News: New lighting for Rotherham town centre

By

Two innovative lighting arches are being installed which will span Vicarage Lane in Rotherham town centre, making it safer for users while at the same time highlighting Rotherham's history.

The distinctive arches have been designed to not only reflect the impact Rotherham has made in the development and production of steel but also to reflect upon the achievements of Donald Bailey, the Rotherham-born inventor who designed the original famous Bailey Bridge.

The design for the arches is based upon the ironwork as seen in the indoor market - cast iron arch sections riveted together to form the structure of the building - and the design for the Bailey Bridge.

The scheme has been co-ordinated by the Council's Neighbourhoods Investment Service and Cllr Jahangir Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said the scheme was a good example of how the authority works with the private sector.

He added: "This partnership working highlights just what can be done in both terms of housing and other benefits to local neighbourhoods. This lighting scheme is much-needed in this part of town and will benefit both local residents who live there and people walking through."

Cllr Gerald Smith, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Planning and Transportation said the the new lighting is an exciting development for one of the oldest parts of town.

He added: "Vicarage Lane dates back to medieval times and is an important feature of the town centre landscape. It is well-used by both pedestrians and people living in the new flats above the shops who will benefit from improved lighting and it will fit in really well with the recent lighting of the Minster and the improvements to the Minster Yard.

"While many arches and metal structures can look the same, what stands out with these arches is the unique reference to the Bailey Bridge and in particular, the camouflaged style of painting."

The arches have been designed by Chris Campbell of Doncaster following consultation with students from Rotherham College of Art and Technology, and have been funded in part by the Equity Housing Association, who own the flats overlooking Vicarage Lane.
