News: Henderson's withdrawal is a sauce of disappointment for Yorkshire Crisps

By

The Rotherham-based Yorkshire Crisp Company has had to stop producing its Henderson's Relish flavoured crisps.

The luxury hand cooked crisps and popcorn maker is based at Waleswood where its award-winning produce is made by a small, dedicated team using the finest local ingredients for a local, national and international market.

A match made in South Yorkshire saw Sheffield-based Henderson's combine its spicy sauce with Yorkshire Crisps back in 2008 but now the historic firm has decided to stop supplying the crisp maker.

Instead, the manufacturer has launched its new Worcester Sauce flavour.

A statement from Yorkshire Crisps explained: "This is in response to Henderson's decision to stop supplying us as they are exploring expansion opportunities to promote the Henderson’s Relish brand. They are focusing on their future priorities and, after much deliberation, are to no longer supply product to Yorkshire Crisps.

"Our new Worcester Sauce Yorkshire Crisps are now available in single 40g bags and our re-sealable stay-fresh 100g drums. We are very disappointed to be unable to continue our association with the iconic Yorkshire brand that is Henderson's, which is local to our home town, but we respect their decision and hope you will enjoy our new Worcester Sauce Yorkshire Crisps."

The Yorkshire Crisp range now has four flavours that that are suitable for vegans – the new Worcester Sauce flavour, plus Sweet Chilli & Lime, Natural Sea Salt or Nowt On. The whole range is now gluten-free.

Tim Wheatley of The Yorkshire Crisp Company, said: "After listening to our customers and to feedback from our tasting panels, it became very clear to us that we needed to incorporate more flavours that are plant-based.

"This has allowed us to widen our audience appeal and respond to exciting current market trends and we are thrilled to have launched our new Worcester Sauce Yorkshire Crisps with this in mind."

News: Tasty deal for Yorkshire Crisps

By

The Yorkshire Crisp Company has shown its appetite for growth by expanding into further units at its Rotherham manufacturing base.

The luxury hand cooked crisps and popcorn maker has renewed its lease and acquired another unit at Waleswood Industrial Estate - meaning the company now occupies four units on the popular business park.

The company, founded in 2005 by businessman and part-time farmer Ashley Turner, produces its award-winning produce using a small, dedicated team using the finest local ingredients for a local, national and international market.

Prestigious stockists of Yorkshire Crisps include John Lewis food halls, West End theatres, Virgin Atlantic, and Malmaison Hotels.

Yorkshire Crisps has taken a five year lease on its existing three units and a new five year lease on an adjacent 3,334 sq ft unit – totalling 14,060 sq ft of manufacturing, storage and office space.

Solicitors Wake Smith advised on the lease for Yorkshire Crisps for the new premises.

Ashley Turner, director of Yorkshire Crisps (pictured, centre), said: "This location really works for us. We pride ourselves on local connections - our crisps are made from carefully selected potatoes that are grown by local farmers on the chalky soils of the Yorkshire Wolds and we source all our packaging from Yorkshire suppliers. That means we have to be easily accessible for our suppliers and our employees."

Tom Weightman, solicitor in Wake Smith's commercial property division (pictured, left), added: "We were really pleased to be able to advise on the lease requirements.

"We are delighted to have helped this popular independent business maintain its Yorkshire roots and expand in their existing location. We wish them the best of luck for the future."

In 2017 sales of Yorkshire Crisps' gourmet products, which have won Best Snack in the Caterer and Hotelkeeper Awards for Excellence Awards and Gold Great Taste Awards, grew with an increase in turnover of 28% to £2.1m.

By

Two Rotherham companies are celebrating after winning prestigious Great Taste Awards for 2011.

Organised by the Guild of Fine Food and now in their 18th year, the awards are the most trusted and recognised food and drink awards in the country. They are the speciality food and drink equivalent of the Michelin star in fine dining.

The Yorkshire Crisp Company has been presented with a coveted one-star Gold Great Taste Award for its Roast Lamb and Mint gourmet crisps.

The Waleswood company produces hand-made gourmet crisps made from local vegetables and totally natural flavours and the new flavour was launched earlier this year following a national competition.

Tim Wheatley, sales director at The Yorkshire Crisp Company, said: "We are thrilled to have won this award with our new limited edition guest flavour, which is our first non-vegetarian crisp.

