News: Tinsley rail yard back on track

By

South Yorkshire's largest privately owned and most successful haulage contractors, Newell & Wright Group, has reopened an unused rail terminal in Rotherham.

Rothbiz revealed in February that plans had been submitted that would enable the use of land forming the eastern part of Tinsley Rail Freight Yard off Europa Way / Wood Lane as a rail freight terminal.

Having gained approval from Rotherham Council, Newell & Wright Group, which has its main depot on Sheffield Road, have been working night and day to reopen Tinsley Marshalling Yard, once the rail hub of the borough.

The yard was constructed by British Rail around 1961 ‐ 65, primarily to consolidate the activities of several smaller yards in Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire region. It had capacity for almost 4,000 railway wagons at any one time and incorporated a locomotive maintenance depot.

Much of the main body of the yard was sold for redevelopment to become Sheffield International Rail Freight Terminal (SIRFT) and two large rail‐connected warehouses now stand on the land formerly occupied by about 40 sidings over the Sheffield border.

Due to its decline in the early 80's, most of the site had become wasteland and unused, until two months of intense manual labour from Newell & Wruight staff, resurfacing, inserting new rail tracks and working on the roads which enter the site.

The first train entered the yard this month from Maersk (the largest container shipping line and vessel operator in the world) via Felixstowe. The aim is to have five trains each way every day (at around 50‐55 containers per train) once fully operational.

Stephen Newell, operations director at Newell & Wright, said: "This is another step towards cutting our carbon footprint and increasing the rail freight services we provide, it will also reduce the distance our trucks have to travel and provide more rail freight options for businesses.

Company founder Frank Newell, added: "This is just the start of a huge investment into rail freight, we plan to start phase 2 of the development, increasing capacity and job opportunities in the area. The government have asked businesses to reduce emissions, reduce traffic and make changes to support environmental initiatives and that’s exactly what we have done."

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has recently signed a new two-year deal with the Danish company A.P. Moller-Maersk - the first rail collaboration between the two companies. The agreement sees GBRf operating from Tinsley, but is a continuation of a longstanding relationship with Newell & Wright, whom GBRf have long worked with.

In 2016, Newell & Wright installed sidings at the DB Cargo site at Templeborough in Rotherham to enable a new GBRf freightline to launch between Rotherham and the Port of Felixstowe.

News: DB Cargo invest in Rotherham

By

DB Cargo UK has started work on a multi-million programme of investment to improve track and rail infrastructure at three key sites - including Rotherham.

Over the next 12 months, the UK's largest rail freight operator will replace more than 20km of track at its depots at Immingham in North Lincolnshire, Rotherham in South Yorkshire and Toton in Nottinghamshire.

Dave Ethell, Head of Safety and Operations at DB Cargo UK, said: "This investment will further improve the safety and reliability of those services we operate out of Rotherham, Immingham and Toton. These are the first of a number of strategically-important sites that we are investing in over the next five years, with others earmarked to follow.

"It will reduce the risk of derailments and improve the safety of our colleagues, ensuring minimal disruption to the services we operate for our customers. It's excellent news."

In order to reduce costs and minimise the environmental impact of the improvement work, track reclaimed from DB Cargo UK's site at Washwood Heath near Birmingham will be used to upgrade parts of Immingham and Rotherham.

Operated by haulage firm, Newell & Wright, the Rotherham terminal is becoming a key strategic hub for end users.

Last year, GB Railfreight (GBRf) added a five days per week service carrying containers for Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Newell & Wright between London Gateway and the Rotherham terminal.

Frank Newell, managing director of Newell & Wright, said: "The service GBRf provides into our terminal in Rotherham offers Yorkshire a reliable, seamless rail service which is an integral part of the supply chain."

News: Newell & Wright continues to expand Rotherham operations

By

A retrospective planning application is being submitted as a vacant Rotherham logistics site is brought back into use.

Haulage contractors, Newell & Wright Group, have been using part of the former Exel Logistics distribution depot on Grange Lane between Templeborough and Brinsworth since July but complaints have been made and the lawful planning use of the site needs to be clarified.

The company took on the DB Cargo site at Templeborough last year, creating a new rail port facility, installing six sidings, ranging from 300 to 400 metres, allowing for a significant level of rolling stock and container handling.

Since opening in the summer of 2015, Newell & Wright Group have seen a significant increase in the number of containers that are now using the rail port container facility and further investments have been made in infrastructure and capital plant equipment such as reach stackers for container handling, new hardstanding areas for container storage and a management office located on site.

Spotting a gap in the market for a rail terminal in the Yorkshire, a deal was signed for a new freightline between Rotherham and the Port of Felixstowe.

The latest application states: "The company has secured a very significant new contract for distribution of retail goods throughout the UK. The application site seemed ideal, given its location near to their existing depot, and particularly having regard to its long history for distribution purposes.

"The initial operation in early July was to move a substantial number of full containers onto the site to facilitate the start of the distribution plan. At 4 no. containers high, maximum, the site can accommodate up to 450 no. containers. The initial stocking surge completed, the daily normal routine is now under way. There up to 25no. vehicles in and 25 no. vehicles out per day (the same lorry). Each will bring an empty container in and take a full container out, or conversely a full container in and an empty container out."

The new contract has enabled the addition of ten new drivers and two new container movement operatives.

Originally built in 1990 as a former distribution depot and lorry park for Excel Logistics, the sizeable property had plans approved and was converted for industrial use in 2010 when MTL relocated from 112,000 sq ft of manufacturing space in Darnall, Sheffield.

