News: Krafty Kidz get support in early years

By

Krafty Kidz has launched in Rotherham, with support from Launchpad, helping young people build confidence, creativity and friendships through hands-on activities.

After spotting a lack of opportunities for children to socialise away from screens, Karen Powell and Jessica Broadbent established the enterprise in Thurcroft in February 2026 offering a range of creative workshops, after-school clubs and family activities. The business encourages children to develop new skills, make friends and explore their creativity in a welcoming environment.

As parents of ten-year-old daughters, Karen and Jess became increasingly aware of how much time young people spend alone at home and rely on technology for entertainment.

Krafty Kidz offers a wide range of creative activities, including slime making, pottery painting, wooden crafts and other engaging projects.

The business runs dedicated sessions for home-educated children, after-school clubs and weekend workshops, helping young people develop friendships and confidence through creative play. It has also become a popular venue for children’s parties, offering a range of craft-based party activities.

Recognising that creativity isn’t just for children, Krafty Kidz also offers adults-only craft evenings.

Karen and Jessica run Krafty Kidz alongside their full-time careers. Karen owns a beauty salon and balloon business, while Jessica supports children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Together, they combined their professional experience and passion for supporting children to create a business centred on creativity, learning and social interaction.

Karen Powell, co-founder of Krafty Kidz, said: "We wanted to bring groups of children together to socialise and learn new skills. It is a great way for them to get out of the house, interact and make new friends."

As they prepared to launch Krafty Kidz, Karen searched online for support and discovered Rotherham Council’s fully funded Launchpad start-up programme. She joined Launchpad in January 2026 and began working with one of the dedicated business advisors.

Through Launchpad, they received business advice on costs, pricing and customer targeting. They also accessed financial assistance to support their marketing activity, helping them to distribute leaflets and advertise in local publications to raise awareness within the local community.

Karen added: “The support has been amazing. The advisors are so knowledgeable and really guided us along the right path.

“Their support has been immense. I would recommend anyone to get in touch. There are so many ways they can help with starting a new business."

News: Support adds to recipe for success for Rotherham-based Sri Lankan food business

By

A family-run food business bringing authentic Sri Lankan flavours to communities across South Yorkshire and beyond is expanding its offering thanks to support from a UKSE Kickstart Grant, delivered through RiDO.

Based in Rotherham, Curry Leafs was established by a local entrepreneur with a passion for traditional Sri Lankan cooking and baking. Originally launched as a small home-based venture alongside part-time work, the business has grown steadily through word-of-mouth recommendations, community support and increasing demand for authentic homemade Sri Lankan food.

Drawing on recipes and cooking techniques passed down through her family, particularly from her mother and grandmother, Hasitha established Curry Leafs to provide authentic homemade Sri Lankan food to people longing for the flavours and memories of home.

Since formally launching, Curry Leafs has expanded from a simple pick-and-mix meal offering into a broader food business serving customers across Rotherham, Sheffield, Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham, London and Manchester.

To support the business, Hasitha applied for the UKSE Kickstart grant, delivered in partnership with Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO) – UKSE provides finance of up to £1.5m to growing companies, as well as providing support for start-ups – which enabled Curry Leafs to purchase essential catering equipment and a professional gazebo, significantly improving its presence at outdoor events and enhancing its ability to cater for larger functions. The investment has strengthened the business’s presentation, operational capacity and overall customer experience.

Looking ahead, Curry Leafs plans to continue expanding its catering and events offering, with long-term ambitions to launch a food truck and eventually open a Sri Lankan-inspired restaurant serving both traditional and fusion dishes. The business also hopes to create flexible employment opportunities for women, particularly those balancing family commitments, helping them build financial independence and stability.

Hasitha Priyadarshani, founder of Curry Leafs, said: “Curry Leafs started from a passion for cooking and sharing authentic Sri Lankan food with others.

“I would like to acknowledge the support of my husband and brother, who, without their support throughout this journey, Curry Leafs would not be where it is today.

“The support from UKSE has allowed us to invest in equipment that will help us grow, improve our presence at events and take on larger opportunities.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received throughout our journey.”

Pete Newton, Regional Executive at UKSE said: “Curry Leafs is a fantastic example of how a small business can grow through passion, determination and a commitment to quality.

“We are delighted that the Kickstart Grant has helped support the next stage of the business’s development. We wish Hasitha every success as the business continues to expand.”

Darren McDool, New Business Developer at RiDO. Said: “Their passion for the business is clear to all to see and it’s been a pleasure working with them on UKSE Kickstart application.

“We look forward to supporting them further as they take the next steps in growing from a promising start.”

UKSE provides loans and equity finance of up to £1.5m to existing growing businesses, particularly those creating jobs.

News: Rotherham physio turns ambition into reality

By

After years of helping patients restore strength and mobility in both the NHS and private practice, physiotherapist Shannon Wilkinson embarked on an exciting new chapter by opening her own clinic in Rotherham.

