News: Council seeks new regeneration boss

By

Rotherham Council has begun the search for a new strategic director who will take charge of departments responsible for business, investment, regeneration, planning and transport.

Last month it was confirmed that Karl Battersby, former strategic director for Environment and Development Services would leave the authority to take a new role at Wigan Council as director of economy and regeneration.

The Council is currently recruiting five directors and a chief executive as part of a new council structure finalised as part of the work under the leadership of Government-appointed commissioners, drafted in after independent reports highlighted failures and significant governance weaknesses.

The latest job advert with recruitment consultants, Hays, reads: "As strategic director, Regeneration and Environment you will lead a large and diverse range of services provided through a 1,400 strong workforce. Through your leadership of planning, regeneration and transport; culture, leisure heritage, sport and tourism and community safety & environment you will transform the landscape of Rotherham for the future.

"We are successfully bringing forward exciting regeneration schemes and working with education and business to ensure our workforce has the skills our businesses need.

"Our economic development strategy, creating 10,000 new jobs in Rotherham has now been accepted by full Council.

"Critical to Rotherham's revival will be to ensure that we have a strong voice within the Sheffield City Region, as well as the resources and expertise to secure funding and deliver successful schemes."

The directorate has a budget of some £47m per annum. Following a restructure three assistant directors will now each lead portfolios of work based on Planning, Regeneration and Transport; Culture, Sport and Tourism; and Community Safety & Environment.

Derek Myers, lead commissioner at Rotherham Council, said: "Karl has been stalwart supporter of the change programme in the Council as our existing strategic director for Environment and Development Services and he will be missed. The vacancy that his departure creates will be advertised in late October and we hope to hold interviews in January 2016."

Donna Hall, chief executive at Wigan Council, recently welcomed Battersby's appointment, saying: "We are extremely pleased that Karl has joined Wigan Council. He has been involved in successfully delivering large regeneration projects and bringing business to Rotherham.

"We are sure this experience will be highly valuable here as we look to grow the borough's economy in the years ahead."
