News: Former editor lambasts National World for "ripping apart" Rotherham Advertiser

By

Historic independent weekly title, the Rotherham Advertiser, has new owners again after British multimedia company, National World plc, was acquired by a major shareholder.

The editor, who left the paper during National World's ownership, described the company as "wolves" in a post on social media.

Listed on the London Stock Exchange, National World plc became operational with the acquisition of JPIMedia (formerly Johnston Press) for £10.2m in 2021. Titles include The Scotsman and the Yorkshire Post, and locally, The Sheffield Star. In 2023 it added the Rotherham Advertiser, buying it for an undisclosed sum from Regional Media Ltd.

Last year, Media Concierge announced plans to acquire the shareholding of the plc in a deal worth £65.1m that involved the creation of a new privately owned company.

Media Concierge is an independently owned media group providing local marketing solutions at scale across the UK and Ireland.

The strategy is to focus on local news with stock exchange documents setting out that it will "continue and accelerate National World’s strategy to grow its monetisable audience. This will be achieved by concentrating on local and regional audiences, improving the user experience of the websites and ensuring that adequate news gathering and technical resources are available and properly directed to drive traffic and user loyalty.

"Whilst Media Concierge accepts the shift to online news consumption it also remains committed to preserving the printed products for the foreseeable future."

The takeover triggered a legal confrontation between Media Concierge and National World with a court approving the deal recently.

National World made claims of a "potentially systemic pattern of historical invoicing irregularities in relation to the activities of entities within the Media Concierge Group" with Media Concierge claimed to be "inappropriately withholding revenues due to National World totaling £4.4m in respect of certain contracts with entities in the Media Concierge Group which had been terminated."

Media Concierge "has continued to deny invoicing irregularities and argue that the withheld revenues are subject to a substantial counter-claim for breach of contract in excess of the £4.4m amount."

Added into the situation is the plight of local journalists. The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) says that since National World took over the former JPI Media, the strategy of executive chairman David Montgomery saw "an estimated 25% of editorial jobs cut across the business, with remaining journalists reporting that they are overworked, experiencing stress from the workload, and that they are set arbitrary targets which are impossible to meet."

Changes at The Rotherham Advertiser saw editor, Andrew Mosley leave the publication, along with a number of senior reporters and long-standng staff. Richard Fidler moved from a role at the Yorkshire Post into the role of editor at "the 'tiser."

Posting on X, Andrew Mosley, who has recently published his first novel, said that the new deal had got to be a positive for the likes of the Rotherham Advertiser, adding: "Sold down the river and to the wolves by the owner of Regional Media Ltd and ripped apart."

More bad news for the borough came when National World signed a deal with Newsquest in 2023 that resulted in production ending at DMG Media's site in Rotherham. With a reduction in work, the £60m plant at Dinnington ceased printing for good in 2024.

Following the court's approval, Malcolm Denmark, CEO, sent a message to staff. He said: "Our company, Media Concierge, has been a strong supporter of local and regional media for many years. In fact, we were the first and largest investor in National World. From the outset, we believed in the vision of building a sustainable and independent news business that serves communities across the UK. That belief has not changed.

"Now, as we move from investor to owner, our approach is straightforward. We want to support you in doing what you already do so well. You know your audiences, your titles, and your communities. The most important thing we can do right now is to give you the space and confidence to carry on — business as usual."

According to data firm, ABC, The Rotherham Advertiser, which began publishing in 1858, had an average weekly circulation of 6,543 in 2024, down from 7,594 in 2023. Previous owners, Regional Media Ltd reported a ciculation of 13,700 in its 2023 annual report to independent regulator, IPSO.

News: Wentworth Woodhouse to star in Nick Knowles: Heritage Rescue

By

DIY SOS hero Nick Knowles knows more than a thing or two about buildings in dire need of some expert TLC.

But even he must have been amazed by the scale of vital repairs at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham when he arrived to film his latest TV series, Nick Knowles: Heritage Rescue.

The Preservation Trust, which has owned the Grade I listed stately home since 2017, has embarked on a £130m project to save it for the nation.

The presenter, who has a keen interest in historic architecture, found out how the largest stately home in Britain, once home to the Marquesses of Rockingham and the Earls of Fitzwilliam, had fallen into decay after over 70 years of neglect.

At 9pm on Wednesday, December 15 viewers can watch Nick join artisans brought in to repair the Georgian mansion’s three acres of roofs, the elegant portico on its vast East Front and restore its North Pavilion complete with 18-foot weathervane.

