News: Green Group's green belt plans updated

By

Expansion plans have been updated that would enable the Rotherham logistics firm, The Green Group, to create hundreds of jobs on a former brickworks.

Rothbiz reported back in 2017 on a planning application to replace the existing warehouse, offices and repair buildings on the group's current Maltby site - part of the Ibstock brickworks - with a new build, 100,000 sq ft bonded warehouse with offices.

The Green Group is a long-established logistical solutions company and employs more than 250 people in a variety of roles at Maltby - its headquarters. It works with multinational brands and companies, including Kellogg’s, Morrisons, DHL, Wincanton and XPO, and services include commercial cargo, freight and road haulage, pallet and storage services, with multiple sites across the United Kingdom, as well as international operations.

The plans were approved after originally being recommended for refusal due to the site being within the borough's green belt.

Members of the planning board went against the officer's recommendation, voting nine to three, not to refuse the plans, despite planners stating that the development and jobs could be located in more preferable locations designated for employment use and not in the green belt.

Members considered that the proposed development would be beneficial for the local economy, generating significant additional jobs, on a site that is already occupied by the applicant, and that these amounted to the very special circumstances to justify the inappropriate development in the green belt.

Green Group say that the plans were implemented in 2020 with the foundation excavations and associated works for the replacement office works but now a new planning application has been submitted with changes to the proposals.

The plans, drawn up by David L Walker Limited, explain: "Following the grant and subsequent implementation of the planning permission, the applicant has acquired additional land within the vicinity of the application site and have taken the opportunity to review the design and layout of the approved development to determine if any refinements could be made to support ongoing operations.

"To improve traffic routing through the site, including access to the adjacent mineral workings and also to minimise disruption to the Green Group’s existing operations during construction of the replacement office and warehouse facilities, it is proposed to revise the approved site layout."

The proposal would also "improve access to the adjacent land in the context of future potential development opportunities."

The revised layout includes a minor reorientation of the approved, replacement warehouse by approximately 20 degrees, relocation of the approved lorry parking and loading/unloading areas, and building canopy from the north to the east of the application site.

The relocation of the approved, replacement office facilities from the western frontage of the replacement warehouse to the southern frontage is also proposed. The approved car parking for office staff and visitors will also be relocated to the south and changes to the access road are also proposed.

A landscape scheme was approved in the 2017 plans.

The plans conclude: "The site is located in an industrial area with industrial and commercial operations to the immediate west and permitted clay pit and former brickworks to the north.

"The applicant’s existing operations at the site are also well established and a number of environmental controls are or will be put in place by virtue of the planning permission.

"The approved and proposed development in this regard will facilitate growth in the applicant’s base of operations at the application site, with more than 200 jobs created and more than 250 existing jobs safeguarded through the applicant retaining its headquarter operations at the application site."

News: Council gives green light for Green Group's Green Belt plans

By

The exact same plans that were recommended for refusal are heading back before Rotherham's planning board having since been approved.

Rothbiz reported last month that expansion plans from Rotherham logistics firm, The Green Group, that could create hundreds of jobs on a former brickworks, were being recommended for refusal due to the site being in the Green Belt.

A planning application was submitted to replace the buildings on the current Maltby site - part of the Ibstock brickworks - with a new build, 100,000 sq ft bonded warehouse with offices.

Members of the planning board went against the officer's recommendation, voting nine to three, not to refuse the plans, despite planners stating that the development and jobs could be located in more preferable locations designated for employment use and not in the Green Belt.

Members considered that the proposed development will be beneficial for the local economy, generating significant additional jobs, on a site that is already occupied by the applicant, and that these amount to the very special circumstances to justify the inappropriate development in the Green Belt.

Planners however previously said that: "It is not considered that any of the submitted information put forward represent a very special circumstance to justify the inappropriate development proposed. No other very special circumstances have been put forward to overcome the inappropriate nature of the development and the harm by way of its impact on the openness of the Green Belt in this location."