With guidance and support from RIDO’s Launchpad programme Wilkinson Physiotherapy in Todwick helps people achieve their rehabilitation goals through personalised care and expert treatment.

Whether recovering from an injury, managing ongoing pain, or aiming to improve performance, the clinic offers a wide range of physiotherapy services designed to help clients move better and feel their best.

When Shannon opened Wilkinson Physiotherapy in September, she wasn’t just starting a business, she was fulfilling a long-held ambition. She said: "“I always knew setting up my own practice was the end game. Working for others never gave me the fulfilment I wanted. Now I can structure things my way, spend more time with people, and really listen to their concerns.”

Services include physiotherapy for aches, pains and musculoskeletal conditions, sports injury management, and tailored one-to-one rehabilitation. Shannon also provides pain management plans and pre- and post-operative support for a safe return to full function.

Having launched in September, Shannon’s client base is diverse, from teenagers to people in their 80s.

Available to all new, early stage and small businesses in the Rotherham area, completely free of charge, Launchpad offers one-to-one coaching and a comprehensive range of expert workshops to help give your business the best start and support to grow. It is delivered by RiDO, the regeneration arm of Rotherham Council.

Shannon has attended many of Launchpad’s expert workshops on artificial intelligence (AI) and marketing, gaining practical insights to help develop her social media marketing skills and grow her clinic. Her advice to others: "“Sign up straight away and immerse yourself in as many of their courses as you can. You don’t know everything about business, and even if you take one thing away from a session, it’s something new you have discovered. I’ve always learned something useful from each workshop."

News: Council sets aside £700k to support businesses on Rotherham's high streets

By

High street businesses across Rotherham are in line for much-needed support with local and regional business support agencies setting aside resources to target "High Street Heroes."

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has recently launched High Street Heroes, a fully funded programme designed especially for South Yorkshire's independent retailers and high street businesses.

Delivered by Novus Marketing Solutions, the programme is designed to help real businesses build confidence, attract customers, and feel more in control of their online presence. Supporting shop owners, market traders, cafés, restaurants, hospitality venues, and service providers that have a physical presence, it includes practical workshops, 1-to-1 consultations, events and resources.

A spokesperson for the scheme said: "Running a high street business today comes with constant pressure. From managing stock and serving customers to dealing with rising costs and trying to keep up online, it can often feel like there is never enough time to step back and focus on growth.

"High Street Heroes has been created to give independent high street businesses access to support that is clear, friendly, and designed to fit around real working days. Everything is explained in plain English, with a focus on ideas that can be used straight away rather than theory or jargon.

"High streets are at the heart of local communities. When independent businesses feel supported and confident, it benefits not just the shops themselves but the towns and people around them.

"High Street Heroes is about backing those businesses with the right kind of support at the right time, helping South Yorkshire’s high streets move forward together."

Rotherham Council is looking to further support high streets in the town centre, Swinton, Wath, Maltby and Dinnington.

Rothbiz reported last year that the authority's Shop Unit Business Grant Project was oversubscribed but it looks like further funding has been found.

With an initial £270,000 from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), a decision was made in December 2025 to allocate a further £117,643 to the project from the same pot to meet demand.

And following the capital investment, a £304,000 figure is included in the council's budget for 2025/26 to introduce three new Business Support Officers to engage with businesses in the town centre areas, helping them to flourish.

A council report states: "The purpose of the proposed £304,000 investment is to introduce 3 new Business Support Officers to engage with businesses in these areas to ensure that resources are focused on tackling the issues that matter most and so that successes can be effectively communicated.

"As well as providing a visible presence, and becoming known, in the various locations they will provide initial business advice, help to co-ordinate local promotions, signpost to other services (e.g. grant opportunities) and co-ordinate with other Council departments. They will also have access to a small budget in each of the five locations to support local activities e.g. promotional campaigns or local events."

The aim is to allow for greater engagement with ward members, businesses and residents with the officers working across the five main town centre locations, but also be available to provide support to business in other high street locations across the borough.

Further investment for certain high streets is also on its way through the Pride in Place long term funding allocated by the government - £20m over the next ten years for building Pride in Place in the Rotherham Central area and £20m over the next ten years for building Pride in Place in Maltby East.

News: Rotherham high streets grants scheme oversubscribed

By

Demand has been "incredible" for Rotherham Council's grants scheme that aims to help breathe new life into the borough's high streets.

The council is looking at extending the scheme if money can be found.

Rothbiz reported in August on the launch of the opportunity for local businesses to benefit from a makeover thanks to a £270,000 investment from the authority.

The Shop Unit Business Grant Project is funded through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

The grant aims to help high street businesses in the town centre, Dinnington, Maltby, Swinton and Wath-Upon-Dearne enhance their premises by funding improvements that will contribute to their overall look, feel and vibrancy.

Eligible businesses have been applying for grants of up to £25,000 to improve the look and feel of their shop units. Improvements have included new shopfronts, signage, flooring, lighting and other refurbishments that will enhance the attractiveness of local high streets.

