News: Advanced Manufacturing - Building Rotherham's Future
A significant package of measures to help UK manufacturers seize the opportunities provided by emerging technologies has been launched by Business Secretary Lord Mandelson.
Investment totalling £151.5 million has been announced as part of the Government's targeted strategies for key sectors and markets. It will expand access to information, encourage take up of new technologies and address specific challenges faced by the aerospace sector.
Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said: "At the heart of Britain's knowledge economy is our manufacturing base. High-value, highly skilled and internationally successful businesses that have worked hard to secure a lead in hi-tech global supply chains.
"This practical package of measures will help equip British manufacturers, of all sizes and sectors, to take advantage of the advanced technologies and new market opportunities now shaping our low carbon industrial future.
"It's about giving them the support they need to create jobs in Britain and export the best of British manufacturing design, technology, skills and innovation around the world".
With a long history in manufacturing and as a forerunner in new high value added manufacturing activity, Rotherham can already boast the world-class Advanced Manufacturing Park focussed on supporting businesses to make complex and high specification products, use sophisticated processes, and offer associated services.
Simon Hill, Executive Director of Business for Yorkshire Forward said: "We know that a strong manufacturing sector is the foundation of a sound economy and as such it is vital that we support the manufacturing industry – particularly in the current climate.
"The success of manufacturing companies in Yorkshire and Humber depends on a high level of design and scientific skills, in developing new designs and new processes, to stay ahead of their competition in what is an increasingly global marketplace.
"Today's funding announcement will help to ensure we have the support available for businesses on the ground, making a real difference to their bottom line."
Rolls-Royce has also announced that it will invest over £300 million in four factories in the UK, with £45 million of support to be provided by the Government. The company and its partners will also invest in new research programmes.
The world-class University of Sheffield AMRC with Boeing and the Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future are based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham and provide a flexible and integrated research facility and international benchmarking centre for improving manufacturing methods and techniques for the aerospace industry.