Permission was previously approved for clay extraction but the Green Belt site was due to be reclaimed and the land re-graded by 2025. The site is set to keep its Green Belt status in the borough's Local Plan. An existing warehouse building is unauthorised.

Local MP, Sir Kevin Barron, is backing the plans due to the proposed additional jobs, potentially over 150, that would be created in the local area.

The application will go back before the board again this week, after the planning officer, in consultation with the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the Planning Board, agreed on reasons for granting planning permission, subject to a number of conditions.

The plans will then be referred to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government as a departure from the Development Plan. The Government could then "call in" the plans for further scrutiny and has the power to refuse plans for development in the Green Belt.

Formed in 2008, The Green Group started its fleet with just five MAN trucks in 2010 while based at Hellaby Hall Industrial Estate. Moving to a nearby 14-acre site at Maltby in 2012 allowed the firm to build a small transit shed and expand the transport offices. Within two years, the business increased to 90 trucks and 137 trailers, and staff grew by 100 to include new drivers, administrators, engineers, and customer service and warehouse staff.

News: Green Group facing refusal in Green Belt

By

Expansion plans from a Rotherham logistics firm that could create hundreds of jobs on a former brickworks are recommended for refusal due to the site being in the Green Belt.

Rothbiz reported last year that the Green Group was putting the wheels in motion for a large-scale expansion at its Maltby depot - a move that could increase local job numbers to over 200.

A planning application was submitted to replace the buildings on the current Maltby site - part of the Ibstock brickworks - with a new build, 100,000 sq ft bonded warehouse with offices. It is set to go before councillors on the Rotherham planning board next week, and they are being recommended by planning officers to refuse the plans.

Permission was previously approved for clay extraction but the Green Belt site is due to be reclaimed and the land re-graded by 2025. The site is set to keep its Green Belt status in the borough's Local Plan. An existing warehouse building is unauthorised.

The officers report states: "The immediate locality is one that can be described as being free from permanent development and is an important gap between the settlements of Hellaby and Maltby. The landscaping of the site and its immediate environs contributes to the open character of the locality which represents undulating topography.

"Although the building has been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible (coloured in an appropriate finish and set down from adjacent land where possible) its presence, in terms of its significant size and mass taking up much of the application site, is considered to be of significance and any limited landscaping around the periphery of the site could only give minimal screening."

It goes on to conclude that very special circumstances have not been demonstrated by the applicants and that there are other suitable sites in the borough.

The planners conclude: "The proposed building represents an increase in floorspace of approximately 766% over and above that authorised at the site, which would have a significant impact on the openness of the Green Belt in this location and would, therefore, represent inappropriate development in the Green Belt.

"It is not considered that any of the submitted information put forward represent a very special circumstance to justify the inappropriate development proposed. No other very special circumstances have been put forward to overcome the inappropriate nature of the development and the harm by way of its impact on the openness of the Green Belt in this location.

"It is considered that the proposed employment use would be better located on land allocated for employment within the Borough and not on this Green Belt site."

Local MP, Sir Kevin Barron, is backing the plans due to the proposed additional jobs, potentially over 150, that would be created in the local area.

News: The Green Group planning Rotherham expansion

By

Rotherham logistics firm, The Green Group is putting the wheels in motion for a large-scale expansion at its Maltby depot - a move that could increase local job numbers to over 200.

With over 25-years experience in the logistics sector, The Green Group is a member of the Freight Transport Association. The company also offers warehousing facilities, construction and civil engineering work, and has a number of other business interests in the commercial property market.

In 2014 the group acquired the Worksop warehousing operation of Seafield Transport which protected in excess of 70 jobs and secured over 200,000 sq ft of warehousing.

Now a planning application has been submitted to replace the buildings on the current Maltby site - part of the Ibstock brickworks - with a new build, 100,000 sq ft bonded warehouse with offices.