Applications closed in October, with all projects set to be completed by the end of December 2025. Grants have been awarded on a first come, first served basis until the full allocation is spent.

Providing an update to the council, Cllr. John Williams, Cabinet Member for Transport, Jobs and the Local Economy, said: "This was a £270,000 scheme to help support our small businesses, shops and our local high streets across the borough. And I'm pleased to say that the scheme has been oversubscribed actually - the level of demand has been incredible to be fair, and I think that it has shown that there is a need and a demand for this sort of intervention and support for our small business community.

"We are actively looking now to find additional funding that will be able to support as many of the applications as possible that we have received and I am hopeful that we are going to be able to progress that over the next few weeks.

"I have given the steer to the service that the majority of the money can't just go into the town centre solely, there does need to be a fair spread across all eligible areas. It was designed from the outset to support high streets across the borough."

News: Positive Steps Rotherham launches new mental health venture with support from Launchpad

By

Positive Steps Rotherham Limited, a professional mental health service supporting adults who suffer from a range of mental health challenges, officially launched earlier this year. The service aims to provide compassionate, personalised care to those in need across Rotherham and the wider South Yorkshire region.

Founded in February 2025 by business owner Nicola Cameron, the Dinnington company was soon joined by Gemma Wheeler, who brought additional expertise and experience to meet the growing needs of their expanding client base.

Nicola’s journey into the mental health sector was shaped by deeply personal experiences. Having witnessed the impact of mental health issues within her own family, her path to founding Positive Steps began long before the business itself. In her early twenties, Nicola suffered a significant decline in physical health that left her bedbound and in constant pain, an ordeal that severely impacted her mental ill health.

In her thirties, she experienced a traumatic event that led to a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). After more than a decade of silent suffering, Nicola sought professional help and underwent trauma therapy, a pivotal moment in her recovery. Her professional journey soon followed, beginning a support worker role and steadily progressing into management experience. It was here that she discovered turning her passion for providing care, into a business that makes a real difference.

On starting her business Nicola said, “Having previously worked as a Social Carer, I saw firsthand that there was a big need within our communities, having supported family members and going through mental health difficulties myself, I could see there was an opportunity to help people who found themselves in a similar position who just needed that extra bit of support.

“What truly matters to the people we support is building a genuine relationship through getting to know them as individuals and understanding what brings them happiness. It’s about working together toward what a better life looks like for them. They want to feel seen, valued, and reminded that they’re not alone and that there are services and people out there who care and are here to support them.”

“What sets us apart is our lived experience, we truly understand how life’s challenges can affect a person because we’ve been there ourselves. That empathy drives us to go above and beyond. For us, this isn’t just a job; it’s a commitment to making a difference, seeing each person as an individual and supporting them with genuine care and compassion.”

On discovering the business support available from Rotherham Launchpad Nicola said, “I first heard about Rotherham Launchpad through a local billboard, but it was a friend, who’d had received support from the team at RiDO themselves and really recommended I give it a go. As someone with managerial experience but completely new to setting up a business, I was looking for clear guidance on where to begin, what I’d need, and how to approach things like marketing and HR. The 1:1 support I received was fantastic the team is approachable, and they genuinely understood the needs of my business.

“My advice to anyone considering it? Absolutely go for it. The range of support they offer is invaluable, and they’re right there with you every step of the way.”

News: Film-maker works with RiDO on digital training project

By

Award-winning South Yorkshire documentary maker and multi media specialist Wayne Sables is working with Rotherham Investment And Development Office on a new project sharing skills to create successful high quality film and social media footage.

Wayne has been running successful courses for creatives, freelancers and small businesses wanting to add digital technology into their work for several years.

His working partnership with RiDO will specifically reach out to companies working in the Rotherham area.

“It was during lockdown that I was first asked to do some commissions based around recording on a smart phone,” Wayne says.

As a result of those lockdown sessions, he was then invited by Rotherham teacher, performer, composer and writer Malcolm J Hogan to develop a ten-week educational programme.

And it was when RiDO saw those sessions that they invited Wayne to create more training modules in a partnership that launched last year and will now run into 2026.

“Those original lockdown sessions proved enormously successful and have really led to the work I am now doing with companies linked with RiDO,” Wayne said.

“It’s all about working with start ups and companies in areas like digital exposure and developing a stronger online presence.

“That’s includes learning how to take great video footage on a smart phone which really is the most that most people will need to get their digital story started.

“The important message is that you really don’t need to be a photographer or a film maker to start creating hugely effective content - we all have the technology quite literally to hand in our phones but most smart phone users simply don’t know how effective that technology can be.

“In year two of this partnership, I’ll be working with clients one-to-one around digital development for business and, of course, using the technology you already have.

“It’s a great way telling successful business stories - and the more I work in this field, the more I recognise how so many of those stories go untold simply because people don’t realise they have the tools for sharing.”

