News: Olympic Training Club to be based in Rotherham

By

The Waterfront development at Manvers, Rotherham, is to be home to the British Canoeing Union's new Olympic Training Club. Developers TCN UK are to provide a 3,600 sq ft boathouse for the club, which will operate flat water canoeing to Olympic standard, sailing, dragon boating, model boating as well as coarse angling. TCN’s contribution is part of a £4 million commitment the company has made to developing the Waterfront’s leisure facilities, which also include a golf course, driving range and golf club house. Sport England is also providing £106,0000 worth of funding for the Canoe Club project. It is anticipated that the boathouse will be complete by the Autumn of this year but activities on the lake have already begun. Chris Hawkesworth, from the Canoe England division of the British Canoeing Union spoke of the massive potential of the base at Manvers and the facilities at the nearby Rother Valley Country Park. Stephen Holme, Director of TCN UK Northern office comments: “We are delighted at being able to realise this vision which will see the lake brought to life through the provision of this first class facility. It’s great news for local people of all ages who will be able to enjoy a range of fantastic watersports right on their doorstep. For the scheme as a whole it brings invaluable publicity, as well as creating the kind of buzz and vibrancy that will attract investors and homeowners to its business and residential elements.” The golf course on the site, which includes a 31 bay driving range, is due for completion in June.
