News: Rotherham entrepreneur making waves in the marine safety business

By

The Yorkshire Post profiles Paul Luen, Managing Director of successful Rotherham company, Martek Marine. The company began eight years ago with three employees and £6000 in start up capital in the smallest unit in the RiDO-run Century Business Centre. The award winning company are world leaders in providing marine safety and environmental monitoring systems to the global marine industry. As one of Rotherham's biggest success stories, Martek now employs 54 people at its new purpose built premises in Adwick Park, Manvers with a turnover set to top £10m this year and profits of £1.6m. Mr Luen told The Yorkshire Post: "The hardest thing was establishing ourselves. We had no brand presence in the industry, few people had heard of us as individuals and one of the major barriers was presenting ourselves and punching above our weight. We were three guys in the UK competing with established players on the world stage, so we had to be quite creative." The three-year plan for Martek is to take the company public and double in size. The company recently secured a grant to enable the business to invest in a world class ERP (Enterprise Response Planning) system and in expanding its business premises.
