "Yorkshire's new claim to fame"

V1 Energy magazine talk to the experts behind the UK's first hydrogen powered building in Rotherham. The Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre is to be the first building in Europe fuelled solely by wind and "green" hydrogen power. TNEI Services Ltd and the Pure Energy Centre were awarded the £2.3 million project from Yorkshire Forward to create the hydrogen mini-grid where electricity generated by an onsite 225kW wind turbine will be used to power the building and any excess stored using innovative hydrogen fuel cells. Generated using an electrolyser, the hydrogen will be compressed from 30 bar to 420 bar for storage at high pressure in state-of-the-art cylinders. This high pressure storage will allow the hydrogen to be used on site or easily sold or transported for use elsewhere. With over 200kg of high-pressure hydrogen stored in purpose built cylinders, it is also set to be the biggest single store of "green" hydrogen in the UK. Dr Jason Stoyel of TNEI also discusses the importance of the ground-breaking project as a knowledge transfer programme, designed to build expertise within the Yorkshire region, and as a catalyst for further investment from the Government. He also told the magazine: "The Hydrogen Mini-grid, based on a hydrogen fuel cell, will be the most technically advanced commercial fusion of renewable energy and state of the art hydrogen technology in Europe. "The energy generated by this installation will make the EETC one of the first truly carbon negative, fully operational commercial developments in the world and demonstrate the important role Hydrogen has to play in providing a secure, reliable and renewable energy supply for the UK."

News: Rotherham's hydrogen technology demonstrated in new exhibit at Eureka!

A new interactive exhibit at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax, West Yorkshire will tell children all about new hydrogen technology. Funded by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, the exhibit has been designed to bring to life the groundbreaking renewable energy development that is being championed at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham by energy consultancy, TNEI and the Pure Energy Centre. The project is one of the first in the UK to use "green" hydrogen energy to power a large commercial building, the AMP Technology Centre, and to create a store of hydrogen for use as a fuel for vehicles. An onsite 225kW wind turbine will generate the electricity for the mini grid and it is estimated that the turbine will produce in excess of 500MWh a year. The exhibit's "Power Wall", will demonstrate the complex process of converting raw energy into efficient hydrogen power and will explain how hydrogen is extracted from water, compressed and then stored to power vehicles and buildings. Projects Director at Eureka!, Tudor Gwynn said: "The new Power Wall will be a great way to explain the complex theory behind green hydrogen energy to young children." Sara Ragan, PR & Communications Manager at TNEI says: "We were keen to work with Eureka! to take the message about hydrogen power and the groundbreaking energy developments in Yorkshire to as wide an audience as possible. This is the real science of the future and Eureka!'s visitors are an ideal audience – they are likely to see the extensive use of hydrogen power during their lifetime." The first hydrogen is set to be produced on site within a matter of days.

News: The Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre

Yorkshire Forward's landmark buildings on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham have been renamed. The state of the art Innovation Technology Centre and the second phase, the Environmental Energy Technology Centre, will be collectively known as the Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre. The centre offers office and workshop space for hi-tech advanced engineering, manufacturing and materials organisations. There is a total of 50,000 sq ft of lettable space across two wings. It has been designed to accommodate and support a range of manufacturing-related activities, from fledgling engineering and technology companies, University spin-offs and subsidiaries of established companies. Alongside the office and workshop space there is a comprehensive range of meeting, conference, admin and business support facilities available. The centre is managed by Oxford Innovation and the buildings include features such as ground source heat pumps, photovoltaic cells and grey water recapture systems. The recently installed wind turbine will provide power to the building as part of what is set to be the largest wind-to-hydrogen power system in the UK. High-tech companies based at the centre include Rolls Royce, Bromley Performance Sports, Pulse Tidal Ltd and nCode.

News: Fueling Rotherham's Hydrogen Mini-Grid System

UPS Systems plc will supply and install a hydrogen fuel cell for the Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) in Rotherham. Yorkshire Forward commissioned the centre located on the Advanced Manufacturing Park. Designed to be an iconic zero-carbon building, it encourages the development and commercialisation of environmental energy technologies. The main feature of the centre is its "Hydrogen Mini-Grid System" (HMGS) which has been developed by Pure Energy in the Shetlands and the energy consultancy, TNEI. The HMGS is an innovative system which supplies power to the building, enabling it to be self sufficient. It uses renewable energy produced by a 225kW wind turbine, which will produce over 500MWh each year – more than enough to power the centre. UPS Systems will be providing the EETC with a 30kW power system comprising nine inverters, three 12kW fuel cells, 240Ah batteries and supervisory software to control the system. The pioneering development is set to be largest wind-to-hydrogen power system in the UK and, if successful, could pave the way for the use of hydrogen as an alternative power source to fossil fuels. Managing Director of UPS Systems Tom Sperrey commented: "This project will prove to be important in the progression of hydrogen and fuel cell technology as viable alternative sources of energy. The Environmental Energy Technology Centre demonstrates how businesses can potentially be self sufficient by using renewable energy." The progress of the revolutionary "hydrogen mini-grid" system at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham can be followed in detail after specialists, TNEI Services Ltd launched a dedicated website. http://www.hydrogen-yorkshire.co.uk/ details the system that should provide the Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) with all its power from a 225kW turbine. Even when the wind does not blow, the turbine should be able to provide the building's power needs through a hydrogen fuel cell system. The pioneering development is set to be largest wind-to-hydrogen power system in the UK. The website explains the technology, includes technical data, reports on site progress and an education zone. A countdown to hydrogen production is also included, currently 111 days away.