RiDO provides a comprehensive range of services to help new and existing businesses achieve their potential.

It aims to drive economic development, helping businesses start, grow and invest in the future.

It also helps to push forward major developments and provide assistance to companies looking at Rotherham as an opportunity to locate, invest and grow.

News: New Rotherham business hub opens at Manvers

By

Micro and start-up businesses will benefit from high-quality serviced spaces following the official opening of Century 2 Business Park at Manvers.

Rotherham Council has invested £5.4m in its 5th business hub, creating 20 new workshops, 16 offices and two laboratories. The neighbouring Century Business Park has supported over 400 businesses since it was set up 22 years ago.

Century 2 will feature a central reception and lettable conference facilities for large meetings and functions. Externally, the site will include car parking, cycle storage and electric car charging points.

A fabric first approach has been taken towards creating a more sustainable building and renewable heating will be incorporated within the office spaces via air source heat pumps.

Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott said: “Our investment will create more better paid jobs and increase spending in the local economy as a result.”

“We’re building on the existing success story at Manvers by creating a new vibrant workspace where more entrepreneurs and small businesses can get the support they need to grow. These are exciting times for small businesses who can tap into the specialist expertise offered by Rotherham Council.”

The site is located just off the A6195, with links to M1 and A1. It will be managed by the Council’s Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO), which manages similar facilities across the borough.

Sarah Rimmington, a Director at independent travel agency SANS Travel and her three colleagues moved from working at their homes to the Century 2 business hub last month.

Sarah enthused: “Business is absolutely booming. This place is cost effective and provides us with an excellent working environment. We’ve never looked back since moving in – it’s perfect.

“It’s a new building with great facilities, easy to get to and has secure parking. The facilities are fantastic too. There’s a Board Room if we need it, and a shower room if we want to bike or run to work.

“We’re living our dream right now. We’re happy what we’re doing, offering fantastic customer service and bringing customer’s dream holidays to life. We’ve expanded quicker than we thought possible and are just happy to be doing what we do best within our local community.”

Esh Construction was appointed to deliver the scheme as design and build contractor on behalf of Rotherham Council.

Esh’s Operations Manager, Andrew Schofield, said: “This development will provide an important facility for local businesses to operate and grow from therefore we are pleased to celebrate the official opening.

“Throughout our time on site we delivered a number of social value initiatives within the local community, including careers and employability workshops for young people in nearby schools and colleges, site visits for college students, and apprentice training on site. We collaborated with the Better Learners Better Workers programme and RNN Group’s Dearne Valley College to deliver tailored, meaningful engagement within the area.”

The new centre is located near to the original Century Business Centre that opened in 2000 and was originally developed to help local people in the Manvers area of the Dearne Valley to set up their own businesses following the decline of traditional industries.

News: A further £893,000 for Rotherham Children's Capital of Culture

By

Rotherham Council has selected which regeneration projects and programmes are to receive funding over the next few years, including the Children’s Capital of Culture idea, extending business support schemes and addressing funding gaps in projects aiming to boost the visitor and leisure economy.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) is a Government-allocated fund which is intended to reduce inequalities between communities, as part of the Government’s wider “levelling up” agenda. Rotherham is set to recieve £6.4m for 2023/24 and 2024/25. The borough's allocation of £7.2m over three years from April 2022 is a figure much less than the borough has previously used for regeneration through European Union funding pots.

The funding will be used to deliver against Rotherham Partnership priorities and commitments and also ensure that a number of projects previously funded through the European Structural Funds can continue.

With £1.6m, startup support through the Launchpad scheme is set to continue thanks to UKSPF funds, as well as other sub regional schemes addressing productivity and reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

In Rotherham , Rotherham’s business centres are set for a £235,000 upgrade to enhance the offer, including creating co-working space at Moorgate Crofts. £200,000 has also been allocated for a small grants programme for rural businesses.

Building on Rotherham Council's social value efforts, £235,000 has been allocated to "coordinate and enhance social value activity, focused on increasing local spend through anchor organisations’ procurement activity."

One of the largest allocations is just over £1m to support the delivery of capital schemes across Rotherham as shortfalls have been identified at Gulliver's Valley, Wentworth Woodhouse and Maltby Learning Trust - projects that were part of the successful bid for £19.9m from the Government's Levelling Up Fund.

The Children’s Capital of Culture programme has been allocated two pots.

Rotherham is branding itself as the world's first Children's Capital of Culture in 2025. The move is part of a cultural strategy with an action that is described as highlighting Rotherham as "a place people want to visit, where everyone can enjoy Rotherham through the eyes, ears and actions of children and young people."

£421,502 is set to extend and expand the traineeship programme that was previously funded by the Government's Community Renewal Fund.

A further £471,664 has been allocated as investment in existing and new events and festivals across the borough linked to Children’s Capital of Culture, "building capacity in community organisations and groups and creating more resilient models for grass roots programmes."