The hour-long episode is airing on the Freeview channel Quest and is also available to stream on the subscriber channel Discovery +.

During filming at Wentworth, which took place during spring and summer, Nick learned about old masonry, joinery and roofing skills being used by craftsmen from construction contractors Robert Woodhead Ltd.

The popular new series sees Nick Knowles follow owners, custodians and armies of artisans going the extra mile to save some of Britain’s most magnificent and historic buildings dangerously close to wrack and ruin.

He uncovers some of their more surprising histories and reports on the skills and passion needed to keep Britain’s heritage alive.

Previous episodes have featured Castle Howard, Brighton Pavillion and Exeter Cathedral.

“There was great excitement at Wentworth when Nick’s production team said they would like to include us in Heritage Rescue,” Said WWPT’s CEO Sarah McLeod.

“The programme will raise our profile to viewers around the world and we were delighted to meet Nick.

“He was fascinated by the story of the house’s fortunes and decline, the restoration of crumbing 18th century plasterwork on the East Front portico and crucial repairs to make the North Pavilion at one end of the Front water-tight.

“Nick also signed some builders’ hard hats for us which we plan to auction off in aid of Trust funds next year along with other celebrity items.”

News: Borough to lose Rother FM in Bauer rebrand

By

From September, there will be no more Rother FM on the airwaves. Instead, Bauer Media is set to create the largest commercial radio network in the UK by merging a number of local radio stations that it has acquired.

The German multimedia conglomerate acquired Lincs FM, Celador Radio, UKRD and Wireless local stations in 2019, and over 50 stations will join the Hits Radio Brand Network, providing the highest listening hours of any commercial radio brand. Bauer owns the likes of Absolute Radio, Kiss, Magic and Hallam FM.

Access to DAB Digital Radio will secure the multi-platform digital future of these stations in a radio market which is seeing a significant shift towards consumption on digital platforms.

The group said that the move enables the creation of a national network which delivers the optimum mix of local content that listeners highly value alongside content from nationally known presenters, whilst also providing significant scale for advertisers.

Dee Ford CBE, group managing director - radio at Bauer Radio, said: "Audiences love and trust radio. Expanding the Hits Radio Brand Network will ensure listeners to these acquired stations benefit from multi-platform digital distribution meaning they can continue to broadcast in an increasingly competitive, digital and voice-activated world. This ensures the provision of local news and information, traffic and travel as well as access for advertisers to highly valued audiences."

Rother FM will become part of Greatest Hits Radio in September - "offering classic hits from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s alongside regional drive time and networked breakfast shows."

Trade media reports that some presenter and journalist roles will be made redundant. Bauer confirmed that some roles are being put into consultation and freelance contracts are being reviewed. Bauer added that it is fully committed to supporting all affected employees.

Graham Bryce, group managing director at the Hits Radio Network Brand, said: "We are committed to ensuring the future of radio in local markets and serving the needs of our listeners and advertisers. However, our top priority right now will be to support those affected through this period."

Ofcom awarded Lincs FM Group a 12 year licence for Rother FM following a competition in 2006. The winning bid, which beat two other bids, was to create "a truly local radio station for Rotherham with a high quality news and information service that puts Rotherham first, and a popular and distinctive blend of music - a station designed to appeal to adults and children alike."

Awarded a community radio licence in 2007, Redroad FM continues to serve the rural communities of South Rotherham, with a particular focus on young people.

News: Filming wraps on latest BBC show filmed in Rotherham

By

Filming wrapped last month of the TV adaptation of David Walliams' book, Billionaire Boy, with key locations including Wentworth Woodhouse and Oakwood High School in Rotherham.

Billionaire Boy is the fourth BBC adaptation of a Walliams novel following the successes of Gangsta Granny, Mr Stink and The Boy In The Dress. It tells the story of Len, who makes a billion from inventing a new toilet roll, and his 12-year-old son Joe, who appears to have everything he could want but what he really needs is a friend.

Screen Yorkshire invested in the production, which has an all star cast, through its Yorkshire Content Fund. Screen Yorkshire works to secure and support the very best projects, companies and individuals, helping to make Yorkshire and the Humber one of the most sought after destinations for production in the UK. As an investor it operates the £15m, ERDF-supported Yorkshire Content Fund.

Billionaire Boy filmed in South Yorkshire from October 5 - 31. Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest privately-owned house in Europe, was last seen on the BBC as a backdrop for one of the most ambitious TV dramas ever undertaken in the UK - Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. The magical drama was another investment from the Yorkshire Content Fund and was the largest scale production that Screen Yorkshire has ever invested in.

