News: Welcome to Yorkshire placed into administration

By

Welcome to Yorkshire (WtY) has been placed into administration following "well-publicised legacy issues."

WtY is the Destination Marketing Organisation for Yorkshire and the official tourism agency.

Following its establishment in 2009, WtY received core funding from Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, as well as other income, including funding from local authorities across the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Legacy issues include the resignation of former chief executive Sir Gary Verity in March 2019 over concerns regarding expances and the way the organisation was funded. His replacement James Mason stepped down in October 2021. The board said that "Coupled with the impact of Covid and the task of securing sufficient funding from the public and private sectors to place Welcome to Yorkshire on a sound financial footing, have made the situation increasingly challenging."

Yorkshire council leaders recently decided not to commit to a multi-year funding package.

Yorkshire’s local and combined authorities also agreed to take time to further engage with businesses to develop an organisation that will meet the needs of both public and private sector clients and bring wider benefit to the region.

Peter Box CBE, Chair of Welcome to Yorkshire. said: "The [government-commissioned] de Bois review of Destination Management Organisations could have created the opportunity for WtY to be given the structure and long-term funding required to move on, grow and develop into the organisation we believe it should be on behalf of Yorkshire and its people.

"Sadly, the decision of the Yorkshire Leaders not to commit to a multi-year funding package, whilst understandable, removed that pathway and means that WtY cannot continue in its present form.

"It is my sincere hope that the public sector will recognise the value of a new regional Destination Management Organisation to build on the many achievements of WtY."

Cllr Stephen Houghton, who is Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “Every district, borough and county in Yorkshire benefits from tourism. The industry, and the communities that rely on it, deserve our support, in particular as we continue to recover from the effects of a global pandemic over the last two years.

"Welcome to Yorkshire has played a pivotal role over the last decade, enabling us to bring high profile sporting events and investment to the region, and showcasing our talent and diverse offer. But a lot has changed and, following consideration of the views of our public and private sector stakeholders on the current arrangements, we have unanimously agreed that a new approach is needed.

“We all agree that our visitor economy needs a champion, and we will now speak further to our stakeholders to ensure we have an organisation with a clear purpose, that works for all, and is sustainable for the future."

Rotherham Council paid annual membership costing £15,000 in each of the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. The board of the Sheffield City Region (as was) Mayoral Combined Authority agreed to invest in WtY in 2020 and the decision was made in private.

News: Grimm & Co wins a White Rose Award

By

Grimm & Co, the innovative literacy charity that brings a truly unique retail offering to Rotherham's High Street, has won a prestigious White Rose Award at the largest celebration of tourism in the UK.

Opening in a former pub in 2016, the Apothecary to the Magical sells wild schemes, evil plots, charms, curses and kitchenware. It was recently voted "No. 159 best shop for all things wicked" by Witch? magazine.

Above the shop, the Yorkshire charity runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for children in the local area, to unleash their imaginations and build confidence, self-respect and communication skills.

Run by tourism member organisation, Welcome to Yorkshire, the awards recognise the very best of this county's thriving tourism industry including pubs and restaurants, food and drink, hotels and caravan sites, visitor attractions, cultural events and customer service.

At the event in Harrogate this week, Grimm & Co was named as the Small Attraction of the Year.

Just being a finalist meant that the charity will be profiled by Welcome to Yorkshire.

Sir Gary Verity DL, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "Every single winner and finalist this evening deserves huge congratulations, they are all stars of Yorkshire and the UK’s tourism industry and should be incredibly proud of their achievements.

"Yorkshire has some of the best food and drink, accommodation, arts and attractions in the world thanks to the fantastic effort of our members and I hope they are as proud as we are of everything we achieve together to keep our county a number one visitor destination."

The charity has attracted thousands of young people for story-making sessions and 100% of teachers said their experience had been positive for them and for their class. It has also had visitors from around the world.

The unique workshops are free for children so the charity, which relies on volunteers, must continually work to raise funds. The apothecary shop supports the charity, with all proceeds going towards the running of the workshops.

News: Wentworth Woodhouse wows with land art

By

A colourful confetti trail at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham has won the Land Art Competition as part of the recent Tour de Yorkshire.

The Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) concluded the acquisition of the largest privately-owned house in Europe for £7m last year. The aim of the trust is to preserve the Grade I listed house and grounds on a long term sustainable basis and raise funds for repairs and other essential works.

With the high profile bike race passing through the borough in May, the artist group, Landmark Collective, spray painted colourful shapes onto the lawn in front of the house to represent its history.

Artist James Brunt and his team created a 140m x 150m confetti design on its front lawn which included symbols and imagery associated with the house's rich history. As well as being picked up on the live race coverage, the design was also gained national attention after being featured on BBC's The One Show. It is the second time a Brunt-designed piece has won the coveted Tour de Yorkshire Land Art Trophy after his "The Finest View" design on Sutton Bank also topped a public vote in 2016.

The inspiration for the land art came from a story that guests were given rose petals to leave a trail back to their bedrooms because the house is so big. Wentworth Woodhouse is one of the largest houses in Europe with more than 300 rooms.

The design features a giant Yorkshire rose; a checkerboard to represent the flooring in the marble hall of the house; and a wheel to represent the area's mining heritage.

