News: Employers urged to employ ability

By

Employers in the South Yorkshire are being urged to challenge assumptions and focus on the abilities of disabled people. The call came from Minister for Disabled People Anne McGuire during a visit to Sheffield to launch the DWP's "Employ ability" campaign. Anne McGuire told The Star that the vast majority of employers are probably not consciously discriminating against disabled people or people with a health condition, but their recruitment processes may unintentionally prevent disabled people applying. Attending the launch was Alan Bennett from Brinsworth, Rotherham who has epilepsy and works as a transport manager at Hopleys Storage and Haulage. Innovative work is being carried out in Rotherham working with employers to help get disadvantaged people into work at The Junction in the town centre. An Employ ability workshop is taking place on May 6 at The Source at Meadowhall.
