News: PES Ltd encouraging entrepreneurial spirit

By

Two enterprising engineers who established a new breed of engineering design company in Rotherham are being used to inspire a new breed of entrepreneurs.

Mike Maddock and Dan Fleetcroft of Performance Engineered Solutions (PES) Ltd, on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) have been selected as a case study for the government's "Business In You" campaign.

The partnership between private enterprise and government aims to highlight support for start-ups and growing businesses and encourage entrepreneurial spirit in 2012.

PES Ltd was established based on the F1 concept of driving innovation in multiple sectors. It specialises in enhancing the performance of components, products and systems by delivering integrated engineering thinking alongside innovative design, materials, manufacturing and testing technologies.

They have worked on a number of projects including; aerospace components, the aerodynamic and composite design for a new Moto2 racing bike, composite parts for a super lightweight, high performance road car and various R&D projects.

The pair recently attended the Farnborough International Airshow to see components that they have worked on displayed in state of the art aircraft.

The case study shows how they are working with the University Technical College in Sheffield to set up a program that will enable them to recruit people with academic or apprentice experience.

PES also received support from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme. They found a mentor who helped them develop a business plan and growth strategy.

Dan Fleetcroft, design director at PES, said: "Those are things we kept promising ourselves we would do, but when you are busy working in the here and now of your business, you need somebody to really tie you down and make you focus on those things.

"Companies are now realising they have to start researching, developing and getting the new products ready for when the market turns round to stay competitive. We want to be able to service that need."
