One of the challenges that face some schools is to convince students that there are some very worthwhile jobs out there, but you need to know what skills and personal qualities might be required. So when the North West Rotherham Action Zone approached Parkgate Shopping to take part in its "Working Heroes" campaign, Rotherham’s popular shopping park was pleased to oblige. Working Heroes has a number of aims; to raise aspirations of a target group of boys and their families, improve their writing levels, make them aware of job opportunities in Rotherham and provide role models in the form of the people they would shadow during their work visits. "We think that all these objectives were achieved during the visit by 12 year 8 pupils from Wingfield School to Parkgate Shopping," said campaign organiser, Stacey Almond. "The boys were very interested in what they saw and heard, and got a real buzz from the attention that was paid to them by the Parkgate staff." The group, who were accompanied by Yorkshire writer, Craig Bradley, learned about security, health and safety, retail and park management and marketing. Their next task, with the help of Craig, is to write about their experience.
