News: Event offers chance to inspire next generation of apprentices

By

Rotherham-based businesses are being invited to help inspire this year's school leavers and give them an opportunity to build their future career.

"Apprenticeships: Be Inspired" is a unique event which gives businesses who are thinking of recruiting apprentices over the summer months in 2016 a chance to meet school Y11s, Y12s and Y13s from across the Sheffield city region.

Organised by Skills Made Easy, a unique programme funded by the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the popular event saw more than 500 school leavers attend last year's event, with more than 200 apprenticeship vacancies on offer from local and national employers. This year, the event is being extended to all areas of the city region and with a number of schools from Rotherham supporting the event, local businesses are being invited to attend completely free of charge.

The event is taking place on the afternoon of March 2 at Ponds Forge and businesses thinking of recruiting an apprentice in 2016 can apply for a free exhibition stand at the event.

Over the past three years, Skills Made Easy has helped more than 1,300 young people into an apprenticeship, whilst helping employers to overcome skills shortages.

Skills Made Easy was formed as part of the City Deal that helps small and medium sized companies across the Sheffield city region to get the high quality training of the type they need, in the place they need it and at the time they need it. As well as support for recruiting apprentices, the scheme helps firms to access to a wide range of training programmes, usually delivered at no cost to the employer.

Laura Hayfield, programme manager at Skills Made Easy, said: "Apprenticeships: Be Inspired is a unique event. Young people do not get many opportunities to meet directly with employers who are specifically looking to recruit at the time they are leaving school, and this is a brilliant chance to find out more about their options and make vital connections.

"We are looking for employers who are thinking of expanding their workforce over the next twelve months to take part in the event. There's no cost to the business and no hidden catches: It's a chance for them to meet motivated and enthusiastic young people who are seriously considering the apprenticeship route."
