News: Duke of Kent at New York

By

The Duke of Kent, KG is scheduled to visit the New York Stadium, the home of Rotherham United, later this month.

Prince Edward is likely to perform the official opening on March 12 but will miss seeing The Millers in action as they are due to play away at fellow League Two club, Wycombe Wanderers, that evening.

On the site of the former Guest & Chrimes Foundry, close to Rotherham town centre, the £20m development hosted its first games this season.

The royal visit kicks off a number of high profile events at the 12,000-seater stadium. In April, Rotherham will host Hope Powell's England as they prepare for Euro 2013 with a friendly against Canada.

Tony Stewart, chairman of Rotherham United, said: "We feel privileged that the Football Association have granted Rotherham United the opportunity to host this international game at the New York Stadium.

"When we opened the New York Stadium, we wanted to showcase it to the biggest audience as we could and after a number of sell-outs we are set to capture a new audience. We look forward to putting our home on show for the world to see, in what I believe will be a very good game."

Tickets for the game on April 7 are priced at £5 adults, and £2.50 concessions (Under 16's, Students and Over 65's).

Under 8's will be admitted free when accompanied by a full paying adult, and to encourage families to witness the first ever international to be held at the venue, there will be a family ticket available for £10 (two adults and two children).

Developments at the stadium are also moving ahead with the recent planning approval for a 575 sq m gym and fitness centre on the corner of the North and main West stand.

The club has recently applied for planning permission for conferences, events, meetings, weddings and educational uses to take place in the stadium's 1,000 sq m, flexible hospitality areas on non-matchdays.

The club are also considering car boot sales on Sundays.
