News: Chamber provides platform for Woodhead discussion
Local businesses, regional agencies and interested parties came together this month to discuss the potential opportunities for re-opening the Woodhead Rail Tunnel.
The breakfast meeting, hosted by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce at Brooklands Hotel, brought together a number of interested groups to hear a presentation from local MP Angela Smith (a member of the Commons Transport Select committee) who has developed a keen interest in the Woodhead Rail Tunnel issue over a number of years.
Angela said: "I am pleased Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce acknowledge how important regional transport is to the local economy and welcome the vital role the Chamber can play in helping to improve that infrastructure."
Such was the interest in the potential of the trans-Pennine scheme, the meeting attracted representatives from SYPTE, Network Rail, National Grid, Business Link Yorkshire, Don Valley Railway, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, other regional Chambers of Commerce and many local businesses.
Andrew Denniff, Policy & Communication Manager at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: "We were very pleased at the interest shown in this project and will be looking to lobby the appropriate agencies. The potential for this scheme and the impact it might have on the regional economy cannot be ignored."