This should complement the £280,000 allocation as additional funding to deliver a regular programme of events in the town centre to increase footfall.

To support employment in the borough, a £1,291,013 allocation will go to four projects "covering the journey from initial engagement with those hardest to reach, through to sustainable employment and career progression."

Rotherham Council's cabinet is being asked to approve the allocations before they go in front of SYMCA’s local partnership group,

News: Growing Rotherham engineering specialist boosts productivity

By

A longstanding design engineering company has ignited its ambitious growth plans after securing funds from the South Yorkshire Business Productivity grant scheme, by helping them to save a staggering half a day per employee, per week in lost working time.

Rotherham-based Philford Design Engineering, which is headquartered at Aldwarke Business Park designs, manufactures and installs the vital equipment relied upon by the quarrying, mining, recycling and energy sectors, including conveyor belts, crushers and automated metal detection equipment.

Over the past twelve months the company has seen its workforce increase by 25% and with a growing order book, Philford’s senior management team began exploring ways of improving the way in which the business operated.

A key challenge the business faced was that it was reliant upon a dedicated welding bays, which often meant moving large structures around the factory during the manufacturing process. Realising they were in a unique position to overcome the challenges the company was facing, Daniel Beckett decided to reach out to RiDO for advice.

Help came in the form of key account manager John Fox, who advised the company that it may be eligible to receive support through the South Yorkshire Business Productivity grant scheme: a match-funded ERDF grant scheme, specifically developed to help businesses overcome growth barriers.

The successful grant application enabled Philford Design Engineering to invest in new mobile welding and ventilation equipment, allowing crucial fabrication work to be undertaken without the need to move the large structures around the factory.

The funding secured proved to be transformational and as a result of the changes the company has implemented it is hoping to add another five new recruits to its workforce, as well as helping to pass on the skills and knowledge within the business to the next generation through its apprenticeship programme.

With the costs of the project match-funded through the grant, the company was also able to set aside additional funds to commission a new argon gas line, reducing the reliance on individual bottles, which needed to be replaced regularly throughout the working week. Since implementing the changes, the company has not only reduced lost working time, but the new welding equipment purchased has helped it to reduce spatter – formed when droplets of molten materials land on surfaces near to the area being welded.

Daniel Beckett, Management Accountant, Philford Design Engineering, said: “We’ve seen demand for our services increase significantly over the past 18 months, resulting in a 25% growth in our workforce. As a relatively small business, we knew that the key to creating sustainable growth wasn’t simply about recruiting new members of staff, but also overcoming the barriers that were impacting upon our capacity. This meant re-thinking the way in which we operated as a business.

"We knew that the limitations of our welding bay were holding the business back. I explained the problems we were facing to John Fox, and he recommended that we should apply to the Business Productivity Programme for help. The match-funded grant we received has helped us to purchase new portable welding equipment, which means that rather than spending time moving large steel structures around the factory, the welding equipment can be moved to where it’s needed.

"The match-funded grant also meant that funds which would have been set aside to invest in the welding equipment could also be reinvested back into the business and as a result we were able to bring forward our plans to commission a new argon gas line, which eliminated overnight the time spent changing individual gas bottles.

"The measures we have introduced have proved to be transformational for our business. Not only have they reduced the need to move the large structures we’re working on around the factory, but the new equipment has helped us to create a better quality of weld; the reduction in spatter being created also means less time grinding and cleaning too. It all adds up to quite a large time saving.

"Until the work was completed, we didn’t quite appreciate just how much time was being lost. We didn’t realise how transformative to our business the funds would prove to be, resulting not only in increased productivity, reduced lost working time, but also contributing towards the creation of five additional new jobs in the business this year.”

John Fox, Key Account Manager, RiDO, added: “SME businesses like Philford Design Engineering are the lifeblood of the local and regional economy, but in many cases the challenges they face can stifle their growth. The South Yorkshire Business Productivity Grant scheme was launched specifically to help businesses across the region unlock the barriers to growth they face.

"Philford Design Engineering recognised that simply recruiting new members of staff would not solve the problems they were facing; instead, they needed to re-think the way a key element of their production process was undertaken – something that required significant investment - and I feel confident that the Business Productivity Grant funding the company has received will help them to lay the foundations to create new skilled jobs and enjoy a period of growth and expansion.”

Philford Design Engineering was founded in 1979 by two ex-coal mining Design Engineers to provide specialist services to support the coal industry. Today, the company is one of just a small number of UK businesses that is responsible for designing, manufacturing, installing and maintaining heavy industry equipment.

News: Century II Business Centre in Rotherham nears completion

By

Building works on Rotherham Council’s £5.4m scheme, Century II Business Centre, are heading towards completion.

The new business centre based in Manvers will be Rotherham’s fifth dedicated business hub to support and grow start-up and small businesses in the borough.

Local MP for Wentworth and Dearne, John Healey MP, and Rotherham Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Sarah Allen, had the opportunity to have a look round the new centre as the project nears the final construction phase.

