News: Scholarships awarded to Rotherham students
Thomas Rotherham College has awarded scholarships to two of its outstanding students.
Jackey Chong, who is going to read Mathematics at Churchill College Cambridge, is the winner of the Harold Bridges Memorial Scholarship for Physical Sciences and Mathematics, donated by Mrs Shirley Bridges in memory of her husband.
Harold Bridges was one of the most distinguished old boys of Rotherham Grammar School, the predecessor of Thomas Rotherham College in the current college buildings and site on Moorgate.
In 1934 he won a scholarship to Armstrong College, which was at that time a constituent part of the University of Durham. He studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, winning the Stroud Laboratory Prize for Physics.
Harold then worked for Shell and rose to be president of the multi-national company. His widow, Mrs Shirley Bridges is a generous benefactor of the College, and this annual scholarship of £1,000 is awarded to a former TRC student in the first year of his or her course at university in science or maths-based subjects.
Katherine Henderson, who is going to read Spanish and English Literature at Edinburgh, has won the inaugural Feoffees' Scholarship for English and Languages, which marks the College's connection with the Feoffees of the Common Lands of Rotherham, the oldest charity in the town.
Dr Richard Williams, principal at Thomas Rotherham College, said: "The Scholarships are awarded on academic excellence, effort, commitment to the chosen university course and demonstrating how the Scholarship will help in pursuing that course. As expected there were some excellent applications, and Katherine and Jackey won their awards in the face of strong competition."
