News: NICE boost for Inditherm

By

Things are hotting up for Rotherham company, Inditherm after their innovative medical products were given provisional support for use in the NHS from NICE.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence are recognised as being a world leader in setting standards for high quality healthcare and are the most prolific producer of clinical guidelines in the world.

Draft guidance from the new NICE medical technologies programme provisionally supports the use of the Inditherm patient warming mattress to prevent inadvertent hypothermia during surgery.

Following a month of consultation, final approval is expected in March, which could open up a huge market for the AIM-listed Manvers firm.

Traditional patient warming systems such as disposable blankets and forced warm air blowers are putting a significant extra burden on hospital budgets. In comparison, the Inditherm system ensures that every surgical patient can be warmed at the same running cost as a light-bulb as it uses their patented, low voltage carbon polymer technology.

The firm estimates that the Inditherm technology could allow all patients to be warmed whilst reducing annual consumable costs in the NHS by over £10m if universally adopted. The environmental savings and the clinical benefits will deliver considerable further financial savings.

Dr Carole Longson, Director of the NICE Centre for Health Technology Evaluation, said: "The supportive provisional recommendation for the Inditherm mattress advises that it should be considered for use in patients at risk of inadvertent hypothermia.

"The evidence examined indicates that as well as benefiting patients by reducing a range of serious complications associated with inadvertent hypothermia, it also benefits the NHS by saving money."

In March, Inditherm secured their largest ever single order from an NHS hospital, supplying 30 complete patient warming systems. At the time Nick Bettles, chief executive of Inditherm said: "Inditherm is the only manufacturer of specialist patient warming systems in the UK, and whilst the clinical considerations are always the driving factor behind any decision to change, it is good to find a British technology that delivers financial and environmental savings at the same time.

"Sometimes customers think the benefits our product can offer are too good to be true, but we have over 50 NHS hospitals using the system now who can confirm that there isn't a catch. At a time of severe budget constraints we hope that many other NHS Trusts will also take up the opportunity to substantially reduce costs and at the same time measurably improve patient care."
