News: LSM renamed AMG Superalloys

By

Rotherham-based London & Scandinavian Metallurgical Co Limited (LSM) has been renamed AMG Superalloys UK Limited.

The firm is a highly successful manufacturer of high specification metals and alloys and an acknowledged global leader in sustainable metal and powder technology. LSM recently celebrated its 75th year.

Last year, the aluminium business of LSM de-merged and now operates as AMG Aluminum UK Limited. The remaining firm has now been renamed as AMG Superalloys UK Limited with both set to continue to operate at the head office and main manufacturing plant on Fullerton Road and both remain part of the Dutch multinational, AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V.

AMG Superalloys employs around 250 employees in Rotherham, with AMG Aluminum UK employing 80.

In 2007, a number of companies including LSM's parent company, Metallurg Inc. were combined to form the AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V., which is listed on the NYSE Euronext stock exchange. The Rotherham sites come under its AMG Processing division.

AMG Aluminum was formed in 2011 by combining the aluminium activities of KB Alloys, LSM UK, and LSM Brasil with headquarters in Pennsylvania, United States.

The company produces highly engineered speciality metal products for the energy, aerospace, infrastructure, and speciality metals and chemicals end markets.

In the UK, AMG helps to control the cast structure in the production of high quality aluminium alloy products by producing grain refiners, alloying elements and hardeners, and also manufactures a variety of speciality alloys for special applications.

AMG Superalloys produces chromium metal, ferrotitanium, nickel boron and special powders. Compressor turbine blade producers require the very highest quality in their additives and utilise the firm's aluminothermic chromium metal to meet their demands.

Founded in 1938, LSM were awarded the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2013 for outstanding achievement resulting in substantial growth in overseas earnings. It exports over 85% of its specialised products for the steel, aerospace, superalloys, hard facing, welding and glass industries.

Exports account for 87% of turnover and grew over 50% in the previous three years with growth in mature and new markets including the USA, India, Sweden, Belgium, Turkey and Canada.

2013 also saw LSM lift the RBS Business of the Year Trophy at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards.

In its latest financial results, AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V. reported that revenue and earnings had decreased in the third quarter 2013 due to the speciality metals industry experiencing "double digit price declines."

An "unfavorable product mix" resulted in a 71% decline in AMG Superalloys gross margins but AMG Aluminum revenue increased 2% compared to the third quarter of 2012, despite slightly lower aluminium prices.

News: LSM celebrates 70 years in Rotherham

By

Generations of industrious Rotherham people have been working at the London & Scandinavian Metallurgical Co Ltd site since the late 1940s.

The global manufacturing company, which celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, has decided to celebrate its longevity and local heritage by putting something back into the local community – to its generations of the future.

The firm has donated much-needed cash to Canklow Woods Primary School to pay for enough interactive white boards for every class.

LSM financial director David Beare said: "We decided we wanted to give something back to the community.

"We didn’t want to just give money and leave it at that – we wanted to help in other ways as well. Raising the aspirations, awareness and understanding of businesses in the area is important on so many levels."

LSM started off on a four-acre site on Fullerton Road in Rotherham in 1949. It now employs 200 people on its expanded 74-acre manufacturing site and exports 75 per cent of its products – including chromium, ferro titanium and aluminium rod and alloys that are used in aluminium cast houses worldwide.

Human resources specialist Sarah Wilkinson from Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO) said: "We all know how difficult things are out there at the moment, but we can't just focus on the present. At RiDO, we're always looking for ways to help people and companies develop the skills and ambitions Rotherham will need now and in the future."

News: Rotherham companies offer top placements

By

Rotherham companies are working on a project that aims to link students, universities and companies together in the advanced engineering and metals (AEM) sector. Universities and companies have worked together with AEMStudents to deliver placements for materials scientist/engineering students offering them the chance to gain practical experience working within the AEM sector. For students, the placements consist of two nine-week paid industrial summer placements within an AEM sector company. The nine-week programme will also include a one-week summer school. For companies, this provides a fantastic opportunity to work with students and to guide their development, whilst they deliver results for the business. It is hoped that following succesful placements, companies will be able to offer full-time employment on graduation. Rotherham based companies, London and Scandinavian Metallurgical (LSM), Corus and Newburgh Engineering are already offering placements. Run by NAMTEC in Rotherham, the programme is being sponsored by Yorkshire Forward and is part of the Higher Level Skills Programme.
