News: Seminar to help Rotherham healthcare companies

By

Healthcare technology companies in South Yorkshire are being encouraged to attend an introductory seminar to find out about a new investment readiness programme in the region.

The Yorkshire Forward Access to Finance for Healthcare Technology Companies programme was launched earlier this year and is already supporting a number of companies seeking funding to grow and develop.

A free half day introductory seminar will be held at the offices of Grant Thornton on Broadfield Court, Sheffield on Wednesday 15 July starting at 8.30.

The Access to Finance programme gives healthcare technology companies the knowledge, advice, tools and resources needed to access equity funding from national and international investors.

Programme manager Phil Whaley of Grant Thornton said: "As companies come in all shapes and sizes, we aim to signpost them to the appropriate sources of funding or, if we believe there are areas that need to be addressed prior to funding, we help identify what these issues might be and how they can be overcome.

Experience shows that taking the time up-front helps increase the chances of securing funding by presenting a credible business proposition to providers of finance."

News: Rotherham teacher is top at enterprise

By

Rotherham showed it was in a class of its own after scooping the prize for enterprise teaching at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Rotherham is acknowledged nationally and internationally as a centre for excellence in enterprise teaching and learning, developed through the enterprise education initiative Rotherham Ready.

Now Rotherham teacher Jenni Logan, from Herringthorpe Infant School proved that nobody does it better – by winning the enterprise teaching award category at the northern regional finals of the National Teaching Awards.

Collecting her award in front of a packed Cutlers Hall in Sheffield, Jenni said: "I am so pleased to have won this award as a foundation teacher, because it recognises that enterprise and developing enterprise life skills is something that needs to happen from the earliest age."

Jenni has helped her school achieve two prestigious national awards for enterprise, including becoming the first Infant school ever to receive the Warwick Platinum Award for Excellence in Enterprise Education. She will now go forward to the national finals of the Teaching Awards in London in October to represent the north.

Rotherham Ready Project Officer Catherine Brentnall said: "Good teachers are inspirational and they deserve our thanks and recognition. We should feel proud in Rotherham to have such passionate and talented teachers working to equip children and young people with the skills they will need to succeed in the future."

This was the third year that a Rotherham teacher won the top prize in the enterprise category, showing that the borough is at the forefront of innovation and excellence for enterprise teaching and learning.

News: Record inward investment for South Yorkshire

By

The global economic downturn has failed to dampen Yorkshire and Humber's position as a leading location for foreign investment, with the latest figures released by Yorkshire Forward showing the region attracted a record 125 overseas investors in the last 12 months, the highest ever.

According to the figures South Yorkshire has proved the most popular location for investment, attracting 45% of the total business investments. North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire attracted around 23% each and Humber proved to be the location of choice for around 9% of investors.

The United States was the region's top investor for the second year, followed closely by Japan and firms from across Europe. And despite challenging trading conditions, the Advanced Engineering, Food and Drink and Manufacturing sectors remained the top sectors for investment in the region.

Theresa Lindsay, Assistant Director of Business at Yorkshire Forward said: "In a climate where businesses now more than ever, are balancing the need for capital investment against the uncertainties of the global economy, the results endorse the strength of our region as the place to do business"

"More than half of all inward investment during the past year has come from existing international companies that have a base in our region. These companies are choosing to reinvest in the region and expand their operations, in a highly competitive global market.

"This demonstrates the level of confidence in the Yorkshire and Humber economy and proves our region is the right choice for companies who are not only market seeking, but also efficiency seeking."

In Rotherham, investment from overseas came from relocating operations such as the Swedish owned Dormer Tools move to the AMP, German vending machines operator Selecta and the Park Inn Hotel in Manvers operated by American firm, Radisson. Further foreign investment came in the form Finnish company Outokumpo's buyout of Metalfin, Germany's HBM buying nCode Ltd and Spanish petfood group, Rodi buying Pointer Pet Foods.

This year has already seen two foreign investments announced for Rotherham with Dutch owned, Pegler Yorkshire and Swedish owned, Sandvik moving in.
