News: Mayor calls in at Capita

By

The Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Shaun Wright was given the opportunity to visit one of the region's largest employers recently as he took a tour of Capita's Dearne Valley customer management contact centre in Rotherham.

Capita, the UK's leading outsourcing company, purchased Ventura, a customer contact specialist, for £65m last year. The company employs over 5,000 staff from the area and provides outsourced multi-channel contact centre services to a wide range of organisations across the UK.

Bruce MacLeod, managing director of Capita's customer management business, said: "We were delighted to welcome the Mayor to our Rotherham site this week and are keen to continue to support the good work of the Council in the regeneration of the region. The local community in which we work and do business is extremely important to us."

The Mayor added: "During my Mayoral year I have tried to visit as many businesses and companies as possible across the Borough, to thank them and their employees for their investment and hard work in making our town a success at a time when commerce and workers are operating in a very difficult climate.

"Saying thank-you and helping to shine a spotlight on some of the tremendous enterprises throughout Rotherham is a privilege and the very least I can do as Mayor.

"It was extremely interesting and very informative to see Capita's facility in Rotherham at close quarters and to hear how the Manvers site delivers a world class service. I am very proud that Rotherham people are playing such a big role in assisting the customers of some of the country's biggest household names. "

The news comes shortly after MGB won a major deal to supply hundreds of thousands of waste management products with Serco - one of the biggest operators of waste services in the country. It is currently supplying Serco with 100,000 bins which will be delivered to homes in Sandwell.

Conor Sugrue, general manager at MGB Plastics, said: "As a business, our aim is to work with local authorities and waste management companies across the UK to increase the recycling rates and we are really excited about the important role our products will play.

"We have started the delivery of these products and we aim to complete the roll-out over the new few weeks. All the bins we are supplying have been made at our factory in Rotherham and this contract further strengthens our standing as the leading manufacturer and distributor of wheelie bins in the UK."

The contract will see MGB Plastics manufacture and deliver around 120,000 new blue lidded 240L bins to Wiltshire Council alongside a roll-out of 70,000 240L green bins to Waltham Forest Council and 60,000 240L brown bins to Wigan Council.

In August MGB made a a six figure investment in new machinery that means that the manufacturing capacity of the 50,000 sq ft facility on Barbot Hall Industrial Estate is 1.5 million wheeled bins per annum.

Over the Summer, MGB supplied the Isle of Wight festival, the British Golf Open and Cheltenham Gold Cup with its bins being used by fans to keep the area clean and tidy.

News: Newburgh Engineering secures multi-million pound nuclear contract

By

Newburgh Engineering has been awarded a major new contract from Westinghouse Electric UK and Springfields Fuels Ltd for the supply of in-core reactor fuel components for use at existing UK nuclear power stations.

Newburgh, which has it's head office and manufacturing facility in Rotherham and a site in Derbyshire, secured the 10-year multi-million pound contract, after successfully completing a rigorous tendering process for Springfields Fuels Ltd, which assessed its quality control, health & safety and production systems to meet the stringent requirements of the nuclear fuel industry.

As a supplier of high precision components to the nuclear industry for almost 60 years, Newburgh Engineering has the expertise and dedicated manufacturing capabilities to fulfill the needs of this prestigious contract. As nuclear is set to become a much more prominent energy source to meet this country's future power needs, this contract provides a bright future for Newburgh's 100+ workforce.

Vincent Middleton, Managing Director at Newburgh Engineering, said: "This is fantastic news for our team, who have been working hard for over 12 months to secure this contract.

"It is testament to the skills and expertise of our staff and the systems we have in place here that we have been selected from strong UK and international competition to work with Springfields Fuels Ltd.

"We are looking forward to building on our long term partnership with them as we embark on this exciting contract."

Springfields Fuels Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric Company and Toshiba Nuclear Power Division, is based in Preston and manufactures fuel assemblies for EDF-Energy's fleet of Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors and produces thousands of tons of uranium hexafluoride and uranium powder for export each year. Around 15 per cent of all the electricity generated in the UK comes from power stations using nuclear fuel manufactured at Springfields' facility.

This contract win highlights Westinghouse's confidence in UK manufacturing and builds on their existing commitment to the region as a major sponsor and member of the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) in Rotherham.

Vincent Middleton added: "We will be working closely with the NAMRC in South Yorkshire to enhance this region's reputation for high precision engineering for the nuclear industry."

Bob McKenzie, Product Engineering manager at Springfields Fuels Ltd, said: "We are delighted to maintain our partnership with Newburgh Engineering who have supplied us with quality components for many years.

"We look forward to working with the team of people involved in making our products so that the current high standards of excellence continue to be enhanced throughout the life of the new contract."

News: The drinks are on Beatson Clark

By

Rotherham glass manufacturer Beatson Clark has been selected by leading drinks producer Intercontinental Brands Ltd as it launches additional and exciting products to its iconic St Helier range.

Intercontinental Brands Ltd (ICB) successfully launched its distinctive St Helier Pear Cider drink in 2007 utilising 500ml and 1 litre beer bottles which were designed and manufactured by Beatson Clark. The amber glass containers were designed during a joint venture and benefitted from different closure systems.

ICB is now launching two new varieties in the 500ml capacity – a cherry flavoured pear cider extending the popular fruit flavoured cider range and a pre-mixed lager shandy, aimed at adults who require drinks at the lower end of the abv spectrum. Also new to the market by ICB is Tesco's pre-mixed cocktails in three flavours; Cococabana and Pineapple, Jeeves and Lemonade, and Savanna and Lemonade. This product will utilise the 1 litre version of the bottle and will be presented for sale fully sleeved.

