News: Help collect Rotherham's industrial past

By

Rotherham's proud heritage in the steel industry comes under the spotlight in a new project designed to keep the memories of the town's industrial legacy burning bright.

Organisers of the "Steelos Community Oral History Project" are asking Rotherham residents to come forward with their memories of the steel industry so that they can be recorded and stored in the archives for future generations to access.

Project Manager, Sam Smith, said: "We are looking for volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to get involved in this fantastic project, which will allow future generations to get a first-hand taste of the day-to-day life of the steel industry here in Rotherham.

"The documentation that will be stored will take the form of oral history recordings and creative writing.

"In addition there will also be creative writing and song writing workshops with professional writers and musicians. The final content will contribute towards an exhibition at Magna in March 2010 which will then travel to other local libraries."

The project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been inspired by the successful Steelos "Songs Of Steel" Radio 2 Ballads, which was recently handed a Sony award for its innovative content.

To find out more come to an informal coffee morning at Rotherham Central Library on Thursday 30th July 10.30 am - 12 noon.
