News: School work continues in Rotherham

By

Work is continuing on the £200m programme to transform learning in Rotherham.

The first stage of Rotherham's plans for the future of education in the borough have been given the green light by the Government. Now, additional work has been completed to submit more detailed plans showing how Rotherham will deliver changes to its education.

The work over the summer is all part of the efforts to bring in around £100m in funding to the borough through the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. Overall Rotherham expects to receive around £200m for learning projects from the government.

The initial stage of the BSF project will see new school buildings created for five Rotherham secondary schools including Aston, Maltby, Oakwood, Swinton and St Pius.

These schools should see construction start in 2011, with an anticipated completion date in 2013.

Work on the proposed new Academy at Maltby is continuing.

Councillor Shaun Wright, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services, said: "Creating state-of-the-art new facilities in schools is a major boost both to the school community and the local community. However, it is only one element of creating a learning environment that will raise achievement levels.

"By taking this wide-ranging approach to developing learning we can involve every school in the benefits that projects like BSF can bring."

Rotherham Council is leading on the South Yorkshire procurement framework called YorBuild which includes contracts under the BSF programme.
