Leading Rotherham insolvency practice Moorhead Savage has been acquired by Sheffield's newest insolvency firm, Graywoods in a move that will offer expanded business turnaround and recovery services throughout the region and nationally.

Established in RiDO's Moorgate Crofts business centre, the award-winning firm is headed by Paul Moorhead who leads a team offering high quality, professional, impartial and ethical help and debt advice to both companies and individuals.

Graywoods was formed recently when business partners Deborah Lockwood and Adrian Graham left Begbies Traynor after five years. They had previously established Sheffield insolvency practice Hamiltons in 1999.

The acquisition by Graywoods, for an undisclosed sum, takes effect immediately, providing enhanced services to businesses across Yorkshire and beyond.

News: Rotherham businesses take a break for Macmillan

Businesses across the Rotherham borough have been hosting coffee mornings as part of the Macmillan charity's annual event.

RiDO's Moorgate Crofts business centre saw a number of tenants join together to host a coffee morning. Inspired by the team at Human Recruitment, staff from insolvency practitioners Moorhead Savage, CRG Care home, AJ training and RiDO baked and sold coffee, raising £200.

More than one in three of us will get cancer in our lifetime and it's the toughest fight most of us will ever face. Macmillan provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care.

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support's annual flagship fundraiser and started in 1990, when a local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people came along to meet and mingle - as they might ordinarily do - but donate the cost of their coffee to Macmillan in the process.

The simple ask of getting together with family, friends or colleagues for coffee and cake and is celebrating its 25th birthday this year and is hoping to raise even more that the £25m raised last year to help Macmillan provide vital services to ensure no one faces cancer alone.

Nicola Savage of Moorhead Savage (pictured), said: "We were overwhelmed by all the support we received on the day and are delighted that we managed to raise so much in such a short space of time.

News: Interest rate rise will widen north south divide says expert

Paul Moorhead of Rotherham insolvency practice, Moorhead Savage, is warning that a predicted rise in interest rates could place an intolerable burden on some of the region's businesses.


And he says that talk of the benefits of that interest rise is indicative of the widening gap between north and south.

Paul said: "Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England, predicted when he visited Rotherham in the spring that interest rates would rise but that rise now looks like it will come sooner than expected."

In March, Carney visited the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing in Rotherham and praised it for its contribution to UK manufacturing's recovery. In his last speech before the general election, the Governor of the Bank of England talked of the effect of the strong pound, especially on exporters, and the need to provide appropriate stimulus to the economy to bring inflation back up to target. He expected a gently rising path of interest rates over the next few years, adding: "But rates will still be relatively low and they will have been low for a long time."

Moorhead responds: "The original prediction was for a rise soon after Christmas but the latest inflation figures suggest that rise could come as soon as this autumn.

"The risk is that the cost of borrowing will increase and it may be that people who have maintained relatively high levels of borrowing because at the moment it is affordable, will suddenly finds that payments becomes increasingly difficult to keep up.

"At the same time as the greater cost of borrowing, wages are also rising and that will mean further pressure as overheads increase."

Although the general national prediction is for an improving economy, Paul added that there was little sign of that upturn in the Yorkshire region.

"In South Yorkshire particularly I don't see much evidence of genuine optimism," he said.

"At Moorhead Savage we are still seeing people come to us saying that times are difficult and many businesses are still getting into debt and having to go bust as a result of these continuing hard times.

"The sectors which are really growing are financial services and parts of the property market and both these sectors tend to favour the south east, with the preponderance of companies located inside the M25.

"In the north of England there are still many manufacturing based businesses and it is these businesses that are still struggling, especially as the strength of the pound is limiting their ability to export."

News: Many Yorkshire companies still struggling warns expert

Leading financial expert and insolvency practitioner Paul Moorhead is warning that as many as one in four businesses across the region could still be struggling for survival.


The latest statistics from R3, the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, says that the levels of businesses showing signs of financial problems in the UK are at a record low, with few than a quarter of companies displaying the key indicators of distress.

But Paul, the founder of Rotherham-based insolvency and business turnaround company Moorhead Savage, says those figures cannot hide the fact that many businesses are still finding trading circumstances difficult as the economy emerges from recession.

"Signs of distress can mean several indicators, including decreased profits, falling sales volumes, a declining market share, regularly using a maximum overdraft facility or at worst, making employees redundant," Paul explained.

