News: Kiddicare prepares Rotherham store for opening

By

Kiddicare, the UK's leading specialist online retailer of baby products, is preparing to open their flagship store in Rotherham.

Kiddicare.com, acquired by Morrisons in 2011, agreed to take over the leases of 10 former Best Buy stores from Carphone Warehouse in January. This included the 45,000 sq ft unit at Parkgate Shopping in Rotherham.

Now plans have been submitted fit out the unit with new cladding, signage and a new entrance to create "a fresh new look".

It is part of an investment of around £15m to convert 10 stores to the full Kiddicare offering and the company estimates that around 700 new jobs will be created across the country. Kiddicare has its existing flagship store in Peterborough, the largest kids store in Europe, and the first of the new stores opened in Nottingham last month.

Electronics retailer Best Buy, closed their store at Parkgate just months after it opened after it made the decision to close all 11 of their UK stores.

A spokesperson for Kiddicare, said: "Best Buy's sudden arrival to the UK market only to pull out within the same year creates a negative outlook to what is an already difficult period in today’s economy.

"Kiddicare hope to create an exciting fresh new look with a fun exterior and an optimistic view of the future, not just for that of the customers, but for the other retailers within the park and for future employees of the Kiddicare franchise."

The award-winning online retailer was acquired by Morrisons in 2011 for £70m. The acquisition was the first step in developing Morrisons online business.

The company trades separately as kiddicare.com, led by Scott and Elaine Weavers-Wright. It was founded in 1974 by Neville and Marilyn Wright and has grown into the UK's leading specialist online retailer of baby products.

Turnover in the 2010 financial year was £37.5m and has grown by 75% in the past three years using leading web technology and picking software. Over 80% of sales are through the online channel with the business now set to offer in store channels from units at key retail park destinations in the UK.

The Rotherham store is set to open "shortly."
