News: Bromley Technologies up for innovation award

Rotherham-based Bromley Technologies has been named as a finalist in the innovation category at The Star's Business Awards 2010.

Set up by brothers Kristan and Richard Bromley and run with chief operating officer Mike Maddock, Bromley Technologies is based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP).

The company has three world, European and Olympic winners as its public faces - Kristan Bromley, the skeleton's first ever World and European champion, 2006 Olympic silver medallist and current world number two in the skeleton, Shelley Rudman, and Nicola Minichiello, part of the first British women's pair to win the World championship in 2009.

All three represented Great Britain at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The company specialises in athlete-focused engineering technology, with its state-of-the-art test facility that helps finesse sporting talent.

Their philosophy is to centre athletes, sports practitioners and enthusiasts at the heart of the innovation process and surround them with an extremely high calibre team of engineers, technologists and scientists with proven track records in the Olympic, Formula One Motorsport and aerospace environments.

Bromley will be up against Sheffield's Zoo Digital for the award, sponsored by Business Link, that will be announced on September 27.

Bromley Technologies Ltd will be sharing some of the secrets of their international sporting success in a global web seminar later this month.

A web seminar, in association with American company Mentor Graphics, will see Professor Kristan Bromley, CEO of Bromley Technologies illustrate how advanced engineering design and simulation software has helped the company become one of the world's top suppliers of elite winter sports equipment to professional athletes.

Using Mentor's Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software has enabled Bromley to have a direct influence on the aerodynamic usability and reliability of their skeleton bobsleds. This has shortened the design lifecycle and lead to optimal, more robust designs, all within extremely demanding competitive sporting timescales where the difference between winning and losing can be measured in fractions of a second or a few millimeters.

The webinar will take place at 7pm UK time on September 30.

News: Rapid growth companies in Rotherham

The latest rapid growth survey from The Star and chartered accountants, Barber, Harrison & Platt shows that Rotherham has more than it's fair share of rapidly growing companies.

The survey lists the top 30 business in the region based on turnover growth, and features seven companies that are based in Rotherham.

Hydra Mining Tools International is the highest placed Rotherham firm at number eight. The Kimberworth firm's turnover grew by 88% from £6.2m to £11.7m at the last year end.

Earlier this year Hydra Mining Tools made it onto The Sunday Times HSBC International Track 100 annual league table of Britain's top private companies with the fastest-growing international sales.

The company employs 128 people and produce carbide, mineral cutting tools, toolholders, cutting chains, conveyor rollers and related components that are exported to China, America, Australia and mainland Europe.

Other Rotherham companies making The Star's rapid growth survey are Ron Hull Ltd (16th), MWS Joinery (17th), ABS Industrial Resources (21st), United Carpets (25th), Acorn Industrial (29th) and AESSEAL (30th).

Contract manufacturing specialist, The MTL Group (11th) has announced plans to relocate to Rotherham.

Don Gray, a partner with Barber,Harrison & Platt told the paper: "In a business climate that has recently been characterised by a prolonged period of difficult
trading conditions, any company that has managed to grow its top line deserves to be applauded.

"This year's Top 30 have certainly earned their plaudits with more than half of the participants recording at least a 50% increase in turnover in the period under review."

News: Rotherham firms in The Star Top 100

The strength of the Rotherham business sector was highlighted this week as 15 Rotherham-based firms made it into The Star's Top 100 companies list sponsored by Barber Harrison & Platt.

Ranked by turnover, fast-growing electronics retailer, Maplin, was the highest placed Rotherham firm at number 16 with manufacturing firm, London & Scandanavian Metallurgical at 17.

Manufacturing, engineering and industrial firms performed well with Rittal, the manufacturer of enclosure systems at Hellaby, coming out as Rotherham's most profitable businesses with profits at £6.1m for 2010. Award winning mechanical seal business AES Engineering at Templeborough also posted profits of over £6m.

The list includes locally-based independent businesses, holding companies in a UK group or the ultimate UK company of an overseas-controlled group filing accounts with Companies House.

Sheffield-based supplier of insulating, roofing and commercial interiors products, SIG, topped the list, posting the highest turnover and yearly profits.

News: Rotherham companies in The Star Top 100 SMEs

The strength of Rotherham's small business sector was highlighted this week with 25 Rotherham businesses featuring in The Star's Top 100 SME's, with four in the top ten.

Compiled every year with chartered accountants, Barber Harrison & Platt, the list compiles small and medium sized enterprises in the Sheffield city region, placing the most profitable at the top.

Whirlowdale, one of the UK's largest pallet handlers, is the highest placed Rotherham business at number three thanks to a staggering 597% increase in profits from £631,000 to in excess of £4.4 million.

Even with profits falling from £3.8 million to just over £3 million, ASD Lighting is seventh overall. Huthwaite Research and History and Heraldy are eigth and ninth respectively.

SIA Ltd in Dinnintgon (16), CW Fletcher & Sons (17) and Nikken Kosakshu Europe (18) also make the top 20.

The Star Business has produced the annual survey of Top 100 SMEs in the region. ASD Lighting is again top in Rotherham and is South Yorkshire's second most profitable company, with a 50 per cent increase in profits from £2.6 million to £3.8 million. Other top Rotherham SMEs include Candlelight Products, Huthwaite, Europa, T K Lynskey, Horbury Building Systems and Roofdec. Supporters of the survey, Barber Harrison and Platt highlight that the Top 100 SMEs in this year's survey generated over £102 million in profits and employed over 9,100 people.
