News: New bars to open in Rotherham town centre

By

Two new bars are set to open in Rotherham town centre next month, providing a pre-Christmas boost for the night time economy

Popular rock bar, SNAFU, is opening in new premises alongside a new bar in Westgate Chambers.

The former home of the Onyx Rooms and Milanos has undergone internal refurbishment and is to reopen as the JAXX bar, a smart, modern, 200+ capacity, two floored venue in the prime position surrounded by other licensed bars and clubs. JAXX is described as an "exclusive up-market modern night spot and bar."

SNAFU is to take the top floor, which has also undergone changes to include a large stage area. After the closure of popular bar and live music venue earlier this month, fitout work is now underway at its previous premises on the High Street and the building is set to reopen in Spring 2014 offering low cost retail space for talented artists, crafters and makers to sell their products and raise awareness of their brands.

Licence applications were submitted for the new Westgate venue earlier this month by Mark Etches, owner of the successful Renoir's bar in the town centre, and opening night is set for December 6.

Owned by the council, who acquired Westgate Chambers as part of the Rotherham Renaissance programme, the 5,500 sq ft premises went up for lease last year following the closure of the previous bar.

Westgate Chambers is home to a number of bars, takeaways, offices and dedicated arts space.

It's not only new bars that are opening in the town centre but new shops too. Apparel Angels, a plus size only clothing store has opened on Corporation Street alongside Koochie Koo Customization, that offers a selection of personalised gifts.