"The latest R3 figures state that fewer than a quarter of businesses are showing a combination of those factors and that each one of those indicators is at the lowest level since they started issuing these figures.

"The statistics obviously give reason for optimism among business owners but even though the economy is apparently improving, we are still seeing companies in distress.

"Looking at it from another perspective, what it actually means is that almost a quarter of businesses are still struggling and needing help and that means that as you walk along the average high street, every fourth business you walk past is facing problems."

Paul added, however, that there were still steps companies could take to avoid a crisis, even if they were showing all the indicators of business distress.

"And by seeking expert guidance there is every good chance that you will emerge unscathed and better prepared to meet the challenges of the future."

News: Boardwalk back at real ale festival

Support from sponsors is set to ensure a sensational seaside spectacular at the Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival 2015.

Attracting over 12,000 people last year, the festival has a new summer date - June 11 - 13, and so Baa'sil, the festival's official mascot will be donning his swimming trunks and armbands to present "Baa-Watch" that will bring together more than 250 different real ales from England's coastal counties as well as showcasing some of the best brews from the four corners of Yorkshire.

Held at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, the festival will also host more than 40 live music performances, bringing together some of the region's best known and up-and-coming acts across three stages.

The Boardwalk, South Yorkshire's legendary music venue, is making a return to the festival thanks to sponsorship for the area from Parkgate-based Chantry Brewery. Inside the beer festival's interpretation of the Boardwalk will host a range of live music performances ranging from Jazz and blues to good old fashioned rock 'n' roll.

Chantry Brewery began producing quality real ale in 2012 after significant investment in the latest brewing technology installed at its Parkgate facility.

The Boardwalk stage is one of three areas inside the festival hosting live music and proceeds from the festival will be used to support four local charities: Bluebell Wood Children's Hospital, Magna Educational Trust, The Rotherham Hospice and Weston Park Cancer Hospital.

Festival organiser Steve Burns said: "For a generation in South Yorkshire, the Boardwalk was the place they experienced live music and following both the popularity of the area last year and the support we have received from Chantry Brewery, we decided to revive the venue for three days.

"Live music has always been an important aspect of the festival and we felt by reviving the venue it was a great way of paying homage to the original boardwalk, and hopefully re-creating that unique atmosphere where many bands took their first steps towards stardom.

"Inside our version of the Boardwalk, there will be a bar and a live music stage hosting the most anticipated up and coming artists from around the UK, with many performers returning to the festival this year after being successful with the visitors last year."

Paul says that companies that depend on government contracts in particular could be badly affected over the next few weeks.

"Organisations working in that area may well already be having difficulty getting those contracts agreed and getting necessary funding in place, which could have a seriously detrimental effect in the long term," he said.

"Investment decisions are not being taken and people are generally being quite cautious about business in the run up to May 7.

"That uncertainty only grows when there is a possibility of a coalition and nobody can predict what form that coalition will take."

"But if businesses are being cautious with their cash and delaying buying new equipment, for instance, then there starts that whole serious knock on effect as the problem begins to spread and even when the election is out of the way it will still take quite a while for businesses to get back on track."

Paul added, though, that fears about cash flow needed to be dealt with as quickly as possible.

"My advice is always the same – seek help now when you can see the possibility of things going badly," he stressed.

"By making sure you have the best possible opportunity to manage the process and ensuring you have taken control of the situation before it becomes a crisis, the crisis should be avoided."

News: Beer festival back on at New York Stadium

The rearranged fixture of the New York Beer Festival takes place this weekend at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, the home of Rotherham United.

Organised and run by the Rotherham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), the third running of the event was postponed when the Championship club secured another prestigious international fixture in November, but it is back "bigger and better."

The "Home," "Away" and "Championship" bars will feature 70 different real ales from Yorkshire and Derbyshire, all delivered by hand-pulls, as well as bottled beers, cider and perry, and wine from around the world. All of the winning ales from The Rotherham CAMRA Yorkshire Championship held at the Magna Real Ale Festival in 2014 will be available.

Rotherham's three breweries - Chantry, Harthill Village and Wentworth - will be represented. Indeed, Chantry used the first event in 2012 to officially launch its first beers.

Live music is also on the bill with acts performing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Steve Burns, chairman of Rotherham CAMRA and festival organiser described the festival as a "fantastic celebration of real ale, now established as a don't miss event on Rotherham's vibrant social scene."

