News: Funding for Sheffield city region airport link road

By

The board of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has approved a £2m Growing Places Fund bid for the Doncaster-Sheffield Airport link road.

Last year, Doncaster Council and its private sector partners secured £18m from the government's Regional Growth Fund to progress the project that aims to open up development sites around the Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) and HelioSlough's proposed inland port development at Rossington.

The Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) will see a new link road from Junction 3 of the M18 serve the south-east of Doncaster.

James Newman, chairman of the Sheffield City Region LEP, said: "Growing Places Funding is giving important development projects across the Sheffield City Region the boost they need to deliver real economic and social benefits to residents and businesses.

"Growing Places is helping the LEP to concentrate its efforts where it matters locally, which means better value for money and real improvements for our communities and our economy."

As well as improving the Sheffield city region's connections with national and international markets, it is estimated that the £60m infrastructure project will unlock 344 hectares of development opportunities with the potential to create £1.5 billion investment from the private sector. It is hoped that this would see over 20,000 jobs created over 15 years.

Peter Dale, development director at Doncaster Council, said: "I am pleased that the LEP Board agreed to allocate Growing Places Funding to the FARRRS link road. Securing this funding is key to generating further jobs and investment in the borough.

"The new link road will greatly improve connections with national and international markets through Doncaster Airport and the Inland Port, bringing thousands of new jobs and millions of pounds of local investment to the Sheffield City Region."

Recently, the Government also confirmed that it is providing over £15m of investment for the second phase of the Southern Gateway Improvement Scheme along the A6182 White Rose Way.
