More than 2,000 people have been referred to Sheffield city region's pioneering Working Win health-led employment trial since it launched in May this year.

The aim of the trial is to assess the best type of support for those who are out of work, or struggling in their current job, due to a physical or mental health condition.

More than 50 people have found new jobs or returned to work since the trial started.

Local employers can find out how the project can help their business at a free event in Rotherham next month.

Being a randomised control trial, it means that people who take part will be randomly placed into one of two research groups. One group will receive the service and the other group will be provided with detailed information about existing services in their area. It will test out how effective a new type of holistic support is for people who could stay in work, or get a job, if they just had the right sort of support for physical or mental problems.

Businesses in Rotherham can book a free consultation and workplace health check and employees can benefit from one-to-one coaching. The Working Win project can also deliver free mental health and physical health awareness training for employers and help employees to tap into Access to Work, a Government funding scheme that can pay for specialist equipment, transport solutions or on-the-job support.

An open employer learning event is taking place on the November 15 at the AMP Technology Centre in Rotherham.

Dan Jarvis, mayor of the Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Combined Authority, said: "I'm proud that Working Win is leading the way in helping people find the right jobs, and receive the best support while they are in those jobs.

"And I would urge our businesses to take the free, individual, support that is on offer, so that we can all make South Yorkshire a place where people with physical and mental health problems are valued in the workplace.

"This is crucial not just on World Mental Health Day, but every day."

Working Win is funded by the Government's Work and Health Unit, and is being delivered in partnership with local NHS partners and South Yorkshire Housing Association.

News: New health-led employment trial in Rotherham

A new health-led employment trial which will support employers to hire the right people and keep staff fit and healthy at work has been launched by Sheffield City Region (SCR) and South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA).

Called Working Win, this randomised control trial is being funded by the Government's Work and Health Unit and delivered in partnership with Sheffield City Region and local NHS partners. It is open to participants who are aged 18 or over, are registered with a GP in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and who have a mental or physical health condition that they feel is a barrier to moving into employment or remaining in their current role.

One group will receive the service and the other group will be provided with detailed information about existing services in their area. It will test out how effective a new type of holistic support is for people who could stay in work, or get a job, if they just had the right sort of support for physical or mental problems.

Around 20% of working age adults experience a mental health condition. Fifteen million days of work a year are lost due to stress, anxiety and depression. Bad backs, shoulders and necks have similar impacts, and one-third of people with common physical health problems also experience mental health issues.

Being out of work or suffering from work-related stress can have a range of negative impacts, making it more likely that we'll report ill health and worsening recovery from conditions like heart disease."

News: Rotherham 2010 BETS scheme wins new contract

More Rotherham residents are set to benefit from better estates as 2010 Rotherham expands its popular Borough Environmental Training Scheme.


The BETS trainees have been working on projects for council tenants in the Borough for almost two years, and the scheme has now won a contract with South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) to provide an environmental works service to a development of affordable eco-homes in Canklow.

Services to be provided by the trainees will include litter picking, removing fly-tipped rubbish, clearing leaves, sweeping footpaths and general maintenance of communal shrub beds. They will also keep an eye on empty properties, inspecting for vandalism and ensuring that gardens are kept tidy.
The BETS scheme is run by 2010 Rotherham, in partnership with Rotherham Borough Council and Morthyng Ltd.

Lynn Aston, 2010 Rotherham’s Interim Director of Operations, said: "2010 is not just about housing, it is also about education and the environment. The BETS scheme provides an excellent opportunity for young people to learn invaluable skills, such as leadership and working as part of a team.

"It has been a great success over the past two years, with many Rotherham residents noticing a real difference in their area. We hope that this new contract will be the first of many for the BETS trainees, and that the scheme can go on to benefit many more residents and young people."

News: Rotherham's sustainable buildings shortlisted

The innovative eco-homes at Henley Rise, Rotherham have been shortlisted for the prestigious RICS Yorkshire Awards 2009. The project has been named in the sustainability category along with five other buildings from across Yorkshire. The project by the South Yorkshire Housing Association provides 23 timber-framed affordable homes at Masbrough. The properties are superinsulated to minimise heat loss and for most of the year, heat from lights and appliances will provide enough warmth without the need to use central heating. All the properties benefit from a complete solar roof generating 3000KW of electricity per property and providing at least two thirds of the hot water needed by the household. The Pro Yorkshire Awards attracted more entries than any of the other regional RICS property awards. Colin Harrop, Chairman of the RICS regional board said: "All the projects short listed in Yorkshire and Humberside are a credit to the region, and illustrate the important, skillful work that chartered surveyors and property professionals in the area have completed. Their inclusion in the short list puts the area on the map as a region that offers world-class, innovative buildings, I wish them all the very best of luck." Last year the buildings were awarded the Sustainable Futures Award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) at their Yorkshire White Rose Awards.

News: More Rotherham buildings up for design awards

Two Rotherham developments, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Eco Homes at Henley Rise, have been shortlisted for this year’s RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Awards. The Bond Bryan designed "Factory of the Future" at the Advanced Manufacturing Park houses the AMRC, a partnership between Boeing and the University of Sheffield. Over 100 researchers will be stationed at the facility, and will be responsible for transferring knowledge of pioneering industrial techniques in aerospace, automotive and medical sectors to manufacturing companies throughout the whole region. The building is 4,200 sq m and distinctive in its architecture. It has been designed as national exemplar of sustainable building development and includes eco heat pumps and two wind turbines. The design is shortlisted for the overall White Rose Award for Architecture and the Sustainable Futures Award, where it is joined by the Henley Rise project. The South Yorkshire Housing Association project provides 23 timber-framed affordable homes at Masbrough.
