News: Chamber and college working together

By

Six students from the painting and decorating department at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT) have been able to gain some real world experience working at the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber building on the Genesis Business Park in Rotherham.

The students have been showing off the variety of skills that they have learnt at the college by helping give the office building, where the Chamber are located, a face lift. They have been painting the ground floor of the building including a conference room and corridors.

Mark Hannigan, operations manager for Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber is also a governor at the College. After a tour of the new painting and decorating workshop that is housed at Unit 2 on Rawmarsh Road in Rotherham, Mark saw the potential to help the students gain experience from working with real life clients.

Mark said: "Here at the Chamber we have a very close relationship with Rotherham College so it seemed natural to speak with them when we decided to redecorate our offices. The staff and students from the Painting and Decorating course have been excellent throughout, even advising and matching paint colours for us. They have all been very professional from start to finish and the work they have completed is outstanding."

A number of students from the College have been receiving advice and support from the Chamber with regards to starting up their own businesses.
