News: New open space in Rotherham town centre

By

Work has started in Rotherham town centre on the removal of the fountain on Howard Street outside Boots the Chemists - allowing for a new market square that will offer seating and provide extra space for events, promotions and entertainment.

The works, which are anticipated to be completed by the end of March at a cost of £50,000, will be carried out by the Council's Streetpride Service. They will see the the existing fountain structure removed together with the disconnection and removal of the associated pump and electrics.

Once that is completed, new flagstones and new ground-fixings for market stalls will be installed as will items of street furniture and seating around the area.

Cllr Richard Russell, Cabinet Member for Town Centres for Rotherham Borough Council, said the works will certainly improve this particular spot in Rotherham Town Centre as well as providing much-needed extra multi-use open space.

He said: "The aim of the improvement scheme is to open up the entrance to the popular Rotherham Markets Complex and make better use of the space for for town centre events, promotions and entertainment, such as the regular street markets.

"This new square is one of several exciting projects on-going in the town centre - such as the improvements to the Minster Yard and the development of the All Saints's pocket park - which will improve the town centre environment for both shoppers and visitors alike."

The works will not affect pedestrian access to local shops and the Rotherham Markets Complex.