Century II Business Centre will offer a range of spaces for local businesses, including 20 workshops, 16 office units, and two 512 sq ft lab spaces, giving businesses flexible and modern spaces to grow.

It is due to open to its first occupants in late Spring 2023, with businesses being welcomed to attend an open day after work is completed.

John Healey MP said: “Building work is really coming on and it will be great to see local businesses moving into the centre later in April.

“It’s on the back of the success of the original Century Business Centre, which opened over 20 years ago, that this investment is being made and it’s clear to see Rotherham Council is committed to supporting start-up and small businesses across the borough.”

Esh Construction is the appointed contractor on site building the centre. Esh’s Operations Manager, Andrew Schofield, said: “It was a pleasure to be part of this visit and showcase progress made on the scheme so far. As part of the development, we made a commitment to maximising social and economic value within the local community. To date we have delivered careers and employability workshops for young people in nearby schools and colleges, arranged site visits for college students, and facilitated apprentice training on site.”

Rotherham Council’s Cllr Sarah Allen said: “This £5.4m business centre is just one of the major investments that the council is making to help create jobs and improve our borough. Spaces such as the workshops, office units and lab spaces at Century II Business Centre offer local businesses an incredible opportunity to grow in their chosen industry. It is fantastic to see spaces like these for businesses across the Rotherham borough, creating vibrant business districts with great connectivity and travel links with nearby Barnsley, Doncaster and the wider region. Developments like this highlight and solidify the Council’s pledge to expand Rotherham’s economic opportunities, and I am excited to see what fantastic businesses bloom in years to come.”

News: Riverside park plans replace proposed residential block

By

Muse, Rotherham Council's development partner on the Forge Island regeneration scheme in the town centre, is not going ahead with a future part of the scheme.

A prominent site, long ear-marked for residential use, is instead set to become a riverside park.

Plans have now been submitted to create Riverside Gardens on an area extending from the recently demolished Riverside Precinct, covering the old abattoir site behind Market Street, most recently used as a riverside car park now considered to be surplus to requirements, and passing the Old Market, Keppel Wharf and Westgate Chambers residential developments.

With the pedestrianisation of part of Market Street and Domine Lane, the aim is to form an entrance leading to Riverside Gardens and Forge Island from the town centre.

When Muse secured planning permission for the cinema, hotel and food & drink units on Forge Island it used a hybrid planning application, outlining plans for later phases - 50 riverside residential units on land known as the abattoir site and 70 residential units on the site of the former courts buildings.

The latest planning application confirms: "[The application] incorporated Riverside Car Park within a wider scheme which include Forge Island and The Statutes to the west. The scheme sought to deliver two residential blocks on Riverside Car Park Site, however Muse Developments have confirmed that this residential element will not be delivered.

"Conversations between the Council and Muse Developments have confirmed that the residential element of the Forge Island scheme will not come forward, thereby leaving the site vacant and underused. This has created a risk that the Riverside Car Park element will not be redeveloped and could potentially be an undeveloped void in between Rotherham Town Centre and Forge Island.

"It is this which has led RiDO to pursue the proposed development to ensure a key area is not overlooked in the regeneration efforts of Rotherham Town Centre."

Following a period of consultation, a new proposal has been drawn up by the council's contractors, Tetra Tech (formerly WYG), for new public realm including a landscaping scheme and the pedestrianisation of Market Street and Domine Lane. It is not considered that the site could accommodate retail development.

Aspects include a play area with a slide, climbing slope, timber logs and other natural play-based elements, soft landscaping to form a stepped profile which can be used for natural play, a plaza to accommodate outdoor seating and a new public artwork. The final design details of this artwork are being determined, however it is set to be a large sized interactive and educational sculptural piece which spells "Rotherham."

Domine Lane and Market Street will be permanently closed to vehicular traffic and pedestrianised. Another piece of artwork, in the form of a pair of corten steel arches, is proposed to be included along Domine Lane.

The application adds that the proposals will "create a unique space within the town centre which will attract users from within the Borough and encourage additional dwell time through providing a space for recreation and social activities. Additionally, the art piece is intended to be a bold statement which signifies, strengthens and promotes Rotherham’s identity, and may act as a draw within its own right."

The plans also hint at further development proposals around the reuse of former bank buildings on Corporation Street, "however the designs for this are not available at this stage."

News: Ground broken on £5.4m business incubation hub in Rotherham

By

Ground has been broken on a brand-new business incubation hub on Century Business Park in Rotherham.

Led by Rotherham Council, and with Esh Construction as the main contractor, Manvers Incubation Hub will provide high-quality, serviceable office and workshop accommodation designed to help micro or start-up businesses grow.

The facility will feature 20 workshops, 16 office units and 2 laboratories for 38 businesses.

This second phase will build on the success of the nearby Century Business Centre which was constructed in 2000 and has since helped over 300 businesses, playing a crucial part in the economic regeneration of the Manvers area.

