News: Dormer puts Rotherham at forefront of global cutting tool development
Dormer Tools are preparing to launch pioneering new products next month from their headquarters at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.
In excess of £20m worth of orders are processed every year at the key site for sales in the UK and their export sales office on the AMP.
In addition to being the company's global centre of excellence for drilling products, much of the "behind the scenes" product development work also takes place at the AMP site. This includes vital benchmarking and market intelligence gathering, as-well-as the production of training and marketing literature.
Dormer launches new products twice per year, in February and September, with an average of more than 50 new cutting tools added to the range in any given twelve-month period. Product introductions typically include additions to Dormer's key drilling, threading and milling ranges.
Andrew Reynolds, global product manager for drilling tools at Dormer, said: "The continuing commitment to research and development provides a strong foundation for the company's future activities in high performance hole making.
"A primary focus for Dormer is the aerospace industry, where demand for innovation and productivity improvements is extremely high. One particular area of interest is the machining of new, advanced materials – such as composites, which look set to become the predominant material used in aircraft manufacture over the next decade.
"In conjunction with leading universities and research facilities, Dormer's work in this field has already resulted in tangible advances in tooling technology."
Developing a new product from inception to completion can take anywhere up to three years. Covering talking to customers, market research, research and development, prototyping, manufacturing, distribution and the training of key sales personnel.
This February, Dormer will be launching a range of taps – branded "spectrum" - which can be used across a wide range of materials and applications and D.Rapid, an express special tools service for solid carbide drills.
