News: Brinsworth Academy of Engineering leads the way
The newly re-branded Brinsworth Academy of Engineering in Rotherham has sourced a record number of vacancies for apprentices in the last year.
The leading engineering and manufacturing training provider works with the region's top companies including Firth Rixson, AESSEAL and Newburgh Engineering. They generated 111 vacancies for young people in 2011 and has over 250 learners currently training to become skilled engineers.
The figures were announced at a recent visit by Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, to the Templeborough academy.
Brinsworth Academy is playing a key role in supporting the development of the Sheffield University Technical College (UTC). Set to be based in Sheffield city centre on Shoreham Street, the UTC is an academy for 14 - 19 year olds that will "bring together Advanced Engineering and Materials and Creative and Digital Industries in a community of learning."
Cllr. Dore said: "It is imperative that we train apprentices for jobs that are out there. There is no point in training the next generation for jobs which are either already oversubscribed or dwindling.
"That is why I was so impressed by what I saw at Brinsworth Academy of Engineering. They are successfully matching their trainees with jobs which are desperately undersubscribed. We need to be working with business and industry and training future generations for the jobs which are needed. With the right skills we can match people with the right jobs."
Paul Reeves, business development director at Brinsworth Academy of Engineering, added: "We pride ourselves on the relationships we have built with employers over the years to enable young people to gain valuable careers in engineering. We are delighted that the Leader has taken time out of her busy schedule to come and see firsthand the work that we are doing to develop new talent for employers across the City Region."
Brinsworth Academy of Engineering will be holding an open day for employers at their Templeborough base on February 9 2012 as part of National Apprenticeship Week.