Cllr Denise Lelliott, Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: “Providing high-quality office and workshop accommodation is important for attracting and growing businesses to Rotherham.

“The Century Business Centre site has been an undoubted success over the past couple of decades, so it is exciting to break ground as construction begins on this new business incubation hub at Century Business Park.”

Rothbiz reported in April that Esh Construction Ltd was appointed as design and build contractor after the scheme was procured by YORhub’s YORbuild2 framework and will work in partnership with The Harris Partnership and RWO Associates. The total value of contract is £3,986,937.21.

Esh’s Operations Manager, Andrew Schofield, said: “We are delighted to get work underway on this key facility for local businesses, which will in turn contribute to a boost in local employment and the economy. As a business we are committed to delivering social and economic value in the communities where we operate. Throughout this development we will engage with local schools, offer work experience opportunities and support training for apprentices on site.”

The new centre will feature a central reception and lettable conference facilities for larger meetings and functions. Externally, the site will include car parking, cycle storage and electric car charging points. The workshop zone will have its own dedicated service yard for light vehicles such as transit vans and utility vehicles.

A fabric first approach has been taken towards creating a more sustainable building and renewable heating will be incorporated within the office spaces via air source heat pumps.

The site is located just off the A6195 at Wombwell, providing excellent connectivity links to M1 and A1. It will be managed by Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO) which manages similar facilities across the borough.

There will be a focus on achieving a BIM Level 2 accreditation throughout the scheme, with Magenta Solutions Ltd leading on the BIM Execution Plan, as well as achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

News: Rotherham entrepreneurs raise the bar when it comes to pub snacks

By

Two Rotherham-based entrepreneurs are hoping to snaffle up a piece of the lucrative pub snacks market after successfully reinventing the humble pork scratching.

John Walker and David Mace launched their pub snacks business, Beerpig, back in November 2019. Despite losing their entire customer base due to the pandemic just four months into their business journey, today, Beerpig’s tasty pork scratchings, which are sold warm directly from the bar, can be found in over 250 pubs and clubs across the UK.

Insurance broker John hit on the idea of producing warm pork scratchings when he decided to conduct an experiment at home. To his surprise, John discovered that the process of heating the pork scratchings improved their flavour, and after sharing his discovery with friends, the Wickersley-based entrepreneur decided to explore building a business around selling warm pork scratchings to the pubs industry.

Central to Beerpig’s growth plans was the creation of a custom-built warming cabinet, enabling pubs to sell heated pork scratchings. At the same time, John embarked upon a quest to design and create the perfect pork crackling which would be suitable for warming, meet the necessary shelf life and comply with all food safety standards. Armed with a few samples of Beerpig Crackling and some business cards, John and David ventured out to several local pubs and secured their first orders.

With each heating unit requiring significant investment, John knew that the key to the success of the business would be securing repeat orders. He also recognised that by serving the pork scratchings in washable, porcelain dishes, it would also help to reduce single-use plastics or cardboard.

However, John and David also knew that to build and grow the business, they would need additional help and called upon Launchpad, a free business support programme aimed at helping new entrepreneurs and SMEs within South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to realise their potential.

Working with experienced business adviser Darren McDool, John and David realised it was vital to protect the Beerpig name and successfully secured a trademark to protect their unique brand. Together they developed a short term and a long-term business plan setting out the company’s ambitious growth plans over the next six months and over the next three years – the shorter term six month targets they successfully achieved within just six weeks of trading. With Darren’s help, Beerpig relocated from John’s home office to Rotherham’s Fusion Business Centre at Templeborough within their first month.

During this time, John and David also took part in a number of the free workshops provided by Launchpad, giving them the confidence to build and develop their own website from scratch, further protect their brand, as well as learning how to market their products more effectively.

Poised to enjoy a significant period of expansion and growth, disaster struck just four months into Beerpig’s business journey, when the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the pubs industry from opening. Overnight, the company lost its entire customer base and with Beerpig HQ full of pork scratchings, John and David realised they needed to diversify their business model. They quickly redeveloped their plans and began to sell stock online via their website and Amazon, immediately receiving rave reviews from pork scratching fans from across the UK.

Recognising the challenges the hospitality industry faced during lockdown, John and David worked closely with their pub customers, replacing all snacks that had reached their expiry dates completely free of charge. Since the re-opening of the hospitality industry, Beerpig has enjoyed a significant period of growth, with the number of pubs stocking their products rising from just 30 in January 2020 to over 300 today. Beerpig sells one ton Beerpig Pork Crackling to pubs and clubs across the UK every week, and the company is hoping to expand its pub operations to over 1000 outlets by the end of 2023.