"Winning a Great Taste Award recognises the efforts we go to in producing our luxury crisps and because of its success, we are now going to make the Roast Lamb and Mint flavour a permanent line in our range. We are also extending the range by launching Lamb & Mint in our unique 100g drums in October."

The crisps are exported across the world an are sold in regional supermarkets and John Lewis Food Halls, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.

Very Delicious managed to go one better by gaining two of the coveted one-star Gold Great Taste Awards - one for its White Chocolate and Raspberry Cheesecake and one for its Gluten Free Almond and Orange cake.

Parkgate-based Very Delicious specialise in handmade desserts and buffets. They use local ingredients from local companies combined with recipes that have been perfected to give that extra sparkle.

Fiona Morgan, catering director of Very Delicious said: "We are delighted with these awards. Winning a Great Taste Award recognises the hard work and dedication that has gone into making desserts our customers come back time and time again for.

"We pride ourselves on making cheesecakes and cakes that will make your taste buds tingle."

For the 2011 Great Taste Awards, over 7,400 products were judged over an intense two-month period. Each food entered receives feedback from a panel of over 300 judges and before gold is awarded, a minimum of 12 experts, often 16, have to taste, discuss and agree.

Bob Farrand, chairman for The Great Taste Awards, said: "Winning Gold in the country's largest and most respected independent food accreditation scheme is a massive pat on the back for any producer – independent proof their products are of the highest quality."

News: Crisp business defies crunch

By

Creative Sheffield report on the Rotherham business, Yorkshire Crisp Company that is seemingly defying the economic climate by sending out its largest order to date – a staggering 44,000 drums. Yorkshire Crisps Managing Director, Tony Bishop said: "There has been so much talk about the economic downturn and how small companies are struggling to keep their heads above water, but conversely we have found the negative climate has had a positive impact on our sales. "At Yorkshire Crisps we have worked hard to keep our production costs as low as possible, without impacting on our quality. Sourcing products locally has meant rising fuel prices have had a minimal impact on our raw material costs. For instance our crisps are grown at a farm five miles down the road and are delivered by tractor." The recently launched Henderson’s Deliciously Spicy Yorkshire Crisps has fast become one of the company’s top selling flavours.

News: Yorkshire folk favour the local flavour

By

Creative Sheffield report on the recent survey conducted by Rotherham firm, Yorkshire Crisps, where researchers found that over 70% of Yorkshire folk preferred the Yorkshire Crisps’ flavours when compared with a national, well-known brand. The blind taste-test took place at Meadowhall Shopping Centre during a food focused week which saw celebrity chef James Martin cooking some adventurous dishes for shoppers. Feedback from those questioned to describe Yorkshire Crisps included: "better taste and flavour", "thicker", "crunchier", "less salty" and "how I expect a crisp to be". The Yorkshire Crisps survey results also revealed that 96% of people questioned would rather support local producers, such as the Waleswood based Yorkshire Crisps, than large corporate businesses. Tony Bishop, Managing Director of Yorkshire Crisps said: "Based on appearance, taste and aroma, I’m delighted that our convivial crisps are favoured over a national well-known crisp brand. Larger companies who are able to distribute on a larger scale often have a higher profile, however these landslide survey results demonstrate that supporting local food brands isn’t just important for the local economy, but local produce tastes better too!"

News: Relishing the regional link up

By

Creative Sheffield report that the link up between Sheffield's famous Henderson's Relish and Rotherham based Yorkshire Crisps has led to the newly launched crisps becoming one of the company’s top selling flavours. The managing director of Yorkshire Crisps in Waleswood, Tony Bishop said: "The success of the flavour is owed to the great taste of Henderson’s Relish, combined with our quality potatoes and commitment to only use completely natural flavours. The response from retailers has been overwhelming, and we are expecting some orders from larger nationwide companies in the next few months." Yorkshire Crisps’ potato farmer Simon Hinchliffe has been providing the company with potatoes for over three years, and presents the Henderson’s flavour to his farm visitors. Simon comments: "We jumped at the chance to supply an end-user directly, as we have felt disconnected from the food chain. In the past we have dealt with large, faceless corporations, but with Yorkshire Crisps we know what is produced from our crop, and where they are sold. We deliver on tractors straight from our field to the nearby Yorkshire Crisps factory. We’re delighted to be associated with Yorkshire Crisps, it’s a great product and I am proud that they are made out of our potatoes."
