News: Further improvements planned to Rotherham's motorways

By

The government has committed over £5m to install new technology on the motorway network in Rotherham, designed to support the logistics industry and wider economic growth.

The Highways Agency has announced that £2.97m will be used to improve safety on the M18 in Rotherham.

The M18, from its interchange with the M1 at Hellaby to junction 3 at Doncaster, has been highlighted as an area that would benefit from Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) provision. Used in areas of frequent queues or incidents, the system includes sensors and detection equipment linked to the motorway signals to give advance warning of queues and incidents enabling drivers to seek alternate routes.

The scheme includes the installation of sensors and new signage and is set to begin this year and complete in 2015.

A second scheme, securing £2.79m, will see the current technology infrastructure upgraded between junction 31 of the M1 at Aston and junction 32. This is to link the section of motorway to the two multimillion pound "managed motorway" schemes planned for either side.

A ten mile stretch of the M1 between junctions 32 (south of Sheffield and Rotherham) and 35a (north of Sheffield and Rotherham) is set to benefit from a project costing between £124m to £174m to convert the hard shoulder to an extra traffic lane in both directions and use variable mandatory speed limits to manage traffic speeds and help reduce congestion.

The implementation of this scheme, which was due to start this year, has been delayed to allow the completion of statutory processes and an ongoing environmental assessment. Major safety concerns about the plans to use the hard shoulder as a live lane twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, continue to remain.

A similar scheme costing between £163m and £221m is planned for the stretch of motorway between Junctions 28 and 31 of the M1.
