News: No counter offer from Santander in Rotherham

By

Santander is keeping its Rotherham town centre branch open but removing the counter service as part of plans it says will help them "better serve the changing needs of its customers."

The Effingham Street branch is part of a proposed transformation of the branch network that will result in the closure of 95 branches. Santander's refreshed network is set to consist of 349 branches, including 290 full-service branches, 36 reduced hours branches, 18 counter-free branches and five Work Cafés.

An update from Santander on the changes reads: "We last did a major review of our branches in 2021. Since then, our customers are choosing to use Mobile, Online and Telephone Banking more, and branches less.

"We’ve now done a more recent review of our branches, looking at where they’re located, how they’re used and the other local banking options available.

"When deciding to switch this branch to a counter free service, we looked at how the branch is being used and how customers are banking in other ways."

93% of Rotherham customers already use a variety of ways to do their banking with 71% of branch customers using online, mobile or telephone banking services. 19% of branch customers also use another Santander branch.

Even without a counter, Santander say the Rotherham branch will still offer almost all of the services as a full branch for personal and business customers - all except coin-based transactions.

The bank stated: "Counter-free branches enable customers to interact with Santander staff face-to-face, but without the traditional banking teller behind a counter. Customers will continue to be able to bank as normal, with the majority of services still available and additional colleagues on hand to support customers."

A free-to-use ATM is expected to remain in the unit after the counter is removed from August 11 2025. The nearest full-service branches will be in Sheffield city centre and Barnsley town centre.

A spokesperson for Santander UK, said: "As customer behaviour changes, we are ensuring that our branches remain fit for the future. Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside Work Cafés, counter-free branches and reduced hours branches, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face money management and guidance. As a business, we must move with customers and balance our investment across all the places where we interact with customers, to deliver the very best for them now and in the future."

Following a number of acquisitions, including Abbey National, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley, Santander once had three branches in close proximity in Rotherham town centre.

News: Rotherham export experts set for expansion with £20m Santander support

By

Advanced Alloy Services, a Rotherham-based supplier of high purity metals, revert and toll-process for the manufacture of high temperature superalloys, has received a £20m funding package from Santander Corporate and Commercial Banking.

The aim is to grow its business both domestically and internationally, as it pursues its strategy for growth in the UK, US and Asia.

Founded in 1993 the company underwent an MBO in 2019 and now operates from a purpose built 44,000 sq ft facility in Dinnington on the former colliery site supplying high purity pure metals and fully processed and certified superalloy revert to customers all over the world.

The new financing agreement will also allow the business to expand its partnerships with UK universities to research and develop new critical metals recovery processes with material from secondary sources. Financial support from Santander will facilitate these crucial innovation projects and help the UK develop security of supply of critical minerals and metals, essential for key infrastructure projects. Metal recovery projects will also help towards Net Zero targets, by reducing reliance of metals from primary sources and corresponding high carbon emissions from mining and refining processes.

Earlier this year, Advanced Alloy Services was recognised for its outstanding achievements in International Trade with a King’s Award for Enterprise. A presentation recently took place in Dinnington with His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Dame Hilary Chapman.

The firm has a turnover of £56.7m and employs over 40 people.

Stephen Hall, Managing Director, Advanced Alloy Services, said: "With our new financing arrangement, Santander has differentiated themselves from other banks. Crucially, they have demonstrated support for the UK metals industry and with it the UK Critical Mineral Strategy, helping security of supply essential for key infrastructure. The onboarding team have been exceptional and facilitated a smooth transition in record time."

Liz Pickering, Relationship Director, Santander Corporate and Commercial, added: “We are delighted to have supported Advanced Alloy Services and delivered a bespoke refinance package which will support the company’s exciting opportunity for UK and international growth. Advanced Alloy Services Ltd is a well-established local business growing in its sector. The remit at the outset from the management team was to provide a flexible funding solution to enable the metal supplier to maximise international growth, which we achieved by working alongside UKEF. This has been collaborative approach, and we look forward to continue working with the Advanced Alloy team.”

The package includes a £10m General Export Finance facility (GEF), £10m Invoice Finance, FX facilities, and transactional banking, which offers the metals business flexibility, tailored to its needs.

News: New banking hub for Wath

By

Wath is set to get a new banking hub, the town's MP has confirmed.

In the north of the Rotherham borough, Wath was left without a High Street bank after two leading banks announced in 2017 that they were turning their backs on the town as part of closure programmes.

Following the previous closure of the Santander branch, CYBG PLC, the parent company of Yorkshire Bank (now Virgin Money), and HSBC, both announced that their Wath-upon-Dearne branches would close.

Branches have closed across the borough, and the UK, as the number of users fall as customers increasingly use other forms of banking such as online or via apps.

Now face-to-face banking is set to return to Wath with a Banking Hub. The hubs are dedicated places where communities can access everyday personal and business banking services, such as withdrawing and depositing cash easily, or paying in cheques, over the counter.