Everyone working at the festival is an unpaid CAMRA volunteer and Rotherham Cancer Care Centre will be present throughout the festival raising money for its worthy cause.

Saira Final (pictured, left) joins the company as marketing executive after graduating from the University of Sheffield.

Saira comes to Moorhead Savage as part of the RISE project, created to increase graduate employment in small and medium sized enterprises.

RISE is a collaboration between city partners, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Hallam University, The University of Sheffield and the private sector.

News: Rotherham insolvency expert sees signs of recovery

Rotherham insolvency expert Paul Moorhead says positive signs of recovery indicate that the economy is strengthening for both companies and individuals.

The latest official statistics from the Government's Insolvency Service show that the number of businesses being declared insolvent is down by 15.1 per cent in comparison with the same period last year, while quarterly statistics also show a decrease of 6.9 per cent.

Personal bankruptcy cases have also seen a 15.9 per cent decrease on the same period last year, though the number of people seeking Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) rose by 20.3 per cent in the last quarter.

Paul, the founder of insolvency practice Moorhead Savage and the 2013 Corporate Insolvency Practitioner of the Year, said: "The overall message is that the situation for companies is getting better and that there is finally some room for optimism in the business community.

"While debt is still a serious problem for many people, many individuals are more confident about the future, as they are entering into long term repayment plans with their creditors rather than simply declaring themselves bankrupt.

"It was not so long ago that people were assuming that the only way to resolve a debt problem was to go down the bankruptcy route but by seeking proper advice and not trying to avoid the issue there is usually a way forward that will satisfy all the interested parties.

"Even now the economy is showing signs of positive growth, the advice remains the same as ever – if you're concerned about debt issues, seek advice and support as soon as possible."

News: Fall in insolvencies shows signs of recovery says Rotherham expert

Rotherham insolvency expert Paul Moorhead says a fall in the number of businesses facing failure shows the economy is finally starting to show signs of recovery.

The latest official statistics provide further evidence of an upturn in the economy as the number of insolvencies in England and Wales decreased overall last year.

The figures reveal that there has been a drop in the number of companies going into liquidation – the most common type of insolvency procedure for companies that have run out of cash.

Overall, 14,982 companies were wound up in 2013, a decrease of 7.3 per cent on 2012.

Of these, 3,624 were compulsory liquidations resulting from court orders and 11,358 were creditors' voluntary liquidations that are instigated by company directors.

Other types of company insolvencies also fell during 2013, with the total number of receiverships, administrations and company voluntary arrangements (CVAs) falling by 16 per cent to 3,859.

"The decrease in the number of insolvencies is good news for the economy," said Paul, the founder of insolvency practice Moorhead Savage in Rotherham and the 2013 Corporate Insolvency Practitioner of the Year.

"Whenever a company goes bust, it causes misery for creditors, suppliers, customers, employees and, of course, the owners of the business, so any reduction is welcome.

"However, it is worth pointing out that the big drop in the number of liquidations seems to have been mainly due to a sharp fall in the number of compulsory liquidations – where a creditor forces a company to be wound up through the courts due to unpaid bills.

"It is hard to know the reasons for this decrease but the relatively high cost to the creditor could be a factor.

"Meanwhile, the number of liquidations caused by directors deciding to close the doors decreased by only 4.5 per cent during the year and the rate of decrease seemed to be slowing by the end of 2013."

News: Don’t let debt agencies threaten your business with legal jargon

Rotherham insolvency expert Paul Moorhead is warning that people facing a financial crisis should not feel pressured by the threat of legal action.

Paul, the founder of insolvency practice Moorhead Savage and the 2013 Corporate Insolvency Practitioner of the Year, says he has seen an increase in the number of debts being chased by debt collection agencies in recent months.

But too often, he says, these agencies will use empty legal threats to add extra pressure to an already tense situation.

"They will use tactics that make it look like they have legal powers in the same way that bailiffs have legal powers but generally speaking even court appointed bailiffs only have the right to enter property and remove goods in very specific circumstances," Paul said.

"It's a very complex area and a lot of debt collection agencies will capitalize on the confusion that exists in this area by suggesting or inferring that they have certain powers that they don't have all."

One common tactic is a letter that might appear to be a legal document implying that proceedings for a County Court Judgment have already been started against a debtor, or that a court has already ordered that a sum of money should be paid.

"Dressed up to look like an official notice, it can easily seem that a creditor has already obtained a court order, which they may not have done," Paul explained.