News: Hydrogen mini-grid project begins in Rotherham

New Energy Focus reports on details of the revolutionary "hydrogen mini-grid" system at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. The new Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) should see all its power provided by a 225kW turbine and even when the wind does not blow, the turbine should be able to provide the building's power needs through a hydrogen fuel cell system. The pioneering development is set to be largest wind-to-hydrogen power system in the UK and, if successful, could pave the way for the use of hydrogen as an alternative power source to fossil fuels. Work on the foundations for the turbine started on August 4, with Wigan firm Allenbuild preparing the site for delivery of the turbine from Danish manufacturers Vestas next month. Newcastle-based consultancy TNEI is leading the hydrogen mini-grid project on behalf of Yorkshire Forward and the building should be producing its own power from January. Dr Stoyel of TNEI told New Energy Focus: "The foundations for the turbine have been laid, so that will be going up in the next few weeks, with the 225kW turbine supplying all the electricity over and above the building's needs. The excess will be turned into hydrogen and stored for use at a later date." The AMP already has two wind turbines operational, powering the AMRC and the new centre will house LIFE-IC, a "business accelerator" focused on new energy products and services.

The South Yorkshire Green Business Club, administrated by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce is hosting an event on environmental technology at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. At the breakfast event on May 30, delegates will hear about Yorkshire Forward’s Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC), due for completion by December 2008, which will provide the ideal location for companies to develop environmental energy technologies more effectively and quickly. In addition to helping develop such technologies, the building itself will be carbon neutral, powered by Europe's largest capacity hydrogen mini-grid system and including other features such as ground source heat pumps and grey water recapture systems.

News: The future of energy production visible in Rotherham

The Rolls Royce Factory of the Future at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham is set for its official launch after the installation of two wind turbines on site, but a larger wind turbine is set to go up at the adjacent Environmental Energy Technology Centre. Due to be completed by the end of the year the 225kW turbine and 45-metre tower will provide power for a revolutionary hydrogen mini grid, power the neighbouring Innovation Technology Centre, and provide energy to be sold to the National Grid. The mini grid works by using electricity from the turbine to split water into its component molecules,hydrogen and oxygen, in a device called an electrolyser, before compressing it and storing it in composite tanks. When demand outstrips the power the turbine generates, a 30kW fuel cell will convert the hydrogen back into electricity. The hydrogen mini grid is just one part of the sophisticated energy system designed to reduce the Environmental Energy Technology Centre's carbon emissions to zero. In a recent summit on climate chamnge, Gordon Brown said: "The overall added value of the low carbon energy sector by 2050 could be as high as $3 trillion per year worldwide, employing more than 25 million people. If Britain maintains its share of this growth there could be over a million people employed in our environmental industries within the next two decades." News: Rotherham company waved ahead by government

Secretary of State for Energy, John Hutton, is set to grant planning permission for a prototype tidal stream generator to be tested in the Humber Estuary near Grimsby. Pulse Tidal based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham have developed the prototype pulse generator which is capable of generating up to 0.15MW and will be one of the first tidal power machines to supply the national grid. If it is successful, it will be used to develop larger 1MW units which could be deployed in arrays each generating up to 100MW, enough to power the equivalent of 70,000 homes. The technology works by extracting energy from underwater currents in a manner similar to wind turbines. Energy from tidal flows will power a pair of straight horizontal hydrofoils, 11 metres in length, which will move up and down like a dolphin's tail. John Hutton said: "We will be doubling the support available for those technologies under the Renewables Obligation. This kind of tidal project, if proven, will go some way to helping the UK meet its ambitious targets for clean, green energy. "I wish Pulse Tidal every success in the trials."

News: Rotherham to have the first building in the UK to be powered by wind and hydrogen

The £8.7m Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham will have a wind turbine installed by North East company, TNEI to generate hydrogen gas which will be stored and then converted into electricity. It is the first of its kind on this scale – where conventional wind energy will be used on site to generate hydrogen. The EETC opens next year as an entirely energy self-sufficient centre which will house more than 30 businesses working in the renewable energy industry.