Representatives form the major banks, inlcuding Santandar, Virgin Money and HSBC, are available on different days but availability will vary for each Banking Hub based on local demand.

Owned by Cash Access UK, funded by the banks, and run by the Post Office, they're a way of bringing back banking to the people and areas that need it.

Banking hubs are established by LINK who have identified need for access to cash and banking services to meet local demand, following bank branch closures in the community. The Post Office is then contracted to operate the Banking Hubs site and provide vital cash services to the local community.

John Healey, MP for Wentworth & Dearne, said: "There’s been a great strength of public support for my campaign to restore services over the past six years since we were left without any bank branches in the town.

"I’ve been working hard to make the case for a Banking Hub in Wath, including getting assessors out to see the need for themselves.

"The announcement will be welcomed by many residents who only bank in branch and can’t go online as well as our local businesses who need somewhere to go to access funding and deposit cash.

"The banking hub will now be delivered by Cash Access UK. Over the next few weeks, it will begin to engage with the local community and to start looking for potential sites."

News: Planet X saddles up with Santander to go for growth

By

Rotherham-based retailer, Planet X, is on track to realise ambitious international growth plans having secured £3.225m funding facilities following a move to Santander UK.

With a base at Templeborough the specialist bike retailer operates solely online. Its bikes are designed by its in-house team and retail at up to 50% less than equivalent high street prices.

In 2020, Planet X’s 50 employees acquired the business from its founders and set up an Employee Owned Trust (EOT). The business has now moved its banking to Santander UK and is accessing a range of facilities to support its ambitious international growth plans.

Currently Planet X has predominately UK based customers, with around 73% of its turnover coming from UK based sales. It has ambitious plans to increase its international sales from its current levels of 22% of turnover from Europe and 5% from the rest of the world.

Santander UK is supporting the business with a £1.5m trade finance facility, alongside a range of additional support totalling £3.225m.

As an eCommerce retailer, Planet X has been well placed to serve customers during the pandemic. The Santander team will continue to work closely with Planet X as it increases its online sales capacity to help meet the heightened demand both in the UK and internationally. The £1.5m trade finance facility allows Planet X to drive international growth, providing the company with the confidence to manage supply chains knowing that they have full support of their chosen banking partner.

Trevor Parker, Planet X Director, said: “The Santander team is excellent, their understanding of our Employee Owned Trust busines model gives us great confidence and adds commercial value to our decision making. By listening and understanding our concerns, they were able to present practical solutions to overcome them. With this funding we can react to the changing market, both in terms of Brexit and Covid-19, and our supply chain is now extended.”

Andrew Russell, Relationship Director at Santander UK, added: “Planet X has a proven track record in the cycling world of delivering quality bikes and accessories at competitive prices and continues to be a great success story. We’re delighted to be chosen as their banking partner and look forward to working with them to realise their growth strategy and expand into new territories.”

Originally founded by keen triathlete Dave Loughran in the 1990's, the founder returned as CEO in 2016 and set the company on course for employee ownership (inspired by Sir Hugh Facey of Sheffield-based Gripple). Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) were introduced by the government in September 2014. The aim is to facilitate wider employee-ownership via an indirect holding to encourage employee engagement and participation in the upside of future success.

News: Santander close another Rotherham branch

By

Spain's Santander bank has closed its second branch in Rotherham town centre as part of an "on-going branch de-duplication programme" as customers increasingly use other methods to do their banking.

The UK bank network grew with the acquisition of Abbey National, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley and up until recently Santander had three branches in close proximity on Effingham Street and College Street, the key shopping streets in Rotherham town centre. It was set to make it four by taking over the RBS branch on the High Street but Santander decided to withdraw from its agreement to purchase the RBS England and Wales branches and accounts.

One Effingham Street branch closed with bookmaker Coral opening in the former Falstaff pub building in 2013.

Now the College Street branch has closed too, a few months after Natwest closed its Corporation Street branch citing that the number of people using the branch had dropped by 12% since 2011 as customers use alternative ways of banking such as by telephone, in Post Offices, by app and online.

Santander's CEO said in last year's annual report that the branch network (which numbered 13,927 in the world) will continue to be the main channel for high value relationships with customers. Javier Marin added: "At the same time, as an increasing percentage of our clients are operating via online and mobile telephone banking and the contact centre, we are strengthening our multi-channel distribution model so as to provide a more integral, complete and accessible service."

In the UK, 2014 has seen a "further consolidation of multi-branch locations" with Santander reporting in its latest financial results for the nine months to September 2014 that its branch numbers had decreased to 950 from 1,191 in the same period last year. The UK division enjoyed attributable profit of £326m for the period thanks to its mortgage lending, current accounts and commercial lending.

The quarterly management statement added: "We continued to invest in branch refurbishments and digital technology. This year we have delivered a number of improvements in all of our digital platforms including our online and mobile banking services as well as introducing more digital technology into our branches, a new public website, a new online bank interface, a new iOS App, improvements in alerts functionality, improved online sales capability and a rollout of digital ATMs."