Billionaire Boy stars Elliot Sprakes in his first major TV role, as Joe. It also stars John Thomson, Catherine Tate, Rebecca Front, James Fleet, Warwick Davis, and Walliams himself (pictured with Elliot on set).

A number of local school children from Oakwood High School were cast to appear in the production as Joe's classmates.

David Naisbitt, headteacher at Oakwood High School, said: "There were a number of staff colleagues who participated and even enjoyed being extras in some key scenes. And in addition to this there was something like 150 children able to participate as extras, over and above the children that had secured key speaking roles.

"The experience was tremendous and very interesting. Watching the band wagon roll in and then seeing it in action was an amazing experience. In simple terms; it was substantial, spectacular and thoroughly exceptional for people like ourselves who rarely, if ever, see these sorts of things in action.

"I really do hope that the children got a terrific amount out of the experience and I am sure it will be something that they continue to talk about long beyond the screening; at some point over the Christmas holidays."

Jo Sargent of King Bert Productions, said: "We've had a brilliant time shooting Billionaire Boy in Yorkshire. The combination of fantastic crew and locations, brilliant performances from the local children and investment from Screen Yorkshire created the perfect package for a successful shoot. We can't wait to share the results with audiences this Christmas."

Sally Joynson, chief executive of Screen Yorkshire, added:: "We're delighted to have had the opportunity to work with King Bert to bring David Walliams' Billionaire Boy to the screen. With a fabulously entertaining script and stellar cast on board, it has all the makings of a real treat for audiences over the festive season."

News: Infinite creativity. Infinite possibilities

By

Having been given valuable support when launching her own business, a Rotherham-based digital marketing expert is now giving support back to Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE), helping it to raise its profile using social media.

Infinity Digital was named Most Innovative Business in the Rotherham Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards 2014 when judges praised Rebecca Coupe for her commitment to innovation, creative vision and determination to drive the business forward.

RYE secured part-funding through the European Regional Development Fund, to provide self-employment support and advice for young adults (up to the age of 30) in the area. Rebecca is just one of the hundreds of young people who have been inspired to explore business ideas and develop the skills and knowledge necessary to be their own boss.

The seeds of self-employment and growing a business were sown when Rebecca gained work experience at a small business with an entrepreneurial spirit whilst studying for a degree in Theology and Religious Studies. Rebecca explained: "Even as an office junior, spending most of my days making cups of tea and answering the phone, I tried to learn as much as I could about the business. I got promoted and developed an interest in marketing.

"Not only did it help me decide what career path I wanted to follow and develop my skills in business, but I built relationships with my employer and co-workers which proved to be invaluable when I decided to start my own business seven years later. In fact, my former boss is now my mentor and my ex-manager is one of my biggest clients!"

Testing the entrepreneurial waters by selling handmade jewellery online and running a catering company with a close friend, Rebecca picked up new skills in social media and search engine optimisation whilst working at a small public relations agency in Rotherham.

Added to the skills picked up at university and at work, and coupled with a desire to become an entrepreneur and run her own business, Rebecca successfully launched Infinity Digital, a digital marketing agency that brings together social media, content marketing and search engine optimisation to deliver tangible results.

Infinity Digital now works with a wide variety of businesses, from chartered surveyors and independent financial advisers to design agencies and film distributors.

One of the organisations to call on Rebecca's expertise is RYE, as it raises its profile online using social media to promote how it can help young people in the borough to develop business ideas and find suitable premises.

Jackie Frost, manager at Rotherham Youth Enterprise, said: "Rebecca's knowledge of social media has been invaluable for us. Not only for promoting what we do but also promoting some of the young businesses that we work with. Twitter is becoming a really useful tool, allowing us to join in the conversation about Rotherham, enterprise and entrepreneurship and engage with clients and potential clients in a visible way."

Rebecca concluded: "Since starting Infinity Digital, the business has gone from strength to strength. We're now working with close to 20 small and medium sized local companies to help them make the most of digital and social media to promote and grow their businesses."

Having developed an elearning course with TrainingPost.com, Rebecca plans to launch an online coaching programme that's designed specifically for young entrepreneurs later this year.

News: Rotherham college lecturer has business vision

By

An enterprising media lecturer has set her sights on having the best of both worlds with plans to grow her own business that will in turn provide opportunities for the young people she tutors at Rotherham College of Arts & Technology (RCAT).

Joada Allen-Booth has been lecturing in video and animation at Rotherham College for five years. When Darren McDool from Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE) told her about help she could get from UK Steel Enterprise and its Kickstart Fund she set about writing a business plan and now she has launched her own company called Visualisedit, specialising in all forms of video production and based at RiDO's Century Business Centre in Manvers.

