A pioneering study conducted by energy experts EMS could save a Gulf country more than £4m. Experts from Rotherham-based EMS beat off 16 other international specialist companies to conduct the study – the first of its kind in Qatar – and they identified huge savings could be made. A three-strong team flew out to the Arab country at the request of the Qatari Ministry of Energy and Industry and the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consultation (GOIC) to investigate how five companies could save energy, water plus improve their productivity. The small to medium sized companies (SMEs) ranged in sectors from plastics manufacturing, dairy processing, glass and aluminium window manufacturing, plastic moulding to metal galvanizing. "This is a major project for EMS and one we were delighted to have been selected to take on. Although we do have a range of international clients already, the icing on the cake was to beat off opposition from other countries," explained Paul Johnson, one of EMS’ energy consultants who worked on the project and the author of the report which is now with the Qatari ministry. "The project was very interesting and although the cost of energy in Qatar is very low – around 90 per cent cheaper than in the UK - the savings and improvements we identified would help both the individual companies and ultimately the country cut carbon emissions." The team found that water savings of up to 80 per cent could be saved from improving maintenance, energy consumption could be cut by up to 19 per cent and productivity boosted by up to 60 per cent in one case. As a result of the Qatari project, EMS has now been invited to carry out a similar project in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. EMS is one of the leading companies in its field. Its MD, Dr Alex Mardappitas, established the Rotherham business as the first of its kind in Yorkshire nine years ago. Since then it has advised over 1,000 organisations ranging from SMEs to blue chip companies spanning across the UK, southern Europe and the Middle East. Earlier in the year the company opened its first regional office in the Midlands to expand its work and client base.