"Using the word "Notice" is particularly common as it gives the impression of being a court document, although a "notice" is merely a notification that could be issued by anyone.

"That's why it is important to know your full rights and to have somebody who completely understands what a debt agency’s correspondence is actually saying, rather than what it appears to say.

"And even if somebody really does have a legal judgment against you, there are still things you can have done to find a sensible and affordable repayment plan.

"Creditors know that the person who shouts loudest usually gets paid, but if there is a bigger debt problem merely paying off the most aggressive creditor isn't going to solve the underlying problem."

As part of the Real Ale and Music Festival, held at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, the firm will be hosting a special networking evening and sponsoring one of the bars.

Paul Moorhead, managing director at Moorhead Savage, said: "The festival is the biggest in the north of England and it's the perfect place to relax and enjoy some informal networking with our friends after a day at work.

"We are particularly pleased this year to have strengthened our ties with the festival by becoming one of their bar sponsors."

As part of the networking event, master brewer Alex Barlow, of Sheffield company All Beer, will be selecting a choice of three fine hand pulled ales for guests and presenting a tutorial tasting session.

The Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival is now in its 22nd year and runs at Magna from March 5 to 8, serving more than 200 real ales and also supporting Rotherham Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, Weston Park Hospital and MAGNA Trust.

Last year's festival raised £40,000 for local good causes and organisers are still looking for volunteers and sponsors.

Rotherham insolvency expert, Paul Moorhead, always finds that the festive season is one of his busiest periods.

Paul, who founded the insolvency practice four years ago and is Britain's only insolvency practitioner with a PhD in Insolvency Law, was this year named the industry's Corporate Insolvency Practitioner of the Year.

"With January seeing the end of the tax year many people are still working on their tax returns and fearing that they won’t be able to pay their tax bill – and that's when they might need our help," he explained.

"Businesses that have a seasonal downturn through the winter are far more at risk of getting into difficulties at this time of year too so we usually see an increase in enquiries from people who perhaps have cash flow problems through the Christmas slow down, that time when they are paying wages for what can be quite a long break but not bringing in much cash.

"It doesn't help that some companies also use the holiday as an excuse not to pay people on time, which can have an added impact on an organisation already struggling with a cash flow problem.

"But don't let a Christmas cash flow crisis become a New Year disaster - the quicker you seek a solution to the problem the more likely there is to be a successful outcome."

News: New York Beer Festival returns

Rotherham insolvency expert Paul Moorhead doesn't advocate turning to drink to stave off a financial crisis but he is delighted to be a main sponsor of this year's Rotherham CAMRA New York Beer Festival.

The celebration of more than 60 real ales, many of them from Rotherham's three breweries - Chantry, Harthill Village and Wentworth – is held at Rotherham United's New York Stadium from November 14 to 16.

And Paul, the award winning managing director of Moorgate Crofts-based insolvency practice Moorhead Savage, is sponsoring the festival's programme.

Last year's festival, which also features an extensive selection of ciders and wine as well as food and live entertainment, attracted more than 3,000 visitors and saw the official launch of Chantry Brewery (pictured).

News: Industry award for Rotherham insolvency practitioner

Rotherham insolvency practitioner Paul Moorhead has been named the industry's Corporate Insolvency Practitioner of the Year.

Paul, who founded Rotherham insolvency practice Moorhead Savage four years ago and is Britain's only insolvency practitioner with a PhD in Insolvency Law, was given the accolade in the Small Firms category of the prestigious 2013 Insolvency and Rescue Awards.

Insolvency practitioners, lawyers, bankers and debt managers were among the 700 guests at the ceremony, which was held at the Lancaster Hotel in the heart of London's West End.

"This award reflects my breadth of expertise in dealing with a wide range of financial problems affecting businesses in a still tough commercial environment," said Paul (pictured, second left), who was also a finalist in the Personal Insolvency Practitioner of the Year category.

"I was absolutely delighted to have been named as a finalist in these awards and to actually win one of the top prizes against such tough competition across the country is extraordinary and makes the past four years all worthwhile.

"I would like to thank my team for their support over the past four years and I am very grateful to receive this recognition for the hard work that we have all put in."

The Insolvency and Rescue Awards, now in their sixth year, are widely regarded by the industry as the most prestigious awards scheme in the insolvency and rescue sectors and attract entries from across the profession.
