News: Rotherham Means Business 2011 speakers announced

By

The organisers of Rotherham Means Business 2011 have released details of the inspirational keynote speakers and the full and informative seminar programme for the borough's first business and enterprise show.

National names from the world of enterprise will join Rotherham business representatives to cover subjects such as entrepreneurship, inspiration, branding, innovation, export, retail and regulation.

On March 10, the Big Hall at Magna Science Adventure Centre will be split into several zones that will enable delegates to plan their visit and pinpoint the zones that appeal the most.

BJ Cunningham, a successful entrepreneur and thought leader in the field of branding, will speak about igniting the local economy and convey his message that a brand is a promise, not a logo; and about depth, not awareness. BJ promises to challenge business owners and entrepreneurs to re-examine the truth and their brand. And this from a man who shook up the tobacco industry when he launched DEATH cigarettes.

Claire Young (pictured), director of School Speakers and Girls Out Loud, enterprise ambassador and finalist in the BBC’s Apprentice in 2008 will be hoping to inspire Rotherham’s enterprising minds with her seminar entitled: “Ignite the entrepreneur in you!” Having turned down over 500 jobs since appearing on the hit show, Claire has established a number of enterprises and used her passion to promote youth entrepreneurship and apprenticeships. She will share life lessons and valuable insight into surviving business in troubled times and highlight how anyone can be entrepreneurial by having lots of self confidence and self belief.

Later in the day, Claire will share her experiences of mentoring the government's Young Apprentice Ambassador Network and the talents that these young people have to offer a dynamic growing business.

Retail expert, George Elliott from The Source, will explain why good customer service is just not good enough anymore and that to succeed and even thrive in the difficult months ahead, businesses should be aiming at excellence, and providing the ‘wow factor’ to their customers.

Gordon Bridge, director of leading Rotherham manufacturer, AESSEAL, will be leading a seminar on innovation and discuss the development of the Templeborough firm from its origins in 1981 with five people to 1,300 people in 2011.

Peter Hoy, managing director of Dinnington-based Macalloy, will be speaking on “Igniting your business through exporting.” Macalloy are world leaders in design, manufacture and supply of threaded bar and cable systems and won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2010 for International Trade.

Liesel Whitfield is an associate solicitor at Irwin Mitchell - patrons of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber. Her seminar will provide a useful overview of recent and forthcoming developments in the fast-changing world of employment legislation.

The day's events will be hosted by broadcasting professional, Blair Jacobs. The natural communicator and BBC radio presenter and producer will ensure that the event runs smoothly and shows that Rotherham really does mean business.

Running in conjunction with Meet the Buyer, Rotherham Means Business is being organised by Rotherham Enterprise Board and Rotherham Council, sponsored by AESSeal Ltd, UK Steel Enterprise Ltd, The Source, Rotherham Work & Skills Board, and Business Link Yorkshire.

The project is part- financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
