News: Henderson's withdrawal is a sauce of disappointment for Yorkshire Crisps

By

The Rotherham-based Yorkshire Crisp Company has had to stop producing its Henderson's Relish flavoured crisps.

The luxury hand cooked crisps and popcorn maker is based at Waleswood where its award-winning produce is made by a small, dedicated team using the finest local ingredients for a local, national and international market.

A match made in South Yorkshire saw Sheffield-based Henderson's combine its spicy sauce with Yorkshire Crisps back in 2008 but now the historic firm has decided to stop supplying the crisp maker.

Instead, the manufacturer has launched its new Worcester Sauce flavour.

A statement from Yorkshire Crisps explained: "This is in response to Henderson's decision to stop supplying us as they are exploring expansion opportunities to promote the Henderson’s Relish brand. They are focusing on their future priorities and, after much deliberation, are to no longer supply product to Yorkshire Crisps.

"Our new Worcester Sauce Yorkshire Crisps are now available in single 40g bags and our re-sealable stay-fresh 100g drums. We are very disappointed to be unable to continue our association with the iconic Yorkshire brand that is Henderson's, which is local to our home town, but we respect their decision and hope you will enjoy our new Worcester Sauce Yorkshire Crisps."

The Yorkshire Crisp range now has four flavours that that are suitable for vegans – the new Worcester Sauce flavour, plus Sweet Chilli & Lime, Natural Sea Salt or Nowt On. The whole range is now gluten-free.

Tim Wheatley of The Yorkshire Crisp Company, said: "After listening to our customers and to feedback from our tasting panels, it became very clear to us that we needed to incorporate more flavours that are plant-based.

"This has allowed us to widen our audience appeal and respond to exciting current market trends and we are thrilled to have launched our new Worcester Sauce Yorkshire Crisps with this in mind."

News: Beatson Clark updates Hendo's bottle

By

Beatson Clark and Henderson's, two long-established South Yorkshire businesses have worked together to create a lighter, more environmentally friendly glass bottle.

Beaton Clark has been making glass bottles and jars in Rotherham since 1751, specialises in providing glass packaging solutions for niche brands in the food, drink and pharmaceutical markets worldwide.

Henderson's Relish – known locally as Hendo's – has been made in Sheffield since 1885. The comedian Tom Wrigglesworth said that while "outsiders" think it is Sheffield's answer to Worcestershire sauce, Sheffielders think it is the answer to everything.

The family firm called on experts at Beatson Clark who have produced new glass packaging that contains 30% recycled material, with up to 10% collected locally and processed in onsite recycling plant at Greasborough Road.

The bottle has "Henderson's Relish" embossed above its signature label and "Henderson's Sheffield" on the base, a redesign that honours the memory of historic Henderson's bottles from the early years of the last century.

The embossing was created using Beatson Clark's state-of-the-art sculpting software. This allows the company to create complex designs and replicate them perfectly in the finish moulds, which results in a high-quality, well-defined and consistent embossing.

Chris Palmer, business development manager at Beatson Clark, said: "We are always very pleased to work with local businesses, and to design and manufacture a bespoke bottle for such a well known local brand as Henderson's was a real pleasure."

"This is a great example of closed loop manufacturing because we recycle local domestic waste at our on-site recycling plant and re-use the glass to make new bottles and jars.

"Henderson's has a long heritage and we think it’s fitting that the new embossed bottle we designed pays tribute to the brand's history."

News: Relishing the regional link up

By

Creative Sheffield report that the link up between Sheffield's famous Henderson's Relish and Rotherham based Yorkshire Crisps has led to the newly launched crisps becoming one of the company’s top selling flavours. The managing director of Yorkshire Crisps in Waleswood, Tony Bishop said: "The success of the flavour is owed to the great taste of Henderson’s Relish, combined with our quality potatoes and commitment to only use completely natural flavours. The response from retailers has been overwhelming, and we are expecting some orders from larger nationwide companies in the next few months." Yorkshire Crisps’ potato farmer Simon Hinchliffe has been providing the company with potatoes for over three years, and presents the Henderson’s flavour to his farm visitors. Simon comments: "We jumped at the chance to supply an end-user directly, as we have felt disconnected from the food chain. In the past we have dealt with large, faceless corporations, but with Yorkshire Crisps we know what is produced from our crop, and where they are sold. We deliver on tractors straight from our field to the nearby Yorkshire Crisps factory. We’re delighted to be associated with Yorkshire Crisps, it’s a great product and I am proud that they are made out of our potatoes."
