News: Rotherham town centre Christmas challenge

By

Rotherham's enterprising young people are being challenged to come up with a new idea for a Christmas event in the town centre.

Rotherham Borough Council's Marketing & Events team, working in partnership with enterprise education programme Rotherham Ready, have set a challenge to inspire young entrepreneurs to get the town centre buzzing at Christmas.

They are challenging young people to come up with a new idea for an event that could be run in town on one of the Saturday's leading up to Christmas.

Young people need to create an exciting concept, back up their ideas with some market research and produce a budget, keeping the event costs within £3,000.

The winner(s) of the most inspiring idea will receive a VIP invite to the Christmas Lights Switch-on evening during Global Entrepreneurship Week on November 17. They will meet the celebrity guests and other personalities. In addition, there could be an opportunity to work alongside the Events Team to make the event concept, or elements of it, a reality.

Marie Hayes, marketing & events manager at RMBC, said: "We have some fantastically talented and inspired young people in Rotherham who have the drive and imagination to help create some truly fantastic events here in the borough. This is an opportunity to gain invaluable insight into event organisation and management and I hope many individuals and teams take part."

Catherine Brentnall, ERDF Project Officer at Rotherham Ready, added: "Creating an event concept, then working with the events team would be a fantastic addition to any young person’s CV and would enhance their experience and skills. In a competitive jobs market, this is the kind of thing that shows employers you’ve got something special about you."
