News: Closures and reopenings at Rotherham venues

It's the last big weekend at a popular Rotherham bar, and all change at the town's nightclub.

Hedonism, formerly Mazeppa, is set to close after this weekend following the conclusion of the sale of the prominent building at the foot of Ship Hill.

The freehold of the property was put up for sale by leisure property specialist Fleurets "due to the pending retirement of the owner and presents an opportunity for new owners to develop and promote trade at a well presented and equipped nightclub on the circuit."

The Naylor family, who have operated the bar since 2000, acquired the freehold of both the ground and upper floors, then utilised as offices. The bar was refurbished in two phases, expanding upstairs to create a cocktail lounge.

The freehold of the property went on the market for £360,000 and included space rented out to an adjacent nightclub and takeaway. Offers were also being considered for Hedonism without the rental units. The bar has been operating on Friday and Saturday nights and was boosted by opening during the day on matchdays.

Sold, subject to contract, the operators are advertising the closing down party this weekend. They add that the future of the building could be as a new restaurant.

Across the road, preparations are underway for the latest renaming of Pop Nightclub where Hub Rotherham will be taking over the venue as new owners continue to work with the current management team.

A key building in the council-led Townscape Heritage Initiative area of town, Essoldo Chambers was built in 1913 as the Empire Theatre and was designed by Chadwick and Watson of Leeds, who designed the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford a year later. Now used as a nightclub, the building also housed a cinema until 1990.

Previous names for the club include Pop, Synergy and Beach having previously been New York, New York.

Hub Rotherham is set to open tonight.