The contract manufacturer was bought out of administration in 2015 by the WEC Group Ltd, one of the largest engineering and fabrication companies in the UK. It went on to acquire the 300,000 sq ft factory and 30 acres of land for £7m as a way of strengthening operations at its Rotherham-based site, now called MTL Advanced.

News: Newell & Wright welcomes new freightline into Rotherham

By

South Yorkshire's largest privately owned and most successful haulage contractors, Newell & Wright Group, is filling a gap in the market as a new freightline launches between Rotherham and the Port of Felixstowe.

The 33rd daily rail freight service from the Suffolk port, Britain's biggest and busiest container port, and one of the largest in Europe, is operated by GB Railfreight and consists of 33 wagons, taking advantage of the greater efficiencies longer trains allow. The destination is the DB Cargo site at Templeborough in Rotherham.

Newell & Wright has installed six sidings, ranging from 300 to 400 metres, at the Rotherham site, allowing for a significant level of rolling stock and container handling.

The operators say that, since opening in the summer of 2015, they have seen a significant increase in the number of containers that are now using the rail port container facility and further investments have been made in infrastructure and capital plant equipment such as reach stackers for container handling, new hardstanding areas for container storage and a management office located on site.

John Smith, managing director of GB Railfreight, said: "We are delighted to be working with both the port and terminal operator Newell & Wright Transport in delivering this important new service to the DB Cargo site at Rotherham.

"The 33rd daily train represents GB Railfreight's eighth intermodal flow from the Port of Felixstowe, and our second new service from Felixstowe this past year. With the help of our newly ordered Ecofret triple wagons, ultimately this will make the train 45 wagons in length, it allows us to further increase our capacity at the Port and across the network.

"Following the decline of core commodities such as coal and steel, it is important that we continue to look for growth opportunities in alternative markets such as intermodal. The introduction of this new flow highlights the benefits rail freight traffic brings to our intermodal customers, and the intention of the port and GB Railfreight to ensure the long-term competitiveness and viability of the industry."

Frank Newell, managing director of Newell & Wright Transport, added: "As a well-established container haulier for over 40 years and working with most major shipping lines we could see there was a gap in the market for a rail terminal in the Yorkshire area. Opening/operating our first rail terminal in Rotherham gives us further opportunities with our customer base.

"We feel that we can now offer a one stop shop from the Port of Felixstowe to final delivery point in the Yorkshire region. This consists of a daily rail service and onward delivery via our own fleet. We can also offer container repairs, loading and unloading of containers in to our warehouse and storage of both loaded and empty containers.

"This is an exciting opportunity for Newell & Wright Transport and we look forward to the future working with the Port of Felixstowe, GBRF and DB Cargo."

By

Freightliner, the leading UK intermodal rail freight operator for transportation of maritime containers in the UK, has announced the launch of its latest rail service from the Port of Felixstowe - to land-locked Rotherham in South Yorkshire.

The service will operate to and from the Freightliner Rail port at Doncaster after development work has finished at the site. In the interim it will be serviced at the DB Cargo site operated by Newell & Wright, at Templeborough in Rotherham.

Adam Cunliffe, managing director, Freightliner Ltd, said: "This new Freightliner service will create much needed additional rail freight capacity to meet the growing demands of customers who are looking for a faster, greener, safer and more efficient means of transporting freight over land. It is also another milestone in the Port of Felixstowe's strategy to increase freight on rail, not only by running additional services, but by lengthening the existing trains."

The 23rd daily rail service from the Port of Felixstowe, increases the total number of daily trains from the port to 32.

Joanne Turner, commercial director at Freightliner Ltd, added: "We are pleased to launch this new service from the Port of Felixstowe to meet the growing requirements of the Felixstowe customer base. When the site at Doncaster is fully developed we will look to further expand our capacity in the region, widening the opportunities for our customers."

Rothbiz reported last year that South Yorkshire's largest privately owned and most successful haulage contractors, Newell & Wright Group, had invested in a new container rail port facility in Rotherham in between Junctions 33 and 34 of the M1.

In total there are six sidings ranging from 300 to 400 metres allowing for a significant level of rolling stock and container handling. The operators say that they have seen a significant increase in the number of containers that are now using the rail port container facility and further investments have been made in infrastructure and capital plant equipment such as reach stackers for container handling, new hardstanding areas for container storage and a management office located on site.

News: New Rotherham rail port facility

By

South Yorkshire's largest privately owned and most successful haulage contractors, Newell & Wright Group, has invested in a new container rail port facility in Rotherham in between Junctions 33 and 34 of the M1.

With a Templeborough base on the Sheffield/Rotherham border, the group has four divisions covering container haulage and haulage for major shipping lines, freight forwarding and specialised logistics.

The new facility is described as a "major investment project for South Yorkshire and the immediate Rotherham region" and has taken around six months to implement.

In total there are six sidings ranging from 300 to 400 metres allowing for a significant level of rolling stock and container handling. The investment has seen the introduction of reinforced concrete standings, container loaders and a hardstanding circuit for the firm's fleet to be loaded and unloaded.

Newell & Wright Group, said: "There will be further developments at the site through the summer as we see an increase in demand for container freight being transported on the UK's rail network. The Rotherham rail port is well placed near the main UK motorway in the centre of the country so we are expecting to be very busy in the coming months."

In 1974, Frank Newell and Paul Wright formed Newell & Wright Transport, operating in those early days as a very small general haulage company from rented premises. With continued expansion, the Newell & Wright Group now has an annual turnover in excess of £50m. The group employs over 300 personnel, many of whom have remained with the company as it has expanded.
