News: Aqua Park opening at Rother Valley

A new attraction is set to make a big splash at the popular Rother Valley Country Park this weekend - the biggest aqua park of its type in the UK.

In the south-west of Rotherham on the border with Sheffield, the 750-acre country park has four artificial lakes, recreational activities and nature reserves.

The park, created by the deliberate flooding of a former opencast coal extraction site, also hosts a range of events including park runs and triathlons. This year it has hosted national events including the ASA National Open Water Festival and the UK Cable Nationals.

Sheffield Cable Water Ski, which operates the full size cable ski and the largest wake park in the North of England on the site, is bringing more ways to wipe out with the introduction of an Aqua Park.

Complete with huge inflatable slides, a 27 ft trampoline, inflatable climbing wall, runways and blast bag, the park is the largest park in the UK made by specialists, Aquaglide. A similar aqua park has previously been in place at Rutland Water (pictured).

Described as the "ultimate outdoor water experience," the aqua park can be booked for hour sessions and for team events until the end of September. Eager regulars have been testing out the inflatables before it opens to the public on Saturday August 20.

One of the regulars is wakeboarder, Nicola Cox, a winner of TV's Total Wipeout, who will be at the opening to relive the experience. Nicola said: "Competing on Total Wipeout was an incredible and totally ridiculous experience all at the same time and I definitely had luck on my side when I won. It was a lot tougher than I could have ever predicted. I haven’t done anything like it since so I can't wait to have a go on this awesome looking aqua park and see if I've still "got it."

"To have an aqua park as huge and awesome and this one in Sheffield is quite amazing. People definitely need to get themselves down and have a go."

Run by Andrew and Joanna Granger, the site also has a licensed Lakeside Bar, cafe, BBQ area and specialist shop, Ten Feet High.