The plans, drawn up by consultants at Simon Elliott Associates, estimate that if the plans are approved and implemented, the existing job numbers on site could increase from 105 full-time and ten part-time, up to 190 full-time and 25 part-time.

The plans state: "The applicants' business has expanded quite significantly over the past few years and there is now an ever increasing need for additional storage space onsite.

"The applicants have considered a number of options for the provision of additional storage space and have rented premises remote from this site, including a large warehouse in Worksop. However, their tenancy has been terminated and as their existing warehouse operates in an efficient manner it was decided that the best form of development was to effectively extend that existing facility."

The company currently operate 90 HGV tractor units from the site and this is projected to increase to 120. The applicants believe that the expansion would not result in a significant increase in the level of traffic entering and leaving the site on a daily basis. Delivering over long distances means that tractor units only tend to visit the site on two or three occasions a week.

News: Green Group invest in new fleet

By

Rotherham logistics firm, The Green Group has placed one of the biggest orders yet for low-emission trucks from Mercedes-Benz as it signs up to Pall-Ex, the European palletised freight network.

With over 25-years experience in the logistics sector, Maltby's The Green Group is a member of the Freight Transport Association. The company also offers warehousing facilities, construction and civil engineering work, and has a number of other business interests in the commercial property market.

The company has left UK Pallets to join the Pall-Ex network and will take control of coverage for part of the S and part of the DN postcode areas.

Steven Reed, network development director at Pall-Ex, said: "The Green Group is a leading name in UK haulage and we are more than happy to welcome them to the network."

Mark Steventon, depot principal at The Green Group, added: "Pall-Ex is considered to be the leading brand in the European palletised freight sector and is well known for its service levels. As a company, it very much matches all of the values that we emphasise here at The Green Group."

The Green Group has also announced that it will take delivery of 50 low-emission Euro VI trucks supplied by local dealer, Northside Truck & Van. The new 50 Actros tractor units follow on from the 30 new trucks that went into operation last year.

Rebecca Wharmsby, assistant managing director at The Green Group, said: "We strive as a business to do all that we can to reduce our carbon footprint, not least because customers invariably ask us when conducting their own annual reviews, what we're doing to cut emissions.

"By investing before we needed to do so in clean, Euro VI technology from Mercedes-Benz, we've proved that not only are we Green by name, we're also green by nature."

News: 100 in 100 success in Rotherham

By

Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT) and the Source Academy have surpassed their goal of recruiting 100 apprentices in 100 days.

The 100 in 100 Challenge began in February with the goal of recruiting 100 apprentices into apprenticeships in 100 days. The campaign hopes to boost the presence of Apprenticeships in the area and to help the local economy.

In total, 108 apprentices were recruited within Rotherham businesses during the 100 day period in the joint effort between Rotherham College and the Source. The partnership between the two has played a key role and ensured its success, raising overall awareness on the benefits of recruiting an apprentice and the impact it can have on a business.

Stephen Casey, head of Business Improvement at Rotherham College, said: "The entire 100 in 100 campaign has been a real success and the feedback from both employers and apprentices has been fantastic.

"To over achieve on our objective is phenomenal and we couldn’t have done this without the support of The Source and Rotherham Businesses.

"The aim is to now keep this momentum going working with the local business community offering people that first step into employment via an apprenticeship."

The Green Group, a Maltby based company, had never used apprentices before but decided that it was a great way to help the local community and a secure the future for a handful of individuals.

Due the company expanding in the last four years from a small distribution company with only a couple of trucks to having around a fifty vehicle fleet, they were in desperate need of more staff. They decided to come to Rotherham College for apprentices to work and train at the company.

Now they currently have three apprentices training with them covering a range of apprenticeships from HGV Mechanics to Accountancy to Administration.

Rebecca Wharmsby, commercial executive at The Green Group, said: "This is the first time we have had apprentices working for us and are very happy indeed."
