News: Union warning over Pegler's Yorkshire future

By

Unite, Britain's biggest union, has raised fears over the future of manufacturer, Pegler Yorkshire in the region.

The Dutch-owned firm is a leading manufacturer of advanced plumbing, heating and engineering products and has a commercial head office in Doncaster, and four manufacturing sites - Leeds, Doncaster, Budapest and Jiangmen, China.

In 2010 it opened a £7m state of the art warehouse and distribution centre employing 85 staff at Brookfields Park in Manvers, Rotherham.

Pegler Yorkshire recently announced 50 job cuts at its Leeds site and the union believes there is a real possibility that the site will close and the site's "Yorkshire Fittings" product will no longer be made in Yorkshire.

In July 2013 Aalbert Industries, the owner of Pegler Yorkshire transferred a French operation, Saint Denis Hotel, into the Pegler Yorkshire Group. Unite believes this was to enable the eventual transfer of production from the Leeds site to France.

Ian Tonks, national officer at Unite, said: "Despite being profitable and receiving millions of pounds worth of government investment, Unite fears Pegler Yorkshire may be planning to leave the UK. We do not believe there is a sound economic case for the job cuts and we are demanding that the company reverses this decision and guarantees the future of the site going forward.

"Unite will be giving workers at the site 100 per cent support. It is time for Yorkshire Pegler to sit down with the unions and come clean about its plans. This company is strategically important for UK manufacturing and Britain cannot afford to lose these valuable skills."

News: Strong activity but prime rental falls in Rotherham

By

The commercial property market of the industrial and distribution sector in Rotherham saw strong activity in 2009 but a fall in prime rental values, according to a recent report by national commercial property consultancy, Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH).

LSH's National Industrial and Distribution Report 2010 showed that South Yorkshire recorded an increase in take-up levels during 2009 and that market activity increased in Yorkshire & The Humber, with 8.1m sq ft of transactions, an increase of 7.0%

The report highlights that the well-located estates in Rotherham performed well throughout 2009, with the sub 50,000 sq ft units driving the market forward. Occupiers have been drawn to the primary locations and, in particular, motorway junctions, with similar headline rental figures to the previous year being achieved.

Despite strong activity and rents being paid, prime rental values in the sector fell by 13.6% in Rotherham in 2009.

The report also states that South Yorkshire has a significant oversupply of larger distribution units due to the scale of speculative development which has taken place in previous years. Conversely, in other areas of the UK there are acute shortages in prime industrial stock.

Michael Alderton, Head of LSH's Industrial and Logistics Division, said: "Our findings are certainly encouraging and we are starting to see real improvements in the industrial sector, however, there is still a huge oversupply of second-hand space in the market as inefficient businesses continue to suffer."

LSH worked on the largest pre-let to be completed in South Yorkshire in 2009 when Pegler agreed terms for a total of 102,000 sq ft of prime industrial space at Brookfield's Park in Manvers, Rotherham.

The £7m distribution facility for the leading manufacturer of fittings, taps and valves is nearing completion.

News: £2.8m fit out for Pegler in Rotherham

By

Pegler Yorkshire are investing £2.8m in their purpose built warehouse and distribution centre in Manvers.

Dynamic Systems will supply and install all the storage and handling equipment for the £2.8m fit out. This includes mezzanine floors, pallet racking and cantilever racking and all the tote bins for product storage, as well as a fully-automated mini-load system for order picking.

Following extensive design and planning work, installation is set to begin on site early next year.

Gillard, managing director of Dynamic Systems said: "Although this is a brand new distribution centre, a bespoke design always presents challenges as you're trying to meet a client's very particular needs.

"Pegler's products are mostly small in size and high in volume and we needed to reflect this in the design. We are confident the new system will run smoothly and achieve the high levels of efficiency that Pegler Yorkshire expects."

The £7m facility at Brookfield's park in Manvers will see Pegler Yorkshire Group consolidate its Barnsley and Doncaster-based warehouses, scheduled for early 2010.

News: Progress for Pegler in Rotherham

By

The first phase of a £7m warehouse development in Rotherham has finished as the structural steelwork for Pegler Yorkshire Group Limited's new distribution centre reaches completion.

Pegler Yorkshire Group, a leading manufacturer of fittings, taps and valves has confirmed its commitment to the region with the acquisition of the new state of the art warehousing in South Yorkshire, located at Brookfields Park in Manvers.

Property consultancy Knight Frank in Sheffield brokered the deal with the pre-letting of the 104,000 sq ft development for a distribution centre and warehouse facility that will see Pegler Yorkshire Group consolidate its Barnsley and Doncaster-based warehouses, scheduled for early 2010.

Established names such as Next Plc, Maplin Electronics and Garnett Dickinson have already taken space at the Brookfields site, which is being marketed by Knight Frank and Lambert Smith Hampton on behalf of St Paul's and Tritax.

Ian Howarth, financial director at Pegler Yorkshire Group Limited, said: "The completion of steelwork for the new Brookfields distribution and warehouse facility means that we can really see the Pegler Yorkshire Group's vision becoming a reality.

"The location for the warehouse is geographically excellent as well as offering the whole package – a perfect location and proximity to the transport network combined with a sound financial package, to provide a highly effective facility which will be a key element within the group's future business development.

"This is an important move for the business and will allow us to service all our customers from one facility with one delivery, and is in line with our strategic plans to become a fully integrated business."

Rebecca Schofield, associate at Knight Frank's Sheffield office, said: "The site is one of the most cost effective business parks in the country and offers a unique tax allowance for purchasers with significant incentives available for tenants. It provides companies with highly beneficial opportunities to locate offices, commercial enterprise or distribution centres in the Dearne Valley."