Joada, who has previously worked for outdoor broadcasters and a range of production companies filming live sports events, said:" Darren comes into college regularly to talk to the students about self-employment so I asked him what I needed to do. He told me about the Kickstart Fund and I realised I could create a business that would help me achieve all my goals.

"I love helping young people create videos and games, I also love creating my own video work so my aim is to keep lecturing part-time and provide experience and work opportunities for students that have completed their studies. If, through my business, I can take young people on as freelancers I'll be getting the best of both worlds and giving the students I lecture a helping hand up on the career ladder."

Applicants to the Kickstart Fund can access a variety of business support services from Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RIDO) and RYE, including finding work space, business planning and mentoring through the early stages. UK Steel Enterprise has helped over 200 people start a business in Rotherham since 2009.

Joada's plans look to be bearing fruit already as she has won contracts with several companies making promotional videos and testimonials and she has a number of weddings booked. One of the reasons she approached UK Steel Enterprise for help was so she could upgrade her equipment to a fully professional level, which she has now done.

Joada, added: "Putting it bluntly I would not have been able to launch the business without the grant. I now have the equipment I need to make professional standard videos for clients, which is a major transformation for me. The College has been excellent in supporting me as has UK Steel and Darren. I'm really excited about what the future holds for me and my new business."

UK Steel Enterprise is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel. Its Kickstart Fund provides grants of up to £500 to start-up businesses to purchase essential equipment and or services that can get them trading. Its main investment fund provides business finance in amounts from £25,000 up to £750,000 to companies in South Yorkshire and other areas affected by changes in the steel industry.

Allan Wood, regional executive for UK Steel Enterprise said:: "Our aim at UK Steel Enterprise is to support the local economy by encouraging and supporting the creation of new jobs and businesses. Joada has created a great opportunity to be her own boss and will act as a bridge to employment for other young people. We want to talk to and support even more people like Joada so other new businesses are launched in South Yorkshire."

Jackie Frost, chief executive of RYE, added: "Joada has a very unusual business model but the planning she put into it and the way she asked us for help gave us great confidence in her. We hope to be working with her for several years as she opens the door for other young people to start up their own businesses when they finish college."

News: Funding helps Reece start from scratch

By

A new house music record label based in Rotherham has signed its first major artist after it received a boost from UK Steel Enterprise's Kickstart Fund.

Reece Johnson launched No More Noise Records in March and after signing respected house music producer Dale Howard, has enjoyed early success and recognition in a number of download charts. In April the label released a Dale Howard EP featuring two tracks, Undercover and Alpha, which reached number 46 in the Beatport chart with support from some big name DJs.

Reece, who lives in Kimberworth and works for Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in its business support department, runs the record label on a part-time basis. He received £500 from UK Steel Enterprise's Kickstart Fund to help him pay for Dale's fee, artwork for the EP and the necessary promotion.

Applicants to the Kickstart Fund can get support from Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RIDO) and Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE) to help them with business planning and mentoring through the early stages. UK Steel Enterprise has helped over 200 people start a business in Rotherham since 2009.

Reece sees the early success as the first step on the ladder to building an established record label that can help aspiring artists. He said: "Many record labels start out like ours and it can take time to get things moving but our chart success shows it is possible. The Kickstart funding was critical in getting us trading because without it we would still be waiting to approach an artist."

The record label was the next obvious step for Reece, one of the pioneers behind successful Sheffield club night, "De:Bug" with friends, Steve Roberts and Steve Lynam. The night is helping to put the city back on the clubbing map and recently celebrated its second birthday with a bang.

Reece has already set his sights on the next project when he hopes to be able to offer a helping hand to up and coming artists. "I am already talking to a number of producers about promoting their work and have at least one well known artists in mind. I also do some producing myself, so what I want to do is create a compilation EP featuring a number of artists to try and give them a break," says Reece.

Keith Williams, regional manager for UK Steel Enterprise, said: "When it comes to launching a new business it's vital to understand your market and Reece clearly does. Many record labels start out small and the underground music scene is huge, with plenty of potential for thousands of people to download his new music."

Jackie Frost, chief executive of Rotherham Youth Enterprise, added: "Reece is a great example of what can be achieved with hard work and determination. We are happy to have helped Reece in the grant application process and look forward to providing further support as his record label business develops."

UK Steel Enterprise has set aside finance from its Kickstart Fund to target young entrepreneurs in Rotherham with small scale finance that can make all the difference when starting a new business.
