News: Students visit Rotherham companies

By

Two groups of students at the University of Sheffield visited leading Rotherham businesses recently to get an insight into industry.

MSc Management students, who attend the university's prestigious Management School, were shown around Newburgh Engineering's Templeborough facility by managing director Vincent Middleton.

The tour of the precision engineering specialist included a brief presentation into Newburgh's 70 year history, as well as a question and answer session focussing on operations management.

Ian Proctor, business engagement manager at the university, said: "The Management School is indebted to companies like Newburgh. We aim to give our students both the theoretical framework they need for business and the practical skills they can use in the workplace.

"Visiting a real business and seeing how it works gives them an invaluable insights into the realities and challenges of running a successful business in a demanding economic environment."

Vincent Middleton, managing director at Newburgh, added: "We were delighted to host a visit from the University of Sheffield, and to give something back to these bright young men and women. The need for exceptional business managers is increasing as more people reach retirement age, and I am inspired by these future leaders."

Staff and students from the Institute of Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield recently visited Tata Steel Speciality, taking in a detailed tour of operations at the Rotherham site, and a presentation from key personnel.

The main aims of company site visits are to improve graduate connections with potential employers and to build on relationships to increase career opportunities for students.

Caroline Vis, Human Resources graduate at Tata Steel Speciality, provided a presentation to the students regarding her role in the organisation as a new graduate.

Caroline said: "Bearing in mind that I was in their position 18 months ago, I really enjoyed talking to the students and showing them around site. The visit was a great opportunity to inform the students about who we are (especially as we have recently rebranded), what our products are and the types of markets we supply into."
