The redeveloped railway station will have: a new facilities building including ticket office, passenger lounge, toilet and retail kiosk; new lifts and stairs to replace the old ramps, providing better access for passengers; CCTV cameras and better lighting to help passengers feel safer and more secure; improved passenger information; a new forecourt creating a welcoming environment for pedestrians; an improved access road providing better areas for vehicles to turn around, disabled parking, cycle stands and taxi provision; newly refurbished platforms including new canopies. The project, key to Rotherham Renaissance, is being led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) working in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), Network Rail, Northern, and Yorkshire Forward.