John Walker, co-founder, Beerpig said: “Pork scratchings are the most popular pub snack in the UK, yet despite their popularity, the way they are sold today has hardly changed since they were first developed nearly 200 years ago. I felt selling warm pork crackling would be something that would be popular with drinkers, so after tailoring and perfecting our recipe, we quickly started receiving regular orders; however, when Covid-19 struck, we were forced to completely re-evaluate our business model. Imagine starting a new company selling to pubs and bars for them ALL to be forced to close their doors within a matter of weeks.

"We approached Launchpad for help fairly early on in our business journey and Darren and the team have been incredibly supportive. We knew that for our business to succeed it was important to get everything right from day one. The one-to-one advice we’ve received helped us to get our terms and conditions right, protect our brand, as well as refining our business plans. The workshops we’ve attended have helped us to build our customer base, increase online presence and understand what it takes to run a successful business. Launchpad has provided a constant source of support throughout our business journey, and the help we’ve received has enabled us to not only believe in our ideas but lay the foundations for significant future growth.”

Darren McDool, Launchpad adviser, added: “Beerpig is an exciting company with a bright future ahead of it. Like any true entrepreneur, John and David spotted new opportunities when faced with adversity, and despite being forced to radically transform their original plans, almost overnight, they were able to adapt their business model and tap into new ways of generating revenue for the business.

"Building a strong brand can be an important way of distinguishing your services from those of competitors. John and David knew they would be entering into an incredibly competitive sector and recognised the importance of distinguishing their products from others. Crucially, they also knew it was vital to protect their brand and spent time successfully trademarking their company name, logo, as well as developing custom built equipment to heat their products, as well as getting their terms and conditions right from the first day they started trading. Launchpad was designed to not only help new entrepreneurs to understand what it takes to build and grow a successful business, but also to help them to create solid foundations, paving the way for future growth.”

News: Productivity grant opportunity for Rotherham businesses

By

Rotherham firms are being encouraged to apply for a grant which will help improve their productivity.

The Business Productivity Project is being run by Rotherham Council’s economic development unit, RiDO, to benefit small and medium sized businesses across the borough, part funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The aim of the project is to improve firms’ productivity through the provision of capital or revenue grant, and to improve how they measure and report productivity gains.

Whilst the project is initially looking to safeguard businesses and jobs, priority will be given to those applicants that can best demonstrate how the investments will have a positive impact on productivity and the creation of potential new employment opportunities in the town.

Rotherham’s businesses are invited to apply with an investment project up to a maximum value of £15,000, to benefit from 50% grant funding up to £7,500.

Already businesses are benefiting from receiving funding. Examples of projects that have been supported are purchase of new equipment which has increased the speed of production, therefore improving the productivity of the organisation, and new CRM software which have improved processes and improved the productivity of staff.

Paul Woodcock, Strategic Director for Regeneration and Environment at Rotherham Council, said: “This is a great opportunity for businesses within Rotherham to receive support around a project that will make their services or people more productive. We’d encourage firms to get in touch to see if they are eligible, and what the steps are, soon as there is a finite budget and timescales.”

News: Contractor selected for new £4.6m Rotherham business centre

By

A contractor has been selected by Rotherham Council for a new multimillion pound business centre in the north of the borough.

Rothbiz reported last year that plans were progressing for a second phase for Century Business Centre which aims to provide purpose built facilities to support micro and startup businesses.

The plans were approved last month and grant funding has been secured via the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) - £4.6m from the Getting Building Funding/Gainshare pots.

Esh Construction Ltd, has been named as the supplier securing the contract for the works. The total value of contract is £3,986,937.21.

Previous work for Rotherham Council carried out by Esh includes the Broom Hayes housing development and the new roundabout at Greasbrough.

Phase One of Century Business Centre, opened in 2000 and owned and managed by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the regeneration arm of Rotherham Council, was originally developed to help local people in the Manvers area of the Dearne Valley to set up their own businesses following the decline of traditional industries.

Detailed plans show that the authority is set to build 27,500 sq ft of employment space on brownfield land at Dearne Lane. "Manvers Incubation Hub" is set to include 20 workshops, 16 office units and two laboratories.

The new facility is set to offer high quality office accommodation and workshop spaces to help businesses grow, whilst being managed by a singular support team.

Funding documents explain: "This phase will create around 15,000 sq ft of new floor space for office and clean manufacturing “move on” space within B1 use class. This high quality, publicly owned and operated employment space will be made available to business within the local area, as well as to the wider Borough and City Region.

"Building on the first phase of the Century Business Park this project will allow current occupants and other businesses to move to larger premises as their business grows, alongside providing additional managed space suitable for new businesses as the Council looks to assist the economic recovery caused by the Covid pandemic."

The project is set to support 75 new jobs.

Esh’s Operations Director, Paul Waller, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Rotherham Council on this key facility that will enable businesses to become more successful and sustainable, contributing to a boost in local employment and the economy.

“From receiving the initial brief, Esh has led a fast-tracked pre-construction process which included developing design proposals, arranging surveys, pricing the scheme, and submitting planning all within a 10-month period. A huge achievement from everyone involved and we look forward to getting work underway.”