Dominic Somers, representing Wentworth Woodhouse, said: "It feels incredible to have won this prize and it acknowledges all the hard work our team, the team at The Landmark Collective, the volunteers, and all the local schoolchildren put in to bring our artwork to life. It was an amazing opportunity to be part of the Tour de Yorkshire and it really put a spotlight on Rotherham and Wentworth Woodhouse. I'm delighted everything came together and we'll try to raise the bar again in the future."

Landmark Collective were commissioned by Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar, the three year project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Arts Council England (ACE), looking at the heritage, culture and community engagement.

12.5 million people watched the race around the world. Starting in Barnsley town centre for Stage 2 on May 4, riders raced through the picturesque village of Wentworth before a designated sprint at Swinton. The route continued past Kilnhurst and Hooton Roberts before taking in Conisbrough Castle. Passing Mexbrough, the riders headed North to the finish in Ilkely.

News: Bestall to represent Yorkshire at Chelsea Flower Show

By

Award-winning local gardening expert, Lee Bestall has been chosen by Welcome to Yorkshire and will showcase his talents, and the best the county has to offer, at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show this year.

A membership organisation, Welcome to Yorkshire is the official destination management agency for Yorkshire, boosting tourism in the county through marketing campaigns and involvement in high profile events such as the opening stages of the Tour de France.

Announcing plans to promote Yorkshire in 2015 at a recent industry event in Scarborough, Welcome to Yorkshire announced that its garden design for RHS Chelsea Flower Show has been accepted. Run by the Royal Horticultural Society charity, the annual Chelsea Flower Show is Britain's most prestigious flower show and is held in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital. It showcases nursery exhibits and model gardens and includes exhibits from foreign countries as well as from Britain.

Designed by Lee Bestall, Yorkshire's garden will feature a microbrewery theme and will highlight not only the great gardens in the county but also the impressive range of micro breweries when it goes on display in May.

Enterprising Lee, who grew up in Aston in Rotherham and studied at Sheffield Hallam University, was working in recruitment when he earned the chance to turn his love of gardening into a career with invaluable training from gardening expert, Diarmuid Gavin as part of a BBC series.

The local businesses, Inspired Garden Design and Bestall & Co, based at Renishaw, have gone from strength to strength with Lee receiving industry awards including a silver medal at Tatton Park Flower Show 2005, a bronze medal at Gardeners' World Live 2006 and Grand Designs Garden Designer of The Year Award 2012.

Lee described being selected by Welcome to Yorkshire as a "fantastic opportunity for us to represent Yorkshire at Chelsea."

Called "Brewer's Yard," 2015's garden is described as providing an illustration of the historical fusion between a recently refurbished old Yorkshire brewing shed and fundamentals of a modern micro-brewery. The garden interprets and aims to share the story of the elements of the micro-brewing process, then and now. A modern water feature inspired by brewing uses a combination of traditional materials and techniques with stylised design. Modern and antique brewing equipment accessories feature throughout the garden.

Sponsored by Wold Top Brewery, an award-winning micro brewery in Driffield, Brewer's Yard, will be the sixth time Welcome To Yorkshire has been on show at Chelsea.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "We've talked for several years about Yorkshire's potential as a county and as a destination – and now our collective ambitions and dreams are becoming a reality. There must be millions of people around the world who now know of Yorkshire, who didn't a couple of years ago – we're firmly front of mind. Our ground-breaking work builds on that and together we will cement Yorkshire's place on the world stage as a visitor destination."

Ann Roberts, owner of Throapham House, said: "Having opened on our wedding anniversary exactly seven years ago this made another lovely reason for us to celebrate the day.

"We're sure to be facing stiff competition again so we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope to make it third time lucky for South Yorkshire."

News: Welcome to Yorkshire funding agreed

By

Yorkshire Forward and Welcome to Yorkshire have jointly agreed to maintain Welcome to Yorkshire's funding at £10m for the next year.

The decision is good news for Yorkshire's tourism industry, which has already grown in value from £5.9bn to almost £7bn, since the launch of Welcome to Yorkshire on the back of the development agency's decision to invest £30m in the visitor economy from 2009 to 2012. 4000 new jobs have been created in the industry.

Yorkshire Forward recognised that tourism was a vital part of the Yorkshire economy and had huge potential to grow. It is already the third biggest sector.

The investment for 2011/12 means the continuation of high impact marketing campaigns and the development of festivals and events, as well as support for the many thousands of tourism businesses across the county to develop their product and skills. It gives Welcome to Yorkshire a sound springboard on which to develop a new funding model beyond 2012.

Thea Stein, chief executive of Yorkshire Forward, said: "Yorkshire Forward and Welcome to Yorkshire have always shared the same objective. This is to continue the excellent work the organisation has carried out in supporting and developing the Visitor Economy - a vital component of the region's economic success.

"I am delighted that we have been able to work together in a very challenging funding environment to reach a solution which will achieve this objective in the coming year."

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, added: "We are delighted to be entrusted with continuing the job of promoting Yorkshire and developing tourism. We have already seen the impact of investment in high profile marketing, both in terms of increased visitors to the county and in changing perceptions of Yorkshire as a place to visit, work or invest in.

"Visits to Yorkshire are up 22% since Welcome to Yorkshire was launched. For every £1 invested by Yorkshire Forward in the industry it has delivered £40 back into the Yorkshire economy."