Mike Carthy, Operations Director at ICB said: "The increase in demand for unusual drinks does not seem to be diminishing, and, as a premier drinks manufacturer our packaging and branding is of high importance. Beatson Clark has once again delivered in terms of product innovation, production quality and delivery, ensuring their continued support of our core business requirements."

The Greasborough Road firm also helped Halewood International test the market for its new Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer.

Crabbies, which was launched at the end of last year, was propelled to iconic status as a desirable alcoholic drink, with sales exceeding all expectations. However thanks to its flexibility in production, Beatson Clark was able to respond and ensure a constant supply.

"The service we have received from Beatson Clark over the last year has been excellent," commented Ian Duffy, Purchasing Director Halewood International. "They were able to supply us with a quality standard 500ml amber ale bottle to test the market for our new Crabbies brand, and reacted quickly and efficiently when demand increased, proving they are a supplier who you can rely on and one who really can react to changing market."

Following on from this success, when retailers wanted a smaller bottle to market in a multi pack, Beatson Clark was also able to step in with its standard 330ml beer bottle.

Halewood International is now launching a new adult soft drink in the same Beatson Clark 500ml amber ale bottle. "Iron Press" is targeted primarily at men who require a soft drink but in a traditional masculine package.

News: Martek wins contract from Canadian Navy

By

Innovative Rotherham company, Martek Marine has signed a breakthrough contract with the Canadian Navy.

The deal will see Martek supply 12 MM2000 marine gas detection systems, with Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) capability, to the Canadian Navy's fleet of patrol frigates based in Victoria, British Columbia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The systems are designed to provide an early warning of any refrigerant leaking into the atmosphere and to detect the presence of flammable gas.

This is the first contract that the Manvers firm, one of the leading manufacturers of marine safety and environmental monitoring systems, has secured with the Canadian Navy.

Steve Coulson, Business Development Director, Martek Marine, said: "This is an important order for us as it demonstrates the adaptability of the MM2000 system to detect different gases, and its suitability for use on different types of vessels operating in varied, and sometimes extreme environments.

"The system has been tested for work in ultra-low temperature environments similar to those found in northern Canada during winter, and has been certified to operate without any problems in temperatures down to -55oC."

The contract was awarded by Canada's Department of National Defence, as a result of Martek's ability to satisfy a number of demanding technical and commercial criteria. This included long term stability, ease of maintenance, mean time between failure (MTBF) performance, and the costs of the systems and their installation.

Martek staff supported by certified engineers will carry out the commissioning of the MM2000 hardware onboard the 12 Canadian Navy vessels over the coming year. In addition, Martek will be supplying a full spare parts and technical support package for the equipment.

The contract will see MGB Plastics manufacture and deliver around 25,000 240L brown bins to Hertsmere Borough Council alongside a roll-out of 30,000 240L grey bins to Stevenage Borough Council.

It is the first time the company has worked with both councils to provide its wheeled bins and services. The first of the bins have already started to arrive at homes in the area.

Conor Sugrue, General Manager at MGB Plastics, said: "This is the first time we have supplied both Stevenage and Hertsmere councils and are delighted with how the partnership has worked.

"We will supply both authorities gradually and expect to complete the contract over the next month or so. News: NAMTEC contract for Wharncliffe

By

Barnsley-based IT specialists Wharncliffe Business Systems has won a contract to work with the country's National Metals Technology Centre in Rotherham to upgrade their IT system.

The National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC) realised they needed to upgrade their IT systems and contacted three separate companies.

Mike Strobin, Chief Financial Officer at NAMTEC said: "Wharncliffe were chosen as our preferred supplier because of their geographical location and also because they supplied realistic pricing in their proposal.

As part of their sales and implementation process Wharncliffe met with the Namtec team to learn more about the business, their IT requirements and suitability for the system.

News: Inditherm secures largest ever NHS order

By

Following a difficult year's trading, Rotherham firm, Inditherm have announced that they have secured their largest ever single order from an NHS hospital.

The project covers all of the hospital's operating theatres and Inditherm will supply over 30 complete patient warming systems that use their energy efficient polymer technology.

Implementation will begin in April and will allow all patients undergoing surgery in the hospital to be warmed automatically as soon as they lie on the operating table. It is estimated that the forward-thinking NHS Trust will also realise annual cost savings of around £200,000 and reduce environmental impact at the same time.

The Inditherm system helps hospitals to meet the UK's NICE guidelines on hypothermia during surgery, where traditional patient warming systems such as disposable blankets and forced warm air blowers are putting a significant extra burden on budgets. In comparison, the Inditherm system ensures that every surgical patient can be warmed, at the same running cost as a light-bulb.

In this deal, the very low power usage is set to lower the hospital's annual electricity consumption by over 25,000 kWh and the hospital should also see an immediate and substantial reduction in the amount of clinical waste created, estimated at well over a tonne per year.

Inditherm Chief Executive, Nick Bettles, said: "This order comes at the end of an exhaustive evaluation and procurement exercise. Inditherm is the only manufacturer of specialist patient warming systems in the UK, and whilst the clinical considerations are always the driving factor behind any decision to change, it is good to find a British technology that delivers financial and environmental savings at the same time.

"Sometimes customers think the benefits our product can offer are too good to be true, but we have over 50 NHS hospitals using the system now who can confirm that there isn't a catch. At a time of severe budget constraints we hope that many other NHS Trusts will also take up the opportunity to substantially reduce costs and at the same time measurably improve patient care."

At the recent Community Partnerships Awards, the award for Suppliers Delivering Sustainability, recognised the contribution of Inditherm systems to improving patient care, affordability and reducing environmental impact.
