News: Plans for Beatson Clark site refused

By

Planners have rejected a scheme to build 140 new homes on a former Barnsley factory site, despite the proposals being backed by workers at a sister plant in Rotherham. An outline planning application by glass manufacturer Beatson Clark for its former glass works site at Stairfoot was seen by the company as a way of safeguarding existing jobs at its Rotherham factory. Beatson Clark would use any funds from the development of the Stairfoot site to support its investment programme at Rotherharn and to further support the pension fund. Barnsley Council's planning board refused planning permission stating that the site is capable of accommodating a wide range of employment uses. Stairfoot closed in October 2006 and 40 staff were transferred to Rotherham including the new operations director. The Rotherham site employs around 310 people.
